The Official NDS Homebrew Thread

Newegg has one for about $41 after shipping. That's the cheapest I've seen. The cheapest I found on Pricewatch was $45 (Unity Electronics), and at Best Buy or Circuit City they're more like $65 if you're lucky. Kingston at Newegg and SanDisk at Unity Electronics and the retail outlets.

Bricking and Saving questions:

1:

I read on comparisions between flashing the DS and simply using a passkey that you can brick your DS using either method.

I understand that Flashme has a security feature that, once correctly in place, can allow you to re-flash your DS in case your firmware gets messed up. I can understand how you could brick your DS in the process of putting the Flashme firmware on the DS in the first place, so I can see why that is handy.

But I also read that if you don't use Flashme and just use the passkey that you run the risk of permanently bricking your DS because you don't have that security feature that the Flashme provides. My question is this: what would you do that that would cause your firmware to get corrupted or overwritten if you never flashed the firmware to start with? Does the simple task of using a passkey device risk deleting your firmware? This rationale doesn't seem to make sense to me as a con of not flashing your DS.

Can anyone clarify?

The only other way you can have your firmware bricked is through a virus. That shouldn't be a problem though as long as you get your apps from a reputable place and let others test it first and report back. The risk of bricking your DS is much higher from trying to flash than a virus IMO. Plus flashing voids your warranty.

Your question about the EZ4 I can't answer as I've never used it. GBAtemp will be able to answer it for you though.

^ MicroSD? There is a _MICRO_ SD now? The hell is the point? The SD is freaking small as it is. Ah the hell with it, I'll just grab the M3 mini...or whatever the hell it's called.

A normal SD card would never fit into a DSL sized cart. Not even the MiniSD would. Here's a size comparison between the three SD types:

The MicroSD is about the size of my thumbnail.

2:

I've been reading on the EZ4 and have ordered one (the lite model), but I'm not sure I understand one thing, and that is saved NDS games.

...

GBA and DS games both use a .sav that's generated by the PC client, and both save in the same way. While you're playing, the save is written to the EZF4, using a rechargable battery I believe. Then next time you start up, it writes that save to the .sav file, which is kept in a folder called "Saver". You don't really notice it, all that happens is when you turn it on again after playing a game, a screen comes up for a couple of seconds saying "Saving so-and-so game". You don't actually have to do anything. Sorry the explanation isn't great, but I hope it helps anyway :)

Well, the M3 Lite isn't even out yet and word from M3 is that they are already in the process of releasing yet another cart. This one will be a slot 1 solution (in other words, it's the same size as a DS game and goes in the DS slot). No word on release date yet, but the chip has already been sent to manufacturing.

This info comes from the admin of the Unofficial Supercard Site:

I got word from Danny that the M3's version of the DS-Xtreme (DS slot loading mod) is done. They are waiting for the chip maker to complete with the mass production of there chip. There will be 2 versions, 1: A Micro SD cart and 2: A internal memory unit (like G6 has) and will come in 4G & 8G. BOTH versions have passme built into them.

Keep in mind that this won't support GBA, so if GBA is important to you, just go with the M3 Lite. For me, I think this is the perfect solution though, so I'm going to skip the M3 Lite and wait for this...

man i want to wait this one out but it could be a couple of months for this yet.. as i don't have any solution at present i don't really awnt to wait any longer. as always there will be something new and better out a few months after that. but this is great that m3 have jumped on this idea and im sure they will do it right! then next 6 months or so of home brew could be pretty exciting! especially if things start taking advantage of opera browser's gba slot attachment.

Amazon has the microsd for $37.

Anyone know the speed differences between the normal Scandisk microsd and the Ultra II??

It's still more expensive from Amazon. It was $45 after shipping at Amazon using the cheapest shipping solution.

As for speed, this guy compares speed in his review of the SuperCard Lite.

In short there's a difference, but if you're using his particular setup (SuperCard Lite) it shouldn't matter much. It's a greater difference with the MiniSD hardware.

Both will work fine with the M3. The newer Superkeys have a splash screen now as well. If you are going with an M3, I would go for the Passcard 3 just to assure complete compatibility (even though they are exactly the same and made in the same factory).

I have one of the newer Superkeys :(

I'm about to order my MicroSD 1gb right now $30 with free shipping!

enjoy!

Sweet, I was going to wait to get a 1gig card, but why when it's already down to $30 total cost! Awesome find.

Edit: I had to pay tax because I'm in IL, but still, $32 total cost.

I wish I'd waited, I ordered a 1GB microSD card from newegg a few days ago, should be here tomorrow. I also wish I knew about Real Hot Stuff, instead I had ordered the Superkey and SC Lite from kicktrading (which is very fast btw). Still kind of hard to believe that the price I paid for all this homebrew stuff could have bought me another DS Lite  But I enjoy the DS lite a lot esp. with New Super Mario Bros. game. If only the onyx black was released earlier.

Anyways, I'm still amazed by all the advances.

That list isn't completely up-to-date, there's a new NoPass thingy called "PassWe 3". Cheapest on the market, and great quality, apparently.

Yep, that one's pretty new. I would expect it will be added to the list in the next update.

Looks like the EZ Flash team have re-designed thier EZ Flash IV Lite to be flush fitting:

We knew it would happen eventually, and now it looks like it has! Reliable news source yyjoy have a photo of a new design of the EZ Flash IV Lite!

No more is known about the new design at the moment, except that some of the available colours will be white, pink and ice blue.

Whether this is just a replacement case for the existing PCB (unlikely, but would be great) or a whole new case and PCB is unknown.

We'll bring you more news on the new re-design as we get it.

There's a new homebrew site called Dev-Scene that looks pretty good. Hopefully the forums will take off and give some decent competition to gbadev.org (competition is always good). I've added the link to the links section of the 1st post as well.
