How good is your antivirus?

Question

Since most would like to argue bout what is the best antivirus. I decided to open this thread solely for testing your preferred antivirus. This is a compilation of a group of hackers.

*************WARNING*************

THIS IS NOT FOR THE SCAREDY CATS. THERE ARE ALL VALID VIRUSES. DO NOT OPEN THEM OR EXTRACT THEM TO ANY LOCATION. SAFEST METHOD TO TEST YOUR ANTIVIRUS IS TO SCAN THE COMPRESSED FILE. I WILL NOT TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITIES FOR YOUR ACTION.

Here's a link to download an archive file containing the viruses. READ THE WARNING BELOW BEFORE CLICKING HERE

TEST THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK

If you dare to take this challenge, do post the screenshots of the antivirus in action and please do not use any Photoshoping skills to manipulate the results.

Try to post at least the following information for others to evaluate

1) Program/scan engine version (Exm NAV 2004, AVG 6 Paid Version, SAV 9.0.0.338 and etc)

2) Any settings you changed

3) Screenshots (Optional as proof)

EDIT: Contrary to the filename which tells you 455 viruses, no it is not. Actual total is 593. If your antivirus detected them all, well done.

I don't understand why my results with Norton 2004 would have been so much lower than others with Norton. I have the lastest dat files, b/c I ran liveupdate right before I did the test. My results really bother me. Anyone have any ideas?

Maybe the difference would be some settings you changed, or having an older scan engine. Maybe you should look into it.

Second possibility would be some guys lied bout the results... :laugh:

@Neotech

Read carefully my first post. Actual total is 594

@digitalslacker

Maybe you should update your SAV to version 9. DId significantly better. I am using it. detected 589.

@nuka_t

duh.. it's a windows virus. Hmm i didn't explicitly state that... :blush:

@alpoinacan

Read carefully, i stated... i checked with my friend with UPDATED virus definition. still same results. I dont mind you correcting me. Try it out.. post me the screenshots to prove me wrong.

Np, I just wanted to point out to you that your defs were a little old. I did d/l and try it out with the latest defs and I got the same results as you did. In other words, I wanted you to try with the latest, but did it myself. I'm now wondering what it missed, and why KAV found 604. I scanned with TDS and Pest as well. Same Results. Wanted to see if they were indeed all viruses and not a few trojans or such.

Point taken. But if those are trojans and etc. The AV should get all of them.

Most/All AntiVirus are good at detecting Virus's... But actually getting rid is a different matter.

True.. that's why you should also see what action the AV takes after scanning all those viruses.

SAV as i posted earlier, automatically deleted the whole archive without any screen displayed (eliminate newbies choosing the wrong decisions). Someone posted bout AVG found 588 viruses but none cleaned. I'm not trying to troll but that doesn't sound right does it?

How can yours pick up more.. I have the latest program and the latest defs

this is weird

yes.. i also wondering that obscure_.

sim1 just did that test. Same results with Staticfish.

Please do test by scanning the file instead of extracting it out. Although it shouldn't make any difference but it may affect the actions the AV takes. Therefore, i stated in the first post to directly scanned it to standardized the results.

Same thing I got, isn't it the best virus protection ever?  :D

high fives!!!

Sadly to say, i tried Pccilin. It detected and removed every single one of them, all 594. Guess so far there isn't any Pccilin users that posted a result to confirm what i tested earlier.

Maybe Cnet's review and giving the highest ratings to Pccilin does have some sort of justifications.

EDIT: I purposely withheld certain information to try to make this thread as truthful as possible :whistle: . I tried it with some friends of mine, unfortunately the results are not accurate as i guess most are hardcore fans of AV and didn't want to lose.

@kitteny_berk

I realize that not everyone has the knowledge to avoid viruses in the first place.

I even realize that *I'm not perfect*. I do have anti-virus software installed on my computer, but I've never needed to clean a virus from my computer in the 6 years I've been online.

I do recommend some sort of anti-virus software for anyone. I work at an ISP and people call with all sorts of questions. We have email server-side virus filtering at work, but I still convince people to have anti-virus software on their computer for everything else.

For most of our customers, I just recommend some sort of free antivirus software. I don't like the Avast interface. It's not all that intuitive. I usually recommend AVG and send them instructions on which settings to change for maximum coverage. (Update more often than every 14 days, use heueristics, use the Outlook Express 5 plugin, etc.)

So before you go nominating me for the Darwin Awards, try to see my post for what it is. People who have the knowledge should use it. People who don't, should try to attain it. In all cases, have a backup plan.

    • I totally disagree. Very little good comes out of governments all around the world manipulating everything they can and usually the people are not the benefactors. What you say about being restricted and expensive sounds almost like the arguments against firearms and why banning them will protect people as if making something illegal somehow will prevent the criminals from having and using them. AI being far less mainstream could simply mean the average person will not benefit, but "big brother" and the corporations will benefit, which is almost for sure NOT a good thing.

    • "connect with audiences" is the most obvious corporate speak you can think of. I only bought Need for Speed from EA because it was the only racing game with cops in existence and I dig that. Now that they killed off NFS franchise, I have nothing to spend money on. EA is officially dead for me, just like Ubisoft which I've been boycotting for some 20 years now...
