Vista Build 5342 Released - Official Topic

Not in the UK and probably the rest of Europe. Almost all BB modems in the UK are USB for some reason.

No, they're not. I know a lot of people that use Telewest blueyonder and only one connects via. USB.

thats why it wont install

i need to free space on the hardd rivr to something bigger than 46gb

Are you a legit tester? 'Cause I can't believe you can't diagnose that problem. You may have 46gb free, but is that on your primary hard drive? (The C: drive/boot drive). f*ck what the message says, I believe it has to be 500+ mb available on the primary hdd that is also the computer's boot drive. But, you knew that, aye? :|

I'm still awaiting my nomination...about another week or so, then I'll finally be able to pick up the next build...but i'm sure someone else'll help

That site that everyone is mentioning does contain a few inacuracies. Altho i will say that if you re-read his blog post he says anything with an astrisk(sp?) (the * thing) means it may or may not be in this build but should be in future builds

Now the Aero questions glass will not change for anyone untill the beta2/RC0 milestone build. There seems to be some confusion as to what will happen with various hardware if you run this build so I shall explain

Look below and match up your cards capabilities:

DX7: no glass, unless you hack the hell out of it as has been done in the past.

DX8: The screenshots you seen thus far is what you wil get. Your going to install the build and find yourself with the same glass thats been in every other build to date. Its glass rendered by use of png files inside the msstyle This is also known as Aero Express. Its not as fast as vector based glass, but dont take the current preformance as a standard because preformance enhancements are not yet being preformed to the builds. So png glass should get a lot faster, just wont be as fast or smooth as vector glass.

DX9: Users with a DX9 card will get what is truely and rightfully called "Aero Glass" (not matter what microsoft has told you is Aero Glass up to this point) This glass will be rendered with code, not image files. Thus it is rendered via pixel shaders and is vector based. It looks visually a lot better (from reports) than the glass we have now. A demonstration of the the capabilities of this glass was shown off with build 5060 at the last winhec ('04) This build did indeed use the vector based glass and did not use png files to make up the glass, dont really bother looking for screenshots of 5060 because I promise the glass will look drasticly different to what we are going to get with beta2

Now microsoft is correct in saying they dont have anything else but glass as the final UI. They are holding back 3 Key elements of the UI tho. Glass described above is the first, the second and third are Preview pane aurora and Desktop aurora. Both will be fully animated and visually appealing. Proof of the Preview pane aurora was found on the microsoft. com/ windowsvista site a few months ago. You can recognize this shot because it shows the control pannel explorer window with the preview pane on the left and a little thing that microsoft calls "vista flare" in the preview pane. The pane is green btw (in case you want to hunt down this shot.) More recently the "flare" item was shown on the front page of microsoft.com in a flash animation. I discovered the "flare" name by decompiling the swf and looking inside which revealed the "flare" name.

Now I dont care to argue any of this with anyone because im right. Microsoft has no reason to pull any of the above from vista, but should they that doesnt make me wrong because at the time of writing they are still going to put those 3 above mentioned items in vista (regardless of what you may think).

i have a 100gb drive partitioned with windows xp on half and wanted to put vista on the other half.

so should i make the ( c ) drive bigger, lets say 60gb or above ?

i want to test vista, but mostly i just want to have it

Nice synthesis, thanks for clearing up this :)

i cant install it ??? wtf

i have over 46gb on the drive i want to install it on

It's not complaining about the drive you want to install it on, it actually copies the installer data to another partition, most likely your current Windows drive so it can boot from it. Check to see if your C: partition has enough free space.

Try checksumming the file (or rather, check the CRC) and see if yer ISO's corrupted. Also, if possible, try burning to DVD. And no, don't make the drive bigger - I've installed all Longhorn/Vista builds from my start in 4074 onto a 9gb partition with complete success in terms of available space. Of course, I hate using virtual drives and always burn the dvds...but still.

i want to test vista, but mostly i just want to have it

I'm not saying this is a problem, but really, couldn't you come up with something better than that ? Most of the rest of the topic readers just "want to have it" -- but if all the Connect testers were like that, well, that'd just be bad news...[thankfully they're not though, but remember what you're representing]

They're free-floating as well as attached (you open em up initially attached, then you detach them by dragging them off.) Nice stuff, but honestly - I wish I would have seen a more amiable progression that included some sorely missed features of the 4074 sidebar.

well there saying i dont have enough drive space on my ( c ) boot drive. i may have enough to install on ( g ) drive.

i have a 250gb sata drive i could use for vista, then partition it to run xp on half and vista on the other. ive heard you cant run vista beta on a sata drive ?
