Opera named PC World best browser or not?

Recommended Posts

Yes, one of the categories was WEB, and as a "WEB BROWSER" Opera was the only one.

What I have demonstrated now is that there is clearly room for (mis)interpretation.

Asa knew this when he blogged about it. Why did he automatically assume that Opera was lying, when clearly there was room for making mistakes? Because it was a cheap shot, and he couldn't resist the temptation.

In other words: He accused Opera of lying knowing full well that it was probably just a misunderstanding. Unlike Opera, Asa's blog post was not a misunderstanding, because his posting history about Opera clearly shows that he takes any opportunity to put it down.

So if Asa claimed that Opera lied, but he did the same thing himself, what does that make Asa?

I think the word you are looking for here is hypocrite.

Until you can carry your argument beyond mere speculation, there is no basis for calling anyone a hypocrite.

The fact remains that the Opera website made a false/misleading claim, which has recently been removed. Your little personal "crusade" against Asa simply exposes your inability to cope with the mere thought that Opera is anything less than immaculate.

how does this affect your live? ?_?

big deal... its like saying

Parents clealy lied to you about where babies come from when you were young. If its a mistake on their part its a pretty big, and stupid, one. If its deliberate, then shame on them. I'm their son but still respected them as my parents.

It's false advertising, although it might not make your puppy eat your kitten still it's very serious in terms on business ethics, imagine you are choosing between a SonyEricsson phone and a Motorola, you like both very much and can't make the choice, in the end you end up buying the SonyEricsson simply because they say it got 5 oacar nominations, but in reality it did not.

Well, I've been trying to persuade people to stop arguing, but it certainly didn't work. :p Look at what section the topic's in - Back Page "NEWS". News is consisted of FACTS, and not to be argued. If a news article is being argued whether it's true or not, it's not a fact anymore. I think the topic has been lame all the way from the start, so I suggest the admins / mods to:

1) Lock the topic and stop this pointless argument.

And / or

2) Move this to "Web Browser Discussion".

I'm not attacking anyone personally, so am I trying to get myself flamed. I'm just trying to find a solution to end this argument.

Cheers everyone!

Hehe, Rogue` the Firefox fan... Opera is actually the fastest browser ;)

What does making a mistake have to do with business ethics? You are listening to Asa, who is known to twist the truth to suit his agenda. He lies about Opera lying.

It was a simple mistake, as explained a thousand times by now.

all these articles dont matter since they probably come from the same source, opera

find us the article on pcworld

See? The argument will never end...

Come on, get off it! Opera and Firefox are both cool, so is Maxthon. Why do we care about PCWorld's ranking? Use the browser you like and stop arguing!

By the way, I didn't say IE's not cool... (so did I say it's cool  )

Opera can do no wrong as long as they have the Black Ranger on their Web site.

MASTADON

But... He's white... and wears a red cape... and the costume is dark blue...? MASTODON!

Erm... not?

Let me explain this to you:

The Blender Comparation:

If I tell you that this blender is more powerful than that blender... then probably is, since they use the same source and can't be tweaked.

This is a decent comparation.

The Punch Comparation:

If I punch you, you would probably bleed and become dizzy.

But if you punch me, not only I would be okay, but I'll grab your arm and break it.

This is not a decent comparation. Why?

Because it depends on your health, your training and your psychological issues (I'm a ****ing psycho).

The same goes with browsers.

It would depend on:

  • * your machine
    * the way it's tweaked/optimized (or not)
    * your connection

So, you can't really tell which is THE fastest browser in the world, because of the factors I stated above.

If you had taken the time to actually read the speed test page, you would have seen that the goal was to be as objective as possible. So in general, Opera is the fastes browser.

I read it ages ago, good sir.

And I still say that those tests mean jack. It all depends in what I've said before.

@MellonCollie:

GREAT FIRST POST!

Welcome to Neowin!

As topic starter, I never personally said yes they are lying. Look at very first post I said IF its a mistake .. IF its deliberate, yea I made the topic title a little, excentric, but titles are suposed to be a headline to make people want to read the post. I never once got mad and called anyone a name or insulted anyone either.

That said, its over, they didn't win the award, the sites been changed, can't we all get along now ?

Maybe this fool should stop worrying about what others are doing and get back to Firefox. Not that I hate those 7 year old flaws that are reopened, I just think it's kind of childish to run into a slapping fight.

Word. I stopped having any respect for Asa the 3435363564th time he flamed on Opera. He must be the biggest, most heard of anti-Opera propagandist in the firefox community, and probably gets very excited any time he catches anything against Opera.

Now, according to what I've read so far it seems that PC World's categorization of awards appears to be not clearcut (mind you, not award themselves, but their categorization of awards), so that could definitely leave room for misinterpretation. However, it seems a bit wierd how, if this was deliberate, such a big thing like this was ignored by everyone else (inclung PCWorld, who should have contacted Opera to remove such claims) and suddenly a renowned firefox opera bashing boy comes out of nowhere to break the story, not saying that isn't possible.

I don't deny that this could be deliberate, eventhough I feel their browser is a solid damn product and it works best for me, shame on Opera if this was deliberate, or even negligent. Nonetheless, this could have been presented in a more professional manner so it doesn't come off as the author is a face slapping name basher, but hey! what can you expect from Asa?

Opera should simply explain their reasons, or just admit they are wrong, apologize, and simply move on, continue developing a better browser and not jumping on their toes over mistakes by firefox.

We've been on a winning streek lately, German magazine Chip concluding that Opera is better than Firefox and all. It seems that in the excitement over the positive press lately in combination with 8.01 release preparations, and with the summer heat finally arriving in Oslo, we've screwed up.

At closer inspection, it appears that Opera might not have won the best browser of 2005 award from PC World after all. Opera is listed as the only browser in the "Web" category, which I guess got us confused.

Now that we've installed fans to cool us down again, we've removed the "best browser" stuff from opera.com until PC World gets back to us to clarify things. We're posting a statement in the near future as well.

So no, we are not actually evil monsters. We are only human
