Sorry, I know this is an old topic but it would be better to reply here than creating a new topic.

I'm trying to change my display name in my control panel but I get an error:

Sorry, an error occurred. If you are unsure on how to use a feature, or don't know why you got this error message, try looking through the help files for more information.
The error returned was:

Also Warned members who changed their names will have their names reverted back to their original. We do not allow members who have had warns to change their name. If you continue to change the names after being told not to or have had one reversed, then you will be warned or restrcited.

So you're basically saying I have to wait 4 or 5 months, or so, before I can change my display name?! :o

My warning wasn't even deserved, but I won't go into that right now; it's just very annoying that I cannot change my display name & that is the only restriction given to warned members (especially when a warning isn't deserved).

Yep, if you feel that any warning/moderation was unfair, you can always contact/discuss it with the member of staff who issued it, or contact a supervisor.

Oh right. Thank you both :) I just accepted it - I don't like confrontations & I'm pretty easy going. I was just going to accept this warning & wait for it to expire, but now I've found out I cannot change my display name I am extrememly annoyed.

I don't know if my warning was justified? I recieved it at the start of September as I was involved in a discussion where people were talking about downloading an artist's leaked album illegally, but I also said I would purchase the album when it was released as well as downloading the leaked version, just so I could here it before it was released. I also have purchased the album from HMV too.

Therefore I don't know if it was justified? I also don't know if anyone else in the thread received a warning? I am very upset I cannot change my display name because of it.

As was said above, pm the mod who warned you and/or a supervisor about it. Discussing your warning in public is never a good idea.

My login name, has had a tm in it since I registered my account way back when. Is there any way my actual login name can be changed because I cant login to it on Opera Mac

Thanks :D

i have seen a neowin veteran with a tm after his name. is that allowed?

Well they were disallowed because ipb had terrible support for unicode characters (and i'm not sure if they ever fixed it) and was causing issues with quotes and such but anyone that already had them were allowed to keep them. I'm not sure if the issue(/s) have been corrected yet or not.

So you're basically saying I have to wait 4 or 5 months, or so, before I can change my display name?! :o

Meh... i was at 80% and still have 60% to go... its been and will be a while before i can change my display name! Something you have to live with unfortunatly :)

Yeah, Radish. There are a few others with this also. I believe it is allowed now?

How does that make it NOT illegal?

It is illegal, it's just at the time I subconsciously didn't think about it being illegal because I was going to buy the album anyway.

Despite what I have said in the past, I think my warning was deserved and just.

I just wish I could change my display name as it was a silly mistake I made just because I didn't think about my actions first :(

Question for any mod:

I've ceased using this GreenLemon name a long time ago. I've updated my display name, but is it possible to get the login name changed as well? :)

No. That's the point of the display name feature.

    • You are clueless. The updates are done in the background so the next time you open Edge the updates are applied automatically. There is no need to close all your tabs. Just keep browsing like you normally do. Clearly you don't use Edge and are just one of those haters that complain for the sake of complaining.
    • I don't get this David. Can you explain it please.
    • Microsoft is busy. Lots of changes to be released imminently for Windows server or soon. Also, lots happening for next version as well. Third party virus scanning software is being moved out of Kernel mode to avoid repeat of Crowdstrike incident. Windows Protected Mode and Windows Ready Print no longer require third party print drivers to be installed. New storage stack being developed. New NVME drivers now available for Windows Server 2025 to improve local NVME drive performance by 60+ percent. NVME-Of of fabric being worked on for next release to improve network access to NVME drives. ReFs (next file system) now has ability to boot and will become default file system in next release of Windows Server. ReFs improves on NTFS in several areas including resiliency and reliability and scalability. New update stack is being worked on to unify Windows updates, and updates for drivers and first party/3rd party application software. A stricter and more robust third-party driver certification program (ODI) is being worked on to improve performance, thermals, battery life, and reliability on modern Windows hardware by tightening how OEMs and IHVs (Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, NVIDIA, etc.) build and ship drivers. There is a tone more but too numerous to mention.
    • Now disable that stupid OneDrive backup request when Windows starts please. So unbelievably frustrating to only have “remind me later” instead of “no and never ask me again”
