[DEFINITIVE] Half-Life 2 Thread

I can pretty much guarantee you that it isn't the monitor.  Looks like a video card problem to me, what are your sys specs?

Could it be ATI's VPU Recover? I've heard that sometimes it cause problems.

Well, this is not about multiplayer, but I was playing HL2 and got to the prison level. Then my son started playing and when I got back to play, I realized all my saved games were gone.

So my question is, is there any way that 2 people can play with different save games?

BTW, I accidentally asked this in another thread and I wanted to start my own thread. The only answer I got before was to do "proper" saves instead of autosaves or quicksaves. I had made some saves, but they got overwritten also.

I remember this being a pain on HL1, cos at the time i was living home and me, my sister and father were playing....could never remember which one was which lol....

Only thing i can sugest is backing up your save game from \Steam\SteamApps\<username>\Half-Life 2\HL2\SAVE\ or at least, after u finish playing, make ur save game read-only or somat :/

For sure can't be your monitor because if it is a physical monitor problem, then you will not be able to take a screen shot with that error. I'm going to say File corruption, and maybe re-installing your Graphic card driver could help....

I tried deleting my HL2 files, and that Source file corruption thingy.

Still bad.

I guess I'll try to re-install my 9800xt drivers next.

Use the 4.12 betas....ive found them to be pretty solid :)

Also, ive always disabled VPU Recoverer and Fast Writes....never had issues with em disabled :)

Yeah the game is truly amazing. Gameplay is so dynamic and original. And the ending was done just right. It's too bad we're gonna have to wait another six years for HL3. But when it is out, I hope all the mysteries and secrets will finally be revealed. I can't wonder forver.

I read this and cracked up so I thought I'd share.

Hundreds of buyers of "Half-Life 2," the hotly anticipated shooting game released last week, are reporting in developer Valve Software's user forums that they feel queasy and often develop a bad headache after playing the game for as little as an hour.

    • Along with that and very unfortunate for Linux, the AI boom/tariffs/global supply chain instability really destroyed any chances of it getting a decent chunk of market share. By all accounts, if a Steam Deck was still available for $399 (with tons of alternatives releasing at $500-$800 - instead of $1500+ now) and the Steam Machine was out there for $499, I think a lot of people WOULD have been willing to try SteamOS and switch away from Windows. But yeah, with the crazy jacked up prices now, people have to make safe bets with their money.
    • Neowin hasn't been covering the Ladybird browser but it has been posted about on a lot of tech and Linux/open source sites. I have been following the effort myself for almost a year now. Cloudflare and Proton are among their sponsors. You can read the why here--> https://ladybird.org/#about
    • That's really the user's problem, not the developers. It's not like the Windows 10 EOL was a surprise. Once a product goes out of support, you have to understand YOU are owning the risk of running it - the rest of the world will move on, maybe you'll be OK, maybe you'll be OK for a while, maybe you'll have an issue.... But you can't expect devs to write or certify software for dead operating systems.
    • Not mentioned in this blog post is that Linux has now dropped for 2 months in a row. At a hight of 5.33% in March, then 4.52% in April and now 3.99% in May. I suspect the end of Windows 10 got a bunch of people to try Linux, fueled by all the Microsoft hate, and rabid social media push of that....and now they are going back to Windows 11 because of the normal Linux issues. The vast majority of PC gamers want to use their computers to game and not trouble shoot why a game wont work, or half work.
