iPod Nano - scratches

Recommended Posts

Geez, sounds like a major issue going on here. Ah well, no big deal to me. I always take care of my stuff, and if I get some scratches on it, big deal. It happens. As long as the iPod still works, I'm happy.

And yes, I'm getting a black model, even if it shows scratches easier.

Its still going to scratch, I kept it in my coin pocket or whatever its called, and it gets soft scratches from the fabric. I also got one where I had put it in my pocket with my wallet, and I think its caused a large (but faint) smudge like scratch (hard to describe what it looks like without a pic, but I so can't be bothered finding a camera)

Personally, I would strongly recommend waiting until the Nano Tubes are available (assuming they'll actually prevent this..), as I'm kind of reluctant to take mine out anywhere until I can some protection for it. :( (no idea how black will look in a tube though. :\)

If everyone is so concerned about these scratches, go buy a skin or sumthin, mayb it'll protect besides isn't just meant for listening to music.. lol

I think the photo idea is stupid, it doesn't even look that gr8 on it compared to other ones I've seen  Just my opinion :)

*sighs*

I hate to admit it

I got a small little ball scratch.

I've taken the Nano out ONCE, and left it in a soft cloth case every since.

It's easy to say "go buy a case" but even the tubes aren't out yet and I'm not risking it with a fake messed up shiznit.

uh... what sort of a bullsh*t comment is that.

I'm pointing out to people that are considering it or that have one that it got scratched even though i kept it in a soft cotton sleeve and only took it out of the home once. I dont throw it around either.

Yes I have to buy a case if I want to take care of it, NO the Nano Tubes are not out (yet in the UK) NO i dont want to risk getting a crap case, NO there aren't many made yet, and Apple CAN do something for future models by using toughter scratch resistant plastic. simple as that.

i think it looks good once the back side has a ton of scratches in it... defiantely very cool looking once youve had it for a while. if it really bothers you, after like a month, just run it under a buffing wheel... should take all of them out.

i had this same problem with my old timex iron man watch with a metal band... thing scratched like no tomorrow!

Ok guys theregister.co.uk is now running the scratches story

The Register nano scratches story

I have submitted the story to neowin, hopefully they will pick it up. Hopefully if the press get hold of this it will force Apple to address the problem.

Apple wont take back engraved ipods, but hopefully apple will have to address this issue and offer a fix. You could call apple, ask for customer relations, not normal call operator. And keep demanding they fix it. I returned mine to the apple store, still miss it though I hope they fix the problem soon.

Well, Apple took back my engraved Nano but I don't know if my replacement is going to be engraved or not. Yes, Apple is sending me a replacement.

Oh and here is the number I called. They patched me through to a iPod Tech Specialist and had the issue resolved after 1 hour and 50 minutes of chatting. I was told that upper management has this issue "Flagged"., whatever that means or what results from that I have no clue. Just trying to help my fellow Neowin Nanoids out.

Good luck.

What exactly did you say? I am going to call right now, but I want to say the right thing. I really dont want to send it back forever, I love the nano but the scratching is not cool and a replacement will just get messed up again. Will apple ever fix this problem. Should I complain get a replacement, and wait to open it till I get a nice case/cover.

I just told them the truth that I had unacceptable scratches after 4 hours of use, and my cell phone (only $60 I should add) after a year has none. The first couple folks told me to buy iKlean and a case. I asked why after 250 bucks I should even need those. Plus, I added in the www.apple.com discussion with 180+ replies about the issue.

I will do the same as well when my replacement comes in. Wait and find a good cover then I'll break it out of the box. Kinda sad.

try getting screen covers for a palm pilot or pocket pc. i use fellows "writeright" screen covers for color screens for my archos mp3 player. i had to cut them up a bit, but it works really well, and i happened to have one laying around from my palm pilot.

Yup got a replacement too, box should be here, gotta ship it back, than they will ship another one to me. I'll have a scratched free nano possibly by next wed. I really hope they fix this issue, I doubt it but whatever. I don't think I'll open it up till possibly a nice light case/plastic type thingy comes out. First time apple customer, I hope their i/powerbooks are not like this

I take it my info worked then.

I've ordered an Invisible Shield for mine - not bad price either, ?11 with free postage.

Saw it over on Gizmodo the other day http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/ipod/ipod-n...ield-126903.php

I read that this was just Scotchcal - which is the stuff they use to protect the areas of some expensive cars from scratching and so on. It seems pretty tough.

I don't expect anyone knows where you can buy strips of this stuff in the UK that are big enough to fit a regular Ipod?

Don't forget, regular ipods are hardly immune to scratching either.

    • Snap Inc. launches new SPECS augmented reality glasses (for 'just' $2,195) by Aditya Tiwari Image: Snap Inc. Smartglasses powered by augmented reality are the latest fashion because the smartphone market is slowly reaching saturation. Snap Inc. announced its latest AR-powered smartglasses, called SPECS, that aim to strike a middle ground between underpowered AI glasses and heavy headsets you can't wear all the time. Available in two sizes, Snap SPECS are made from high-performance Swiss TR90 polymer and feature removable inserts to support prescription lenses. Its 47mm model weighs about 132g; the bigger 52mm model weighs 136g. Snap Inc has been spreading the word about the new glasses for a while now. Earlier this year, it even spun off its smart glasses team into a subsidiary called Specs Inc. Its proprietary LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) display delivers a 51-degree field of view and 16 million colors. Snap says the device gives the feel of a 24-inch desktop monitor when you're working, and of a 115-inch home cinema screen placed about 10 feet away when watching a movie. A pair of custom stereo speakers and 6x high-SNR MEMS microphones are built into the temples of the smartglasses to deliver open-ear audio while you cast a screen, stream content, open a whiteboard, or collaborate with others. Snap Inc. patted itself on the back, saying the smartglasses don't need tethering or a puck to connect to a computer. Under the hood, SPECS draw its power from two Snapdragon processors: one for computer vision and another for running Lenses. The device supports fast hand tracking, low latency, and responsive interactions that help digital content feel anchored in the real world, according to the company, which claims that SPECS can "deliver 7-millisecond motion-to-photon latency." The smartglasses offer up to four hours of battery life on a single charge while providing AI assistance, Bluetooth notifications, Lenses, audio/video playback, and more. The battery life could jump to 20 hours of mixed use when the charging case is included. Image: Snap Inc. You can view and interact with AR Lenses anchored directly to the physical world around you, and an on-board AI assistant uses the camera to see what's around to answer questions or provide real-time help with tasks. Snap Inc. noted that it filed more than 7,000 patents during the development of SPECS. It's trying to build the required digital ecosystem around the smartglasses, and said that developers have already published hundreds of Lenses for SPECS. Moreover, their electrochromic lenses use the same technology available in Boeing 787 Dreamliner windows, enabling them to shift from clear to tinted in just 10 seconds when you walk out of your house. Snap SPECS are now available for pre-order on the official website with a $2,195 price tag ($200 refundable deposit). The smartglasses are expected to ship in the US, UK, and France during the Fall this year.
    • Sound Booster 1.13 Build 575 by Razvan Serea Increase volume on your laptop. Boost the volume of even very quiet speakers. Raise volume above maximum. Letasoft Sound Booster can be used as an extra amplifier when the volume of the program you are listening to is too low for comfortable listening and you feel that your PC’s speakers can produce a louder sound. This can be the case when the audio or video has been recorded at the level below normal. Or, for example, when the other person’s microphone you are talking to on Skype, is not working properly. There can be a plenty of other reasons why the sound is being too quiet and there is not much you can do about it except buy external speakers. Sound of any application that is being played in the system can be amplified up to 500%. Letasoft Sound Booster can raise volume of programs like web browsers, on-line communication software (Teams, Discord, Zoom), any kind of media player or games. Simply put, volume of virtually any program that can play any sound in PC, can be boosted to a comfortable level with Letasoft Sound Booster. You can control current volume with the pop-up slider from the system tray. Alternatively, you can assign system-wide hot keys for increasing and decreasing, and use them when you need to adjust volume Letasoft Sound Booster constantly monitors current gain level and prevents samples from clipping, thus reducing all major sound distortions. • I own these and the normal QuietComfort ones from Bose. The QC are amazing and I want to love these, but for the life of me, I have a terrible time getting them attached to my ears.
