How much did the upgrade to 512MB ram cost you?? Apple severely overcharges for RAM, and if you can install it yourself, I'd recommend looking elsewhere for your RAM.

Upgrade to 512 was ?50. I know they overcharge and stuff but I wouldn't be confident in fiddling about with the insides so to be honest I don't mind paying an extra ?50 for 512.

Once I become more confident with Macs, both software and hardware sides then I think I'll definately look to buy some more RAM elsewhere and then fit it myself.

i wont be getting one. if i could use it as my MCE05 box i would. but theres no way to install windows on that. it would go great on the living room next to the tv. but i was a PC user wanting to get into the mac. i bought a mac which runs jaguar and im really not impressed. everytime i get on the machine i think... whats there to do... basicallynothing but surf the web and IM. thats one my main gripes about the mac. sorry i just wanted to post this since i see alot of people sayin its going to be their first mac.

all i can say is i was dissapointed.

p.s. the pearpc made me want to buy a mac. it runs panther and tiger but after buying the mac i wasnt impressed. back to windows i go.

damnit, i tried to make this not so threadcrappy but it turned out it is anyway. sorry folks

ps.ps. i think they should make a 20 gb version. if i was ableto use it as an MCE box i would just install the os on there and use my 250gigger server to serve me all the movies, music, and pics i wanted. ... say ... $399 mayue? :p wishfull thinking.

that's because you'd never used a mac before and were unfamiliar with the software available for it and the plethora of features available in the os itself. this is just a guess, but I'm assuming you didn't do the following:

- boot up the mac

- ask "what do I do on my pc"

- make a list

- find mac software that does that stuff

unless, of course everything you do on your pc is impossible to do on a mac, which i doubt.

that's because you'd never used a mac before and were unfamiliar ...

that is what i did... i made a mental list at least, and i didnt find anything that was worth buying. or dling to say at least.

also i didnt say its impossible. i just find myself not being very productive on a mac than i am on a windows. its the same with linux though. so dont take offense I was just telling my story.

btw. where did you get your sig? tis funny...

well you can always find a cheap monitor at your local goodwill or other second hand store( trust me, ive found some gems) or at a swap meet or other spots, Keyboards too. I also think this is probably a good cheap way for someone to get into learning OSX. :) if i had the extra cash id definately buy one. But only with 512mb Im just not comfortable with only 256, because i know ill be doing some kind of multitasking (after i get familiar with the OSX environment. :)

p.s disregard my first post in this thread. I was thinking about this and have come to the conclusion that this is a cool idea. :)

I have always been interested in a MAC, and i guess this is how Apple are gonna try and steal seom windows customers, which i see working well as it's extremely well designed. There is no case as well built in the pc range which is a shame.

Just one question if i was to get a bigger hdd, 160GB or something how do you go about reloading osX? Does the mac mini come with a restore / OS disc which can be bunged into to reload the OS. I did read that a backup of the OS is supplied but i didn't know if somehow they are locked to the 40GB drive.

Like i said i am interested in the MAC's and as voted i will get one. I will be using it as a dedicated photo lab (i take alot of digital photo's)

If i was crucial i would be advertising Mac Mini RAM upgrades on their front page

I wouldn't let entry level people use this computer, (i manage 16 computers, all pc's) because my users would simply go out and buy something built for a pc then complain to me that whatever they purchased won't work with the imac. This is for mac users in general and people comfortable with apple. PC users that use windows will not be amazed by it, because of thier knowlege of video cards and processors(noting that the imac isn't as fast as most emachines, gateways and hp's of current). I would purchase it for myself, but I don't need it. As soon as apple makes thier pc's compatible with ibm clones, then there would be no conflicts with hardware and software and my users could have either. I don't dislike this Imac, and would like to own it and distribute it to my users just because of the very size of the thing. That is a definite plus when shopping around for a pc.

Jeers to apple for not sqeezing in a extra slot for ram I am definitely going to get one but I have no idea what I am going to select for ram or how I will upgrade

I would like over 512 Megs but a 1 gig stick cost too much I wish I could just get the default 256 and order a 512 stick from crucial and add it in

when did it say by law that it is for just "mac users"

Not all pc users think the same as far as how they would like there system to perform, and what needs they have as far as a PC again i give you a

Already sold my pc (se sig) - just have to place the order.. :fun: (Y)

I never play games anymore - just surf the net, fiddle with my pictures (got a digi-cam this x-mas) etc nothing serious - think this little rascal is going to fit me quite nicely. :D

Yep, that's the exact same thing that I will use the Mini Mac for. Surf the net/email, use iTunes along with my iPod Mini and use my Digital Camera in conjunction with iPhoto. That's pretty much it.

I've wanted to make the switch for quite a while, but it's always been too expensive but now it is a viable option.

Same as you both :) I never play games on my PC now as I have an xbox and PS2, so all I do is browse the net, email, msn, my illustration work and music (iTunes and iPod) so its going to be just what I need.

So selling my PC and iBook to fund to get a Mini Mac and 20" Apple Display. (See Neobay for these 2 items).

    • I like Tidal, but it still does not control devices from the mobile/app and still no surround support. And yeah re: above comment I still get a lot of network errors and I am on a 4/4 Gbit Fiber connection.
    • Aren`t "security features" and "AI model that can see your screen" a tad diametric!
    • Samsung, Amazon extend 990 PRO 2TB NVMe SSD deal beyond Prime Day 2026 by Sayan Sen Recently, we had Amazon's Prime Day 2026 sales wherein there were several great deals including on SSDs. One of those discounted components was the Samsung 990 PRO SSD as the 2TB variant of it was selling for $370, a very good price after a long time. Although that deal was supposed to expire today, Amazon has now extended that sale further (purchase link under the specs table down below). The 990 PRO is a PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD and still one of the fastest drives available today for under $400. Speaking of fast, sequential reads and writes are rated at 7450 MB/s and 6900 MB/s, respectively. The random throughputs for reads and writes are 1400K IOPS and 1550K IOPS, respectively. The 990 PRO is based on Samsung's 7th Gen V-NAND flash, and it too is TLC. It packs 2 gigs of LPDDR4 DRAM cache, which helps the random performance. The endurance rating for this is 1200 TBW (terabytes written), which should be sufficient for most users. The Samsung 990 PRO is compatible with the PlayStation 5, but if you are going to use the 990 PRO on a PC, check out the Samsung Magician app that lets you track your drive's health, update its firmware, customize various settings, and more. The technical specs of the Samsung 990 PRO 2TB are given in the table below: Specification Value Form Factor M.2 2280 Interface PCIe Gen 4.0 x4, NVMe 2.0 NAND Flash Samsung V-NAND TLC Controller Samsung In-house Controller Cache Memory Samsung 2GB Low Power DDR4 SDRAM Sequential Read Speed Up to 7,450 MB/s Sequential Write Speed Up to 6,900 MB/s Random Read (4KB, QD32) Up to 1,400,000 IOPS Random Write (4KB, QD32) Up to 1,550,000 IOPS Random Read (4KB, QD1) Up to 22,000 IOPS Random Write (4KB, QD1) Up to 80,000 IOPS Operating Temperature 0°C to 70°C Reliability (MTBF) 1.5 Million Hours Endurance 1,200 TBW (Total Bytes Written) Get it at the link below: Samsung 990 PRO SSD 2TB NVMe SSD (MZ-V9P2T0B/AM): $369.99 (Sold and Shipped by Amazon US) Good to know This Amazon deal is U.S. specific, and not available in other regions unless specified.
