There is a guy where I work that switched from Windows to Linux using Linspire. Put it on his and his wife's computer. He says it just worked great for him out of the box (and the same CD can be legally used on all his computers). He is starting to open the command line and explore & learn a bit, too.

Linspire fills a niche for Windows users who want to leave Windows, but don't want to be overwhelmed with a lot of new things to learn all at once.

Not a distro for me, but it suits some people well.

Long time Mandrake user here, but I'm now running kubuntu. I used Mandrake for years but some recent developments led me on a search for a new distro. Some changes at Mandrake and the desire to run more recent software made me change.

I don't have the stock KDE installed anyway, so I voted for ubuntu.

I am a long time Linux user (8+ years). But I found Linspire to be the easiest distro to move off of Windows to. I know, there's a lot of things you can't do, and that's why I have RH and SuSE distro's running on other systems at home. But for the target market that Linspire is trying to reach (average Windows users) it is a great distro. And because I recognize what Linspire is trying to do, I support them.

Look, if you have average Windows user Joe Schmoe asking about Linux, would you recommend Gentoo? I think not (unless you want to own all the support calls afterwards). Linspire lets the Windows user have familiarity of the Windows desktop without the need to understand the nuts and bolts of Linux.

I wish folks would just look at what Linspire is trying to do. People complain that Linspire is charging for free software. They are charging for the service of the CNR. You don't have to use the CNR folks. Klik and apt-get works just fine. But to be honest, I think the $50/year for Linspire on all my desktops at home, which includes major upgrades is a great deal. At that rate, it would cost $10 per system, per year for me.

Bottom line: As long as it's some form of Linux, who cares?

I tried Fedora Core 2, Mandrake 10 and SuSE9.1, but they all had too many problems for a Linux n00b like me to solve. :( I will probably give Linux another try soon, maybe over summer - if I was to try again then I would probably try Ubuntu, as I have been hearing a lot of good stuff about it.

I disrespect linspire because they try to sell firefox and openoffice for $30 both opensource program all there doing is putting it on a cd and making a package

also they try to flame windows. I'm not a big fan of windows but I think the way linspire trys to put down microsoft is bs I saw one of the flash movie

and with you bottom line I do care cause some people can really edit linux so much it becuase editedlinux

Like you, I don't like their constant whining about Microsoft.

However, I do not fault them for charging for Open Source. Open Source means "libre", not "gratis".

Plus, they contribute (money and programming) a lot to other Open Source projects (like KDE and so forth).

Face it, Open Source means business, not just hobbyists.

Hello All,

I'm still a rather new linux user..having used ms windows all of my life, I just thought I'd check out linux. I started with linspire live cd, it seemed to work ok, but I didn't like the browser that came built-in with it. I wish it would have came with firefox like I'm used to. And I would rather tend to agree with some others here..as far as having to 'pay' for 'free' software through the cnr warehouse. I also tried the distro. damn small linux..never could get it to work properly. Also, puppy linux, it worked pretty well. Then tried knoppix live cd..it worked pretty well also. I'm still waiting for my 'free' copy of the ubuntu cd's..from all that I've read about that distro., it sounds like it's very popular.

You can download changed freetype rpm's fc3 and fc4 (changed bytecode) use google.

      I like the show more options. The only problem with it is that it's not always in a consistent spot in the menu. If the copy/paste/cut, happens to show on top, then more option is the last in the menu. But if copy/paste/cut happens to show on the bottom, then more options is before the copy/paste/cut. But I do like the more options because it hides the stuff that I rarely use. But I would like to choose what it is or isn't hiding. That would make it better.

      Rescind the stupid "Show more options" in context menus and just give us the full menu instead of adding more steps to get to what we want. The "simpler by default" makes me think they'll go in the opposite direction. Every context menu should have a configure button so you can pick and choose what options should be shown, I know you can do that with some registry fu but that shouldn't be required.

      Microsoft is making Windows 11's context menus faster, simpler, and configurable by Taras Buria Five years ago, Windows 11 introduced redesigned context menus, offering users a simpler, more modern design. However, customers quickly discovered that the new menus leave a lot to be desired. Many are unhappy with performance (they are really slow), while others dislike the double-layed design, where many options are hidden behind the "Show more options" button. In addition, over the years, menus became cluttered and overloaded. While Microsoft has already fixed plenty of pain points across Windows 11, context menus remain mostly unchanged. Fortunately, Microsoft is finally listening. Marcus Ash, Design and Research Lead for Windows at Microsoft, responded to a tweet on X, confirming that the company is working on fixing Windows 11's context menus. Reworked context menus are supposed to be faster, simpler by default, and "configurable to what you use most." What the latter means is unknown, just like whether Microsoft plans to keep the classic menu alongside the modern one, but according to Marcus, the wait should finally be over soon, as he promised to "share our approach soon." Improved context menus will most likely appear first in Windows 11 preview builds in the Experimental Channel. While we wait for Microsoft to release them, you can try fixing context menus on your PC with a simple tool called Windows 11 Context Menu Manager. It lets you disable entries you do not need, not only cleaning up context menus, but also making them significantly faster. Microsoft has already improved Windows 11's Start menu and taskbar, so hopefully it will address user criticism of the context menu as well. Stay tuned for new Windows 11 preview builds, which usually arrive every Friday.
