Yeah, I totally forgot about not being able to open the links in a new window with the Flash tabs. Indeed, that would suck to be honest, since I myself open links in a new window >70% of the time. Even apart from that, Flash is just not natural.

So, my final verdict on Flash will be: (N) ...Maybe unless someone does a script or something that allows link in the flash part to be open-able in new windows.

Looking better and better. Don't forget not to put too much fancies on Neowin frontpage or else Neowin could lose its professional feeling on delivering tech news. We need simple and yet advanced design.

"Neowin, where unprofessional journalism looks better..."

I think that a major facelift like this would be great for Neowin.

Hey Long, what do you think of this? Mind you, I'm not a graphics expert, but I thought it would be cool to put the whole news article in it's own little box, and not just the title of the article. The colors aren't all filled in correctly because I just used Paint :p But you get the idea (Y)

Also, I was thinking, for the gamer's news, maybe we could fit an Xbox, a PS2, and a Gamecube up there? Or would that be too much for one button?

Just some updates. Just a note to everyone. The "Favourite" tab you see is an idea I had in mind. In your control panel, or whever the admins decide to put it, you can select which "feeds" you want, and maybe even offsite feeds too, then they will get sorted by time.

Instead of favorites, a word that is spelled differently in different parts of the world, I'd suggest using Bookmarks. That way everyone would be comfortable using the site.

It's not political correctness. It's... ummm international compatibility. :D

I can imagine huge arguements just about that.. I mean it was invented as favourites.. and being english ill alays spell it that way.

Bookmarks sounds good.. or would it be like Custom

Okay, I'm getting started on the Flash demo for you guys. I know a lot of you are against using flash, but you might like it when you see it.

Did you miss this? http://timdorr.com/images/neowin/neowin.swf

I'm actually going to see about replicating the effect in Javascript. Shouldn't be all that hard, and would make things work with what you all want to do :)

Am i the only one who noticed the pwn parts? :p

Looking good Long, i cant find anything to critisize but i've got 2 questions:

1) Will this look good in different resolutions (800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024, etc?) or will it only look best in 800x600?

2) Will it be cross-browser compatible?

I Dont suppose thats up to long, as thats just an image at the mo, i think that will be down to whoever does the coding

hmm, i'd just like to suggest that we ask Rokey for 'original' neowin icons :p

i've been using his smooth metal icons since he released them, and i must say that i'm still in love with them.

although i'm sure many other icon artists could create perfectly good icons too.

that's just my $0.02 ;)

Ok, if the general consensus with the members here was NOT to have flash nor tabs, why are they still encorporated?

Second, not to create a stir, but why is this what Long says is final? It seems his opinion on anything is what stands and not the opinion of hte members, which is obviously not hte way to go.

If everyone agreed that Long's current logo layout doesn't fit, and Long decided my idea didn't work, why has he not come up with one that does work, or even say if its in the works, i get hte impression its been totally ignored.

shouldn't this be more of a group project, so everyone is happy, and everyone can get some say/credit, i understand there is pride in doing it all yourself, but dont be selfish.

because this is his work and no one elses.

Who even said any of this was going to be the new design, maybe our designers have something different?

And on top of that, it is HIS design in the end, only he can decide what he wants to put it, until its an official layout and then WE (staff) can decide. No one has any say in it for now except for him, unless he wants to take your advice.

What concensus? I see a few people bitching about flash and a few people saying it's great. All I did was mock up something in flash. I'll probably redo that as a javascript, just to appease everyone and make sure some things possible (like opening the links in new tabs with a middle click).

Wow, you sound bitter and a half. I suppose if this was your design from the start you wouldn't be complaining as much. What he says goes because it's his design. It's not the official design, it's a mock up by a member. Why should the rest of the board have any say in how it gets designed unless he wants it to? He can ignore any member he choses.

Neowin didn't sponsor this, so it's just a member throwing out a design they made. If this were the official new design, what you're saying would make perfect sense. But it's not, so he can make it pink and striped for all I care! :p

@Everyone: Yes I was hoping the design to be scalable to all resolutions and look good on all resolutions. I will work with the coder (whoever) on that.

@Chadwick: Flash, as popular as it is, is a good alternative to HTML or DHTML in something that incorporates a "tab effect". Yes it could be debated that you could do with an Iframe, which was my orignal idea even, but that seems a bit "low-tech" for a high-tech site don't you think? If you argue Flash is not supported everywhere, but then you have about ~60% sites out there with Flash on their page without an HTML alternative. I am sure the "lite-skin" alternative to the design will not incorporate Flash, but then again, thats not my decision.

Chadwick, I don't see, and surely hope that what I say is final. Like with the tab colours for example, I have taken in feedback, twice, and changed it back and forth and then we got it right, I hope. Also, if I'm not definete on what I say, the development is not going to move forward very quickly is it. Say you have a government that discusses each and every change for a week. Then nothing would get done.

I did not say my current "logo" was perfect. I did try your approach of logo on the design, and I did not upload it (I don't upload every change because I'd upload something every minute), and the outcome of your approach left a lot of gap at the bottom of the logo which was very hard to utlise, and thats why I did not use it. And surely you can't say I ignore suggestions, the suggestion for the bottom footer was great, and we modified it a bit and it seems to have worked out great.

Hopefully everything above can justify my actions. Again, I express my gratitute for everyone who has already submitted feedback and suggestions, I am deeply sorry if it seemed that I have ignored some, because I cannot respond to every single post. I hope everyone can contribute ideas or suggestions and make this design suit the majority of users at Neowin.

    • Anthropic pulls Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after US export control order by Pradeep Viswanathan In April this year, Anthropic launched the Claude Mythos Preview frontier model with state-of-the-art cyber and coding capabilities for a select set of companies around the world. After preparing appropriate guardrails, early this week, Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, its most capable AI models. Claude Fable 5 is for general users and comes with strict safeguards, while Mythos 5 is designed with fewer safeguards for cybersecurity and biology use cases. Today, Anthropic abruptly suspended access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models for all customers after receiving an export control directive from the US government. The company received the directive from the government today at 5:21 p.m. ET, and the received letter did not provide any details regarding the national security concern. Anthropic understands that the government became aware of a method to bypass, or “jailbreak,” Fable 5, which might be the reason behind the directive. The order was issued under national security authorities and requires the company to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether they are inside or outside the United States. The restriction also applies to foreign national employees working at Anthropic. As a result, the company has disabled both models for all customers to ensure compliance. Access to previous Anthropic models like Opus and Sonnet is not affected by this government order. The company highlighted that it had developed strong safeguards to reduce the possibility that Fable is misused for tasks related to cybersecurity. In fact, many developers are complaining that the safeguards are going overboard. Additionally, the company worked with the US government, the UK AISI, multiple private third-party organizations, and internal teams to red-team Fable’s safeguards for thousands of hours. Finally, Anthropic noted that no testers have yet been able to find a universal jailbreak on Fable 5. As expected, Anthropic disagrees that a narrow potential jailbreak should lead to the recall of a commercial model used by hundreds of millions of people. It warned that applying this standard across the AI industry could effectively halt new frontier model deployments. Anthropic concluded by mentioning that it is working to restore access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 as soon as possible and plans to share more details within the next 24 hours.
