(became too stiff or loose, you know). it is really hard to damage a 3g i doubt a speck of dust is going to destroy the click-wheel... and does a keyboard ever get stiffer or looser after age? none of mine have... in the end, it's personal preference. i like the clicking feel. if you like the non-mechanical-ness of the 3g, then a get a 3g. Adster
is there anyone who have actually tried the actual 4g and is ready to comment? Yes! I own a 40gig 4G iPod. I formerly owned a 20gig 3G iPod. I did have alittle trouble getting used to the click wheel, but after using it for a while I realized that having the buttons on the top actually wasted some time while browsing the iPod. I havent decided weather or not I like one or the other yes, but I love the scrolling of the 4G much better then the 3G. The material they used for the circle on the 4G is much more smoother and finger friendly then the 3G. After a while the 3G started to become rough. Even after cleaning it would still become rough. althought I've had my 4G for less then a week this is something I'm noticing. Yes, I just said "finger friendly". daimon
i really did not mean that but thanks for caring about me anyway, now i really like this place :) . the thing is that the 12h battery life is really essential for me because i tend to travel a lot (i am a boarder in my school) and also (i did not see it mentioned anywhere) now I would be able to charge my ipod with my usb (on the 3g, you had to have a mac for this feature) on my laptop. Redestium
...i like the click-wheel, but as i haven't seen the 4g ipods yet, my first impression is that the brushed metal wheel is ugly. It's plastic. Adster
You can charge the 4G using both USB and FireWire. Also, on the 3G's you can charge the iPod via FireWire weather or not you had a mac or PC. You just couldn't charge it with USB. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/192751-the-new-20gb-ipod/page/7/#findComment-2559331 Share on other sites
daimon
i edited the post, i dont wanna misinform anybody. my lappy does not have a firewire port anyway. mav phoenix, how does the wheel look and feel? do you think that it ruins the looks? Many have said it looks more like a sticker since it's all flat. Personally I think it looks tacky as hell and a downgrade from the 3G, especially with the menial feature set, 3.5G more like it. Once again, just my views though, not everyone will agree. the_snitch
when apple upgraded g3ibooks to g4ibooks, the plastic became opaque white rather than transparent plastic painted white underneath. Is the new ipod white painted or opaque plastic? Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/192751-the-new-20gb-ipod/page/7/#findComment-2559448 Share on other sites

Portablecow
Who says its supposed to look like brushed metal? Why can't it just be gray plastic!! Sort of like the two tone of the iBook. daimon
I got to try the new iPod in real, finally. The clickwheel does not really look ugly, you get used to it after some time. And I think that after some time it gives the iPod a unique look, like it is hiding the real good stuff inside a modest box (do u guys also think that i need psychological help?). but still the 3G iPod looks more futuristic with its touch sensitive buttons, I think. I also tried in dark to see if it is comfortable to use it and the answer is yes. I mean you can easily figure out the cardinal points (also, considering that many people has the backlight off as default in their ipods, you gotta figure out where the menu button is in the 3Gs). To be honest, I am not really disappointed as many people are. It is still an iPod which looks better than any other player on the market. Also the extended battery life and the ability to charge through USB 2.0 is really cool. But right now I am checking out the iAudio M3 which really looks cool too. So it's not loud enough to distract ppl when I'm in a place like the library or a lecture hall? alveq
So it's not loud enough to distract ppl when I'm in a place like the library or a lecture hall? I'd like to know that to. Is it like a click on the mouse button? If it is, that might just be what makes me buy a 3G, even with 4 h less battery... daimon
It is not. I mean it is quite negligible, it just feels like you are clicking the button. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/192751-the-new-20gb-ipod/page/7/#findComment-584246109 Share on other sites
Redestium
Yeah, I just got my chance to use the 4G today in one of the Apple stores. I was surprised how slick it was (even more than the 3G). I can see why people make the sticker reference when seeing it since it is pretty flat. I still prefer the 3G interface over it though since the clicking just makes it feel old after using an all touch interface. meamog
I just bought a 20Gb yesterday in the Apple Store in St. Louis. They said they'd been shipped 200, and there were about 9 left yesterday... they're selling like hotcakes. The wheel's click is really about the same as the click on a good mouse, not really loud at all, and it FEELS SOLID, not cheap. I think the new grey wheel looks nice myself, two-tone white and grey looks really minimal and quite svelte. It's really smooth even though it's matte, so it's quite nice to use. Oh yeah, and a nice light blue backlight. :) Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/192751-the-new-20gb-ipod/page/7/#findComment-584247812 Share on other sites

wet_paper_bag
i'm afraid i didnt read all 12 pages of this thread to see if this was already asked but still.. i have a 3G ipod (and i have to say i dont really like the grey wheel on the new ones) and im not looking to buy a new one, but, i'd like to update firmware to 4G firmware (i've been wanting that remove song from on the go playlist feature since i first got my ipod last year). Not surprisingly it looks like apple is doing the same as before and keeping 3G firmware for 3G and 4G firmware for 4G but im sure there will be a way to get the 4G firmware running on a 3G.. anyone have any ideas on that? someone willing to rip the 4G firmware off their shiny new ipod?
