[Definitive] Sony PSP Thread

Recommended Posts

hey guys i have a couple of questions

1. how convenient is it to use the psp as just an mp3 player, talk about size, ease to scroll songs, search for songs, how to switch between songs (without looking at the screen), how to carry etc

2. if i had an episode of lets say, apprentice, hdtv, xvid, 350mb, and convert it to the psp (with acceptable audio and video quality) how big would the output file be.

thanks for replies.

edit: is there shuffle, repeat functions?

haha...not convenient at all. first off youve got BULK, second, youve got a cumbersome two-handed interface. its a pain...certainly not a feature they should be advertising...kinda a 'gimmick' really...

you could theoretically get a half hour episode of tv down to 30 megs...ive gotten south park and family guy down that low with acceptable quality

Has anyone seen this yet?  I found the link at a PSP forum.  The Korean PSPs gets to go online and if you look at the pics in the link (somewhere in the middle), I think they're playing StarCraft!  When are WE (USA) going to get this?!

Link  56k warning.

That's the Starcraft TV they have in korea.

Not happy with it?

I've still not decided anyway. I've gone to like every store in Chicago and can't find ANYONE who has a unit on display so you can 'try before you buy'. They only seem to do that with the DS. It would be nice to decide in a month or so though, as I have a nice long trip coming up.

or you can come on over to the uk and ill sell you mine

A display model of the PSP would look terrible though, unless the sales staff came by every now and again to wipe the smudges off. A PSP is really only worth it right now if there is a game you really must have (for me it was WO Pure, but only get it if you're a fan of the original). Waiting on MVP 2005, but if it keeps getting pushed back, I may just end up getting MLB.

K, got my psp today! Yay.

But the plug is not the same as what we use in UK, so am i ok using a powercord from like my ps2 into the adapter? The plug given says 124V on it, with 6A.

Would this just fry it or what?

*Edit* On the adapter it says input 100-240V's, well Uk runs at 240V so thats ok right?

Just don't wanna fcuk it up first day.

Lol.

Thanks.

Well, I got my PSP last night at Circuity City... I had found a store in the area (Best Buy) that had units I could actually play with, but none in stock. Circuit City had like 4 in stock and they have a no questions asked return/exchange policy. :D Got Untold Legends as well.... Fun game, but I think BG:Dark Alliance on my old PS2 was better. Not bad for a first release though!

Not -1- dead pixel either. And the screen sure is beautiful on it. :)

Are all units in the US the PSP1001 models?

My psp is also PSP1001. No dead pixels either :D

I saw that on like page 19 here right after I posted. lol. I guess that is just the current NA model #... Glad you have no dead pixels, I was so scared of having them after all the reports.

Now to wait for 1GB memory sticks to be available and not a ripoff (you could find them for close to $90 2 months ago... :( )

Only problem is i need to buy a bigger mem stick, the 32mb one isn't going to last long.

P.s i bought from Lik-Sang, they delivered it within 2 days of payment, which is amazing.

I did get stung for ?40 import tax however. Gutted. But worth it.

    • Linux 7.1 arrives with an NTFS overhaul and major hardware performance boosts by Paul Hill The founder of the Linux kernel has just announced the availability of Linux 7.1. This is a stable version of the kernel that will now be tested by various Linux distributions before it is shipped to users through update managers. Some users, like those on Debian, for example, might not get it for a long time, if at all, while Fedora users can expect it in the near future. With Linux 7.1 out on time, the merge window for Linux 7.2 is now open, giving contributors the opportunity to send in major new features that have been waiting for the last two months. Torvalds warned that he is currently travelling and will be in another timezone, so timing for the merge window may be irregular due to timezone differences and limited internet access. Torvalds said that he has already fetched early pull requests to allow him to do some offline work, but the travel could still cause disruption. Right now, he is not planning to extend the release, but did consider it. He said he might later regret not extending, though. In terms of this last week of development for Linux 7.1, Torvalds said there were no major or alarming changes. This week consisted mostly of smaller driver updates to GPU, networking, and sound, networking fixes, trace tooling fixes, and misc minor fixes. The shortlog this week lists fixes for driver bugs, memory leaks, I/O and USB fixes, networking and RDMA fixes, DRM/graphics fixes, and tooling and verification improvements. Specific fixes include USB series heap-overflow and buffer overflow fixes, and multiple use-after-free, memory-leak, and refcount corrections across subsystems such as i2c, zram, gpio, and net. There are fixes for graphics drivers, including amdgpu, i915, and virtio, as well as hypervisor and virtualization tweaks affecting mshv, vmbus, and hyperv. According to Phoronix, anyone running Linux 7.1 should look out for the new NTFS driver, Intel FRED for improved performance on Panther Lake and future CPUs, faster graphics with Intel Arc Battlemage, and improvements for older AMD Radeon GPUs. If you are running Linux on your computer and everything is fine, then you don’t need to worry about updating to Linux 7.1 as a priority; just wait for it to be pushed to you. If you have tried Linux on hardware but it didn’t work properly, trying again with a distro that uses Linux 7.1 could cause Linux to work on your machine, thanks to the new hardware support.
    • you can also do this with this tool: PowerSettingsExplorer made by mbk1969 at 3dguru forum.. I found it by accident researching on modern standby and annoying quirks of it in 2022
