Difficult question. The ?official? top speed is 176 MPH. Several motoring magazines of the time attempted to verify this, but there aren?t any runways long enough in the UK to do it on. And no-one in there right minds would publish an article claiming to have done 170+ MPH on public roads. Rumor has it that top speed is governed by the rev. limiter in 5th gear, and this would give a top speed of about 187 MPH.

well i wouldn't be suprised if it could, some dude on the web has one with a superchip giving it 550WHP and it could do 202mph, so removing a rev limiter could make it go even faster.

why not? the limiter on my escort is 108mph but if i disable it ive managed to hit 140 :)

Athlonix: Ah, but a superchip is not standard. Sure, you could probably make it do 250 if you spent enough money on mods, but you could do that for a lot of cars
