Opera named PC World best browser or not?

Recommended Posts

Opera was named best browser, alright, after Firefox.?

http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,a...63,pg,12,00.asp

It's still good software, but I have not seen where PC World said it's better than Firefox anywhere.? Anyone got anything?

Opera 8

WEB BROWSER (Free) Find Firefox too austere? Opera is an attractive, feature-rich alternative. Review

Yes, one of the categories was WEB, and as a "WEB BROWSER" Opera was the only one.

What I have demonstrated now is that there is clearly room for (mis)interpretation.

Asa knew this when he blogged about it. Why did he automatically assume that Opera was lying, when clearly there was room for making mistakes? Because it was a cheap shot, and he couldn't resist the temptation.

In other words: He accused Opera of lying knowing full well that it was probably just a misunderstanding. Unlike Opera, Asa's blog post was not a misunderstanding, because his posting history about Opera clearly shows that he takes any opportunity to put it down.

So if Asa claimed that Opera lied, but he did the same thing himself, what does that make Asa?

Agree with this 100%.

^ did you read the retraction from opera?

"feature-rich alternatice" does not mean better

obviously if firefox got top billing, opera isn't the best browser of the year.

and there was one category called "web browser" which contained FF (1) and opera (88)

Clarification on PC World Awards 2005

Opera Software announced on June 3 that its desktop Web browser, Opera 8, has once again received PC World's World Class Award for best Web browser. This has caused some confusion due to the fact that a competing browser received the award as "Product of the Year".

PC World's World Class Awards each year acknowledges "the finest products and services" in different categories. In addition, one product or service receives the "Product of the Year" award. Last year, Opera received the award for "Best Browser". This year's categories are less specific. While Firefox was awarded "Product of the Year" this year, Opera 8 was the only full Web browser to receive an award in the "Web" category. Opera understands that this may have caused confusion.

I think everyone that knows me knows I'm a Firefox user (some may say fanboy) but come on, do you really think they would intentionally lie about something that is so easy to check on, And would turn out to be embarrassing to them at the same time. I don't believe it was intentional at all. No one is stupid enough to believe they could get by with it enough to do it intentionally. I love my Firefox, but Opera isn't a bad browser either, just not my preference.

Just my 2 cents.. which is worth nothing.

Oops!

We've been on a winning streek lately, German magazine Chip concluding that Opera is better than Firefox and all. It seems that in the excitement over the positive press lately in combination with 8.01 release preparations, and with the summer heat finally arriving in Oslo, we've screwed up.

At closer inspection, it appears that Opera might not have won the best browser of 2005 award from PC World after all. Opera is listed as the only browser in the "Web" category, which I guess got us confused.

Now that we've installed fans to cool us down again, we've removed the "best browser" stuff from opera.com until PC World gets back to us to clarify things. We're posting a statement in the near future as well.

So no, we are not actually evil monsters. We are only human

Internecine warfare erupts over browser award

The browser blogs have exploded with ire, accusations and self-recriminations over the august and coveted PC World 100 Best Products of 2005 awards.

The mudslinging appears to have started when Opera issued a press release claiming to have won for "best browser." Mozilla staffer Asa Dotzler took exception to that claim, pointing out, along with some disparaging remarks about Opera's honesty, that Mozilla Firefox had won for "product of the year."

Dozens of flaming messages later, Opera issued a retraction and Dotzler was left defending his professionalism.

One peacemaker wrote: "Get some perspective will you? No one strangled your cat, OK? They're just browsers...software, right?"

What part of "browser war" doesn't this guy understand?

Posted by Paul Festa

Conclusion: Aza Dotzler is a <you know what think>

Does it matter if they lied?  Opera is still a stable product.  I mean how does claiming that their browser being named pc world's best browser make the product any better?

Yes, it does, because this would be the second marketing scam that they've used since the release of Opera 8.0. One of their developers claimed that he would swim from Norway to America if Opera 8.0 was downloaded 1,000,000 times within 4 days of the release. Downloads did hit that number, and they made up some bull**** story and he never ended up doing it. The only reason download numbers hit that high were because people wanted him to drown, so Opera would die. :p

First of all, that was the C E O.

Second, anyone who didn't take that in jest should question themselves as a human being.

It's a shame Opera wasn't more careful about this, but everyone makes mistakes. No one was hurt, caused any damage, and no other products were lied about. They made an honest mistake regarding themselves.

But, whoever did make the mistake should no doubt get punished somehow.

And of course, Asa just had to post about it. He can't turn down a chance to spread FUD about Opera.

Umm, this is nothing new.  Opera has been lying for years.

Remember the whole MSN.com debacle?

586038537

Uh.. what did they lie about? Mind posting some proof?

Don't worry, I don't expect you to actually do so, since there isn't any.

This was the reason I downloaded Opera, now i'm gonna uninstall their crappy browser, I like Firefox better anyhow.

least it doesn't have adware on it.

I hate companies that lie, I should file a complaint with the FTC, false claims of them being the best browser as voted by PC World magazine.

And the whole swim story too.

Boycott Opera now, I'm removing my cracked version of Opera 8.0 as of now ! :D :woot:

By changing the site, I think that that's pretty much admitting the original was a lie.  Oh wait, I mean a "simple misunderstanding"...riiiiiight.  If you believe that one I got an ounce of invisible potion I'd like to sell you.

586038610

Microsoft has lied as well.

Mozilla Foundation has lied as well.

What company hasn't?

I'm not trying to justify what happened, but please put it into perspective.

Proof please! Still waiting...

So by correcting a mistake, one is admitting that the mistake wasn't really a mistake after all?

Great logic there, imtoomuch! :x

    • Ocenaudio 3.19.3 by Razvan Serea Ocenaudio is a full featured, fast and easy to use audio and music editor. It is the ideal software for people who need to edit and analyze audio files without complications. Ocenaudio also has powerful features that will please more advanced users. To assist ocenaudio development, a powerful toolset of audio editing, analysis and manipulation called Ocen Framework was created. ocenaudio is also based on Qt framework, a well known library for cross-platform development. Cross-platform support ocenaudio is available for all major operating systems: Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Native applications are generated for each platform from a common source, in order to achieve excelent performance and seamless integration with the operating system. All versions of ocenaudio have a uniform set of features and the same graphical interface, so the skills you learn in one platform can be used in the others. VST plugins support Ocenaudio supports VST (Virtual Studio Technology) plugins, giving its users access to numerous effects. Like the native effects, VST effects can use real-time preview to aide configuration. Real-time preview of effects Applying effects such as EQ, gain and filtering is an important part of audio editing. However, it is very tricky to get the desired result by adjusting the controls configuration alone: you must listen the processed audio. To ease the configuration of audio effects, ocenaudio has a real time preview feature: you hear the processed signal while adjusting the controls. The effect configuration window also includes a miniature view of the selected audio signal. You can navigate on this miniature view in the same way as you do on the main interface, selecting parts that interest you and listening to the effect result in real time. Multiselection for delicate editions To speed up complex audio files editing, ocenaudio includes multi-selection. With this amazing tool, you can simultaneously select different portions of an audio file and listen, edit or even apply an effect to them. For example, if you want to normalize only the excerpts of an interview where the interviewee is talking, just select them and apply the effect. Eficient edition of large files With ocenaudio, there is no limit to the length or the quantity of the audio files you can edit. Using an advanced memory management system, the application keeps your files open without wasting any of your computer's memory. Even in files several hours long, common editing operations such as copy, cut or paste happen almost instantly. Fully featured spectrogram Besides offering an incredible waveform view of your audio files, ocenaudio has a powerful and complete spectrogram view. In this view, you can analyze the spectral content of your audio signal with maximum clarity. Advanced users will be surprised to find that the spectrogram settings are applied in real time. The display is updated immediately when altering features such as the number of frequency bands, window type and size and dynamic range of the display.
