[DEFINITIVE] Half-Life 2 Thread

It probably has something to do with the value being overwritten. There used to be a bug where valve.rc and some other source-specific files would be overrided by their GCF copies in the CSS beta. They fixed it and now I guess it needs (I used needs subjectively of course :p) 'un-fixing'.

I see. Well I think its good the warez version has many bugs :D means more people will go "oh this is stupid" and just buy it :)

After hopefully (not) making a new account

I understand what everyone is on about, its not the greatest idea needing to connect to the net, but honestly, in this day an age, if you can afford a $130 game you can afford a $20 net connection. If not, you sure as hell cant afford the cost for the hardware to run it. I cant say I blame valve, all the pirates out there, someone had to do something eventually, I probably would have done the same thing.

Just my 2cents.

Cool!  It never occurred to me to try catching one of the buggers!!  Must try that myself!

heh never watched any of the hl2 videos? i think one'em showed the manhacks and you can grab'em with the grav gun. it's fun and kinda scary at the same time.

Seems like Varsity assumes allot before even beaking the evidence down ;)

Is not baseless since the warez version have a problem with the AI behavior because a bad patched file.

It seems to me that you used the God mode since you are not supposed to be alive to destroy the turrets, thats why that part is hard, because you need to do it in a clean way.

You do realize that it impossible to create piracy protection that works. Connect to the internet to play was not a great idea. There are versions of the game going around that don't even need connection to Steam. What I'm trying to say is that stoping piracy is a futile effort.

It's not futile, they are just going about it wrong... the 20,000 serial code trap was amazing ( ) But of course the version that does not require steam is floating about (with AI problems) which is a cause for concern.

I thought that it may have been cheaper to download the game, rather than buying it retail... I noticed on the Steam site, that the HL2 bronze package is $49, which roughly equates to about ?30ish, but you can get the retail dvd for around ?26....

Surley its better to have the hard copy.. thought I might be saving a few quid downloading it!!!...:cry:y:

    • One reason it might be running hotter is dust build up within the cooling or perhaps the paste has dried out. You could always try repasting your old GPU and cleaning the cooler. Your experience in Linux will be much better with an AMD GPU; the performance in gaming is much closer to Windows than nVidia would be. I personally think on Windows, AMD drivers are junk.
    • I reviewed it back in March, but I didn't have a 5070 at the time https://www.neowin.net/reviews/amd-rx-9070-review-vs-rtx-5070-4070-and-rx-9070-xt-7800-xt--just-good-enough/ When I reviewed the 9070 I did have a 5070 to compare it against, so the scores are there for the 9070 XT. it outperforms the 5070 in raster, and is barely neck and neck in Ray Tracing. So it's better than a 5070 in everything but Ray Tracing where it is neck and neck, or just under. To be honest, the uplift from 3080 when it was new to the 9070 XT is not as great a step up. If you can find a used 4080 Super for around the same money, you would probably be better off, but if you only want to buy new then the 16GB 9070 XT is the best value for money in its category.
    • I really hope the author's health is ok. Squirreling away a official backup of this software. Looks like the internet archive already cached a copy as well - https://web.archive.org/web/20...ldbit-soft.fi/software.html
    • AMD is supported out of the box in linux because of their open source driver. Nvidia does not. All my systems are amd and all of them work nicely on linux arch without doing anything.
    • Never had a problem with TPM and started using that many years ago in Win10. Through several motherboards and OS versions, it just does what it does without complaint. My games library doesn't even know it's there. Secure boot does a lot more than support anti-cheat, as it came along long before anti-cheat software. I've used it religiously since before I started using TPM, and I always liked it for being able to nullify virus contagions that try their best to come in underneath the firmware during boot, so that the OS doesn't see them, etc. That is its purpose, imo. I'll never understand why people who elect to use another OS feel compelled to run down Windows... I guess they need to do that to feel secure about their choices? I run Windows because it supports all the software (including games) natively that I want to buy, and I've never had to run down another OS to make me feel better about it. (Although it's certainly possible to do that, of course...) Win10 is on a ventilator atm, and Win11 is very close to being free, and I finally got to stop running StartAllBack as I moved to the Experimental/Dev channel and my 26300.8553 build supports the moveable taskbar and it's running fine at the top of the screen! Finally, my last major dislike of Win11 is being rectified! So, I'm not at all surprised to see Win11's share of the Steam survey hitting 70%.
