Actually it states right on the software page... look for yourself.

I see no mention of AIM Beta 6.0. Until its called AIM 6.0, its not.

I'm going to watch myself since you are a mod, but come on, we have so many sources saying it is AIM 6.0 and you and some other guy are just saying its not with no proff. If you can give me an offical source I'll believe you, but really you are just being ignorant.

I'm guessing the reason its not 1 yet because its in the very early beta (even though they call it a beta its more like an alpha) stage. It's version 0.1.12 of the Triton beta. It's such a milestone being rebuilt from the ground up. And who says they can't use those numbers? You can change the version number to 6 when the product goes final just like they will drop the Triton name I'm guessing. They are just codenumbers and codenames. Oviously the programming scene isn't your strong suit but hey, it's not mine either.

The reason its probably not on AIM.com is because its such an early beta. Beta's on AIM.com are ususally very stable as because many people go there to try them out.

But you think what ever your little heart desires.

Oh yeah, here are my sources again:

it has some errors

Yeah, thats probably because it is beta

And to everyone else; why do you really care if it is AIM 6.0 or not?

It is still AIM after all, just a rewrite from the ground up, hence the new version number starting with a 0.

If you can give me an offical source I'll believe you, but really you are just being ignorant.

I did give an official source... the beta page from aol.

I'll check again, but I see nothing mentioning AIM 6.

Edit: Yeah, nothing... no AIM 6. For all we know this could be a new communicator.

When you install it, it clearly says "AIM Beta"

It has AIM in it... which stands for AOL Instant Messenger...

Its a major re-write

the version right now is 5.9

An offical AIM programmer stated it was

Usually on major milestones they go to the next number, hense 6.0

I'm sure you can get the picture on where I'm going with this..

Yeah, well I posted the news... you're ignorant

Why don't you change my title back

and then you create your own topic with your own little thoughts

and then people can decide.

But you won't, and when its posted, you'll look like a big ass

Cheers

How bout no... and you might want to tone it down, because now your close to breaking some rules.

Assume all you want, but until I see the 6.0... its not 6.0.

Heres a way to close the argument: Call the 1-800 number and simply ask them if its AOL Communicator or AIM.  As far as I can tell, its AIM, and im going to do as I suggest.  Now, does anyone have the actual setup.exe file thats downloaded from the AOL Downloader?

585834116[/snapback]

It's somewhere, because I had to download the setup.exe because the AOL Downloader screwed up on me. Just look hard, try some AIM Plugin forums.

Ignorant??? How the **** is he ignorant?

He's editing the title to keep it accurate.

It says Triton beta 0.1.12, not AIM 6.

Its not called AIM 6, it might be, but not right now. It's clearly called AIM Triton beta 0.1.12 on the beta page.

Installer might say AIM beta, but whats to be expected when its called Aim TRITON beta.

 DUH

You sir, are the one who is ignorant, assuming its 6.0 when it clearly has a different name.

Apparently he has never worked for a company that issues alphas and betas. I have worked for 2. This Triton beta does not have a number or a name, it is only referred to as Trition beta 0.1.12. It may or may not be 6, but we will not know until the beta is progressed further or it is released.

Are there notifications when buddies sign on and off like in AIM 5.5 and 5.9? Do they look any different, if so, can anyone running the Triton client post a screen shot.

Also I saw someone metion new sounds, are there finally new buddy list/IM sounds?

Thanks. :)

I am pretty sure (the better :p ) that the notifications will change, because now, they have no effects like fading in or out, and they arent exactly pretty...

There is a notification for when 'new' IMs arrive, but right now they appear all the time for each IM you get.

Also, notifications aren't on by default, you have to enable them in settings. here is how one looks...

Of course, they appear in the bottom right corner...

Responses to AIM 6 Comments

A number of people wrote in with comments, I appreciate the feedback. I'll try to address some of them here briefly...

* Features - I can't stress enough that this is AN EARLY BETA (some of us would have called it alpha). Lots of things are missing. They'll appear in future betas.

* Memory footprint. Yes, it's big. Way too big for a final product. But it's not a final product, it's an early beta, we haven't done any tuning. The footprint will come down.

* Number of processes. We currently run different components as different processes to improve stability for this beta. This will change in future releases (and will help memory footprint as well).

* IE as renderer - we do very strict client-side filtering and run the incoming text through an XHTML converter to ensure a valid DOM, so I think we will be considerably more robust than AIM 5.9's creaky ATE control. In the event that we made a mistake, we have the ability to do server-side filtering as well.

* AIM for Linux... can't say too much now, but most of the Triton code is very portable, and may show up in another form in the future.
