[Definitive] Nintendo Wii Thread

It's a prototype... neither the XBox 360 or Playstation 3 prototype worked, either -- all the games were running off of PCs or Macs. That was unprofessional journalism at its finest with that report.

585947281

It's a prototype of the design but probably not a prototype of the machine itself. None of the consoles at E3 actually had any hardware inside the boxes.

Besides, Engagdet beat IGN with that hands-on rev report and did a better job at it too.

They were simply showing off the look of the console. Jeez, I dunno why people actually expected a working version considering all the technology is still in development. If it was working it would probably just have gamecube parts inside the shell. *sigh* Just like the 2X G4's powering the xbox360 games... and that console is TWICE as close to launch.

Hey kids, this is what gets you when you actually research factual news instead of rumors.

An interview with Reuters yesterday, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed some new details regarding Revolution, the company's next-generation console.

He said, "We plan to give details on when we will launch it, what the price will be, what the controller will look like and how games can be played on it by the end of the year." So, it appears we won't have to wait until E3 2006, which is what some people were dreading would happen.

One thing that many people were happy to hear about in Nintendo's pre-E3 conference is that with the Revolution, gamers will be able to download past Nintendo games from the NES, SNES, and N64 systems. Speaking about this, Iwata said that in addition to 1st party games obviously being available, Nintendo is talking to 3rd party publishers about making their games available as well, which is good to hear. Nintendo hasn't decided on pricing yet, but Iwata said that Nintendo could charge per game, sell pre-paid cards in stores, or give games away as promotions.

Speaking about the newly unveiled Game Boy Micro, Iwata said that he hopes people will "see its value." He also mentioned that it's more costly to produce than the GBA SP. Hopefully this doesn't mean that it will be more expensive.

Maybe it was a good thing they brought an empty box. Nintendo doesn't want to have a prototype "accidently go missing" and later you hear that Sony has made major revisions to their console. After revealing the N64, later down the road, it was like hey what do you know, the PS dual shock controller has rumble features and the Saturn has an analog stick along with the PS controller.

All consoles boxes were empty, if they had all the hardware inside why would they launch it next year?

E3 2005: "IT'S NOT ABOUT SPECS" - NINTENDO'S MARKO HEIN

European exec deflects allegations that Revolution won't punch with the same processing power as Xbox 360 and PS3

5:13 The Nintendo Revolution may not be as powerful as Sony's PS3 and Xbox 360 when it launches next year, but it will provide a far better experience and open up gaming to a whole new audience.

That's according to Marko Hein, Nintendo's European head of product analysis and online. While Revolution was unveiled yesterday, the lack of technical specifications on offer was notable.

"It's not about specs," claimed Hein when CVG.com spoke with him today. "It's like in a car - having 400 bhp sounds very nice, you can drive 300 kph, but if the drive isn't enjoyable then what's the point?"

For Hein and Nintendo - once again - it's all about the gamer. "For us the emphasis is on the games and the actual gaming experience, and not on the hardware. Microsoft may well show off a lot of specifications, but that doesn't mean it will have the best choice of games."

Hein then took a swipe at the PS3 trailers shown at Sony's press event on Monday - the subject of much 'were they real/were they rendered' debate. "Let's look at the games, and not rendered demos shown in a conference. I want to see a playable game."

Needless to say, Hein wouldn't be budged on the Revolution's revolution. Referring to Tuesday's rather sparse Revolution details Hein said, "we are very conservative about revealing too many details too early, because when you are doing something revolutionary then your competitors copy."

But the Revolution's controller is certainly a large part of the puzzle: "I think we have deliberately not shown the controller or talked about the controller because it is probably one part of the revolution."

Hein also talked about the Game Boy Micro, addressing the disappointment felt by many that the handheld is not a true GBA 2. "We always try to do the best with the existing hardware before we move onto the next hardware," he said. "The question is how do you reach different groups of people. I think nowadays you have to something a little cooler and more lifestyle, and that's where the GameBoy Micro fits."

So when will GBA 2 show itself? "It's too early to say, but it's well known that we are always working on hardware to keep up with technology and new ideas."

And when it comes, will it be part of the Revolution's revolution? "I have no information on that. But it's a good question..."

Check back soon for more of Hein's views on Game Boy Micro, Revolution, Nintendo going online, DS, and GameCube.

As I SPECULATED, Spaceworld is back.

May 19, 2005 - Nintendo may have decided to downplay its next-generation console, codenamed Revolution, at this year's Electronics Entertainment Expo, but fans may not have to wait another year for more information on the platform. Asked whether Nintendo would premiere more Revolution news before E3 2006, the company's vice president of corporate affairs, Perrin Kaplan, said yes.

Nintendo has in past years held Space World shows in Japan to show off its hardware and software lineups. Space World events have traditionally taken place in August, just three months after E3.

"We don't know yet," Kaplan said when asked if Nintendo would hold another Space World event. "It eats people alive to do these shows. It's a huge amount of work. So we really have to think it through seriously."

Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto reiterated Kaplan's comments in a recent interview, saying that more Revolution information would be forthcoming sooner rather than later, and that a new Space World was under consideration.

Because it could have been a working prototype. Concept cars do get engines, you know.

585947624

If it was a working prototype they would have run demos and playable games on it, instead of showing it on computers/videos

None of preview games or videos were running on next-gen consoles. Last time I checked, cars and consoles are NOT the same.

It would be nice if people would post relevant information on the topic instead of wasting pages on irrelevant slander.

Things that do not help thread:

A) OMG I just found a webpage that someguy saying that Nintendo revolution is an R2D2 unit.

B) Hey, i dont like you cause you proved me wrong, you should get banned!

C) Well i think Nintendo is doomed cause they make kiddy games and revolution seems like vaporware.

What you should be doing

A) Look at this news posted at X, it says Y B & Z

B) Relevant and constructive questions like : Is Nintendo going on the right path? How much Revolution will cost?

C) Comment on recent news.

Here's my take on all this hype.

All I saw before that was tons of PS3 vs XBOX360, no one even considered Nintendo's offering (well some of us did, but our voices were very small). All this speculation single handidly put Nintendo on the map for this round. And although you may feel let down because you built up alot of anticipation for no reason, in the end it was a good thing. The simple fact that people who thought "let's see nintendo's last console then I don't care" are now actually saying "I wanna see what it can do before I choose a console" which is the way it should be.

585947178

sorry to quote ya but, too bad the only nintendo hype i saw was on this thread. no where else was this rumor (ngame) or anything else talked or speculated about. i know it feels like a 62 page thread might be big and spetacular but look at all the posts are all pretty much from the same 4-5 people. nintendo had alot to accomplish to get back in the mainstream. and i hope they do.

The rumor was on every video game site forum. The ones I kept checking out were IGN, Gamespot, Nintendo, GameSpy, and Penny Arcade's forums. And some even had more pages of comments then this forum.

And if you didn't think there was any Revolution hype besides this thread, then you need to use the search button more: Link. I see 16 posts on the first page alone and 15 were made by different people so it is not like 1 or 2 people are posting Revolution threads over and over again.

Also going through all the "which console are you picking threads" and the "which one is the nicest" Before all this hype, Nintendo wasn't even metioned or considered. Now alot of people are saying. Well I really want to see Nintendo's offering first. Which is what I based my argument on. Not for a moment did I base it on this thread. Also going to other forums that I visit, alot of pc gamers are talking about it too and such. It is getting attention.

EDIT:

And just to clear things up it wasn't so much of a - everyone is insane because they're speculating Nintendo is gonna do something crazy!!! It was more of a - people are talking about this Nintendo thing being good, and that console looks pretty sleak too, well, I'll wait and see.

Nintendo has another game convention in japan, called Spaceworld. I think that is when they will reveal everything.

585936152

hate to break it to you but Spaceworld has been basically cancelled since 2001.  Nintendo has pretty much ended that show. if they show anything else they MIGHT show it at TGS.

585936261

Yeah, that's what I meant, I always get those two mixed up.

I didn't say it was, I said it could have been. Stop flipping out for a second and read the text next time. It's not unreasonable for people to think that the case may actually have contained electronics.

"... and that a new Space World was under consideration."

They're considering it.

585947961

They did say there will be more news on revolution in the coming months, by the end of the year, and before next E3.

Usually Spaceworld is on August. It would be wise for nintendo to make a big show of the unveiling of more revolution information rather than just make press releases at their website. Hype it up. Obviously the downside is, it will cost nintendo quite a sum to make a convention just to reveal a few details.

Either way, Nintendo's strategy seems to be to deliver the goods after the E3 storm has passed. All you see right now is PS3 and XBOX 360. Nintendo doesn't want to be overshadowed by the big boys. It's a good strategy, but I just hope they don't wait too long. Marketing is as important than the product itself these days.

I still gives sony a year to copy whatever Nintendo has... and it's not like they have to make a show of it. All that has to happen is if they leak out a couple pictures to ign or something and everybody on the internet will have seen the new controllers inside a day.

The only thing with using "revolution" as the final name is that it doesn't roll off you tongue very well.

"ecks-box three-sixty" works

"pee ess three" works

"re-vo-lue-sion" is just too many syllables especially if you put "nin-ten-do" infront of it I could see something like Nintendo "vee-arr"(VR) if it's indeed virtual reality... obviously they'd keep a name like this hidden to prevent accurate peripheral speculation. But who knows, we should hopefully soon find out.

585928110

not so old post, but heres an important reply:

syllables:

mi-cro-soft x-box three-six-ty (8)

so-ny play-sta-tion three (6)

nin-ten-do re-vo-lu-tion (7)

x-box three-six-ty (5)

play-sta-tion three (4)

re-vo-lu-tion (4)

theres the full syllable breakdown, with ms having the most in both rounds, and nintendo falling behind sony by one or tying sony :). sorry for turning neowin into a temporary grammar school, bud :( but it had to be done.

Folks, it doesn't even matter anymore. The rumors and speculation were all false. Get over it. It might even be better this way. Nintendo still hasn't given away too much, yet we know to expect something big from the Nintendo Revolution. Plus, the Nintendo DS was great at E3 2005.

    • So how did you solve the problem? Disabling Secure Boot isn’t a solution.
    • Another devilish issue surrounding these certificates is what can happen with old, unsuspecting PCs that nevertheless have Secure Boot enabled. In my case, it was a Dell with a 3rd-gen Core chip (so about 13 years old). As of the last few weeks, it was suddenly BSOD'g within about 5 minutes of booting. Turns out it was because of MS's "Secure-Boot-Update" scheduled task, which is scheduled to run 5 minutes after login. It's explained in gory detail here (this is not my post, but it was where I found the answer), but the short version is that this legacy system would need fairly elaborate, manual certificate intervention since MS's automatic cert update method cannot work. How to do that is linked late in the thread. https://www.bleepingcomputer.c...od-caused-by-scheduled-task Secure Boot wasn't at all important for this particular PC, so I disabled it to be done with the problem.

App-local UI zoom — press Ctrl +/-/0 or use Ctrl+MouseWheel to scale the whole app, just like a browser. New External Apps: EA app, Ubisoft Connect, Battle.net, Rockstar Games Launcher, PowerShell, and Helium Browser. Bug Fixes Layouts no longer clip when the Windows text size slider is set above 100%. Accessibility: Narrator now announces setting names on toggles and dropdowns, previously unlabeled buttons are labeled, and progress updates are announced. Silent updates now respect your custom install location instead of reverting to the default. Cancel in Review Mode no longer clears your app selections. OneNote is now detected correctly for Win32 Click-to-Run installs. Clean Start Menu applies more reliably by also writing the group policy path. WinGet errors are no longer silent — error details now show in the terminal output. Fixed a startup crash on older Windows builds caused by a .NET runtime regression. Config import now converts power setting values correctly and no longer re-applies an already-active power plan. Improvements App icons load noticeably faster and cover almost everything now, including legacy capabilities and optional features — they come from a dedicated, checksum-validated icon repository and are fetched in parallel. Software & Apps polish: per-icon tooltips, extra table columns, an app sort dropdown, relocated search, and a cleaner compact view. A warning now appears when the Connected Devices Platform Service is set to Manual or Disabled, since some Windows features depend on it. • Of course the problem was Secure Boot's new certificates. Install media created by the official Media Creation Tool is already signed with a valid certificate from Microsoft, so maybe that certificate isn't "up-to-date" enough for machines with the new ones installed in the UEFI. There's really no other logical explanation.
