Vista RC1 Public Version

Recommended Posts

Just to update on my DL I am DL at about 50kbps and i started my DL at 4:00pm Yesterday. Wake up this morning and DL speed still about the same with 9 hours left to go. :( Kinda Sucks to have to wait so long. I just hope it is worth the wait.

Also is anyone using the Sound Blaster Live 24Bit Sound Card with RC1? If so how did that go? With Beta2 I had a hard time installing the driver for it b/c of that driver validation thing. I am just worried that I may not be able to get it to work this time since they took out a way to disable the validation.

anyone else having problems downloading the x64 ISO ? Mine always wants to download only 907 bytes.

Also -- anyone got 4.1 or 5.1 or surround sound of any kind for Sigmatel chips working?

***UPDATE*** Used the web download and get this  -- well as long as it works

Ok Look I am going to say it again. I had the same problem and the way i fixed it was by restarting my computer b/c after the download manager is installed for some reason it needs to restart for something in it to work right. Dont ask me what, but thats what I had to do to get it to work. I am also DL the x64 version right now but like i posted earlier I have been DL it since yesterday.

your lucky mine is DL at 50kbps

vista RC1 installed and running, since the office refresh isnt out yet, would office xp work? i assume so? (got a legal copy around doing nothing)

the original Office 2007 beta 2 still works on RC1... you just have to download it from MS office site.

Any way to retrieve a beta 2 key? Didn't get any mail from MS...

Alot of people have been asking that question but all I can figure out is that either no one knows how or there is no way to. Sorry but i guess you will have to wait till you either get the email or go sign up again for it. Just give it a little time you will get the e-mail others have. I still haven't got the e-mail but i have my old keys. Just think about how many e-mails microsft is having to send out.

I hate the look of the UI (black has got to go). And the use of transparency is confusing. And although I can't put my finger on the reason, explorer seems more difficult to navigate than it did in XP. There are definitely some improvements, but I simply can't seem to get excited about Vista. Especially considering that it's a product of many years of development.

I like the new black look but you are right about the explorer it is quicker changing pages but you cant find any of the stuff you need. ex I was wanting to e-mail a page to my dad and it took me forever yo find out how. I finally had to turn the classic menus on just to see if it was still there and it was but i finally found it in the vista menus but its not like it just jumps out at you.

yeah, i dont have a key either. if anyone has one that would be willing to give me. does anyone know when the registration wll open again? it just says in the coming weeks. what does that mean? i hope it will be next week.

sigh, why didnt i sign up for beta 2 i would be using it by now. so does anyone have a spare key?

also, can anyone confirm that i dont need a key to actually install vista only to validate. that way i can install and then wait for a key.

So far RC1 seems to be working pretty well... :)

But of course it still needs tuning and polishing..

EZ-antivirus installed fine.. But I had to disable Defender from checking it at start up..

Now if there just would be a decent firewall available...

Hopefully nVidia is readying new drivers because those first beta RC1-drivers aren't good enough.. :pinch:

Edit: Ashampoo Burning studio seems to work so far... =)

Yea, I wouldn't mind SLI support :p and firefox rendering seems a bit sluggish.....and whats wrong with the in-built firewall? Its all i ever used on XP.

So far, overall, i'm very pleased with RC1 :)

Why does the downloader & direct browser download only d/l 907 bytes & say it is finished? I can't download the full ISO file.

Are you running Zone Alarm? I found that if I disable ZA during the download that it downloads properly, if I leave ZA running I get the 900 byte "download complete" issue.

This sucks that I dont have a key. Just sitting there on my desktop waiting to be used but I cant because of a poxy key.

oh so you do need a cd key to install simon said that you didnt. only to validate :(

Im asuming that it will be the same or similar to XP, you can install it, but then it gives you 20 days to activate, after which time you cant use your PC. Would be in a right mess if this happens and you dont get a key after x amount of time.

I dont have a key either. I hate looking at the .iso sitting on my desktop. I have heard that they will be offering more keys in next several days. But I read that on digg, so who knows if its true or not.

You do not need a key to install. When it asks for key, leave it blank and click next,it will then ask you to go back, say no.You will then be given the option to install any of the 8 (i may have missed number) different versions. After install is done, you will be given 14 days to try out before it needs to be activated.

To activate you will need to be a member of "Customer Preview Program (CPP)" of which ms will reopen in the coming weeks for new membership signups.

For fun i installed both ends of the spectrum (i partitioned drive before hand using a linux live distro) first partition-vista ultimate and second partition-vista starter (final release will only be for 3rd world).

I was hoping starter vista would be a real cut down in size, but it still comes in at over 6 gigs and other then some nice different wallpapers it's really not worth the time to try it out.

Ultimate vista is the way to go,if you want to try RC1 out. That being said i have still found a number of bugs (changing theme's and performance visual effects changing levels related) and the somewhat none uniform UI.

    • I don't understand the vision. Do people really want to buy a new computer from Dell with 6 browsers installed? We all keep asking for Microsoft to stop having so much junk on their OS, and adding a bunch of browsers seems to go against that. Ideally, we would just be asked what browser we want during OOBE but Google is just going to pay Dell a bunch of money to include Chrome. Additionally, would you want your phones to start including all the browsers too when you get them? The only thing I ever wanted was to be able to uninstall IE or edge and I believe you are now able to. I do agree that microsoft needs to chill with their "are you sure you don't want to try edge before you install chrome" ads when going to download chrome.
    • The funny thing here is that like 70% or so of the web browser users use 'Google Chrome' as web browser. What I don't understand is that why on earth would ANYONE choose 'Google Chrome' on Windows when 'Microsoft Edge' is not just better in most things, but it's already there right out of the box for the Windows users. Microsoft Edge has less data collection (yes, that's a fact), less RAM usage and is more optimized for Windows (as it's a Microsoft product) right out of the box. I'm sure you will come with the argument of bloat in Microsoft Edge. Sure, but most of that can be fixed with a simple tool (there are many good ones out there for this). Yes, that require a couple of clicks in the same way as it requires several clicks to install 'Google Chrome'. And I'm sure you really love the 4 GB of AI-slop 'Google Chrome' is downloading without you agreeing to it. Fun right? Sure, the way Microsoft is pushing Microsoft Edge on users might not be the best way of doing it and might need to change. But I would never choose 'Google Chrome' over 'Microsoft Edge' today anyways. I'm sure there was a period back in the days when 'Google Chrome' actually was better in most things, but that period is not today.
    • JetBrains rolls out IntelliJ IDEA update with Markdown preview fixes and more by David Uzondu Image via JetBrains IntelliJ 2026.1.3 from JetBrains has landed, bringing several highly requested bug fixes that target common UI glitches and terminal rendering issues. If you run tmux inside the integrated terminal, the IDE no longer renders the cursor above the active line. The Markdown preview bug, which was fixed in this release, had annoyed developers for quite some time, as the preview pane failed to render images saved outside the project directory. Instead of displaying the actual image, the IDE simply showed a broken image icon, a problem that stuck around for two years before this update. Over on Windows, developers running WSL can now use wsl.exe to spin up their environments without losing terminal functionality. In previous builds, launching a terminal shell with something like wsl.exe -d ubuntu inside a Windows-based project broke both shell integration and active process detection. Other bug fixes in this release include: An issue where Gradle sync incorrectly reported success as a failure on WSL when using Gradle 9.5.0. A syntax highlighting bug that flagged valid Java for-loop initialization blocks with multiple statements as incorrect. A warning bug that triggered a false non-null local variable alert when using JSpecify annotations. A database generation bug that hid the option to use a DELETE statement instead of a TRUNCATE checkbox. A Kotlin highlighting failure where an assertion error in the Gradle redundant library inspection broke error highlighting. A UI bug where the ComboBox popup lacked a maximum height restriction. A Snowflake syntax error where DataGrip failed to support the "create temp" command. A Svelte syntax parsing failure that incorrectly flagged quotes inside inline expressions. A VCS repository manager deadlock that triggered thread pool exhaustion. A memory leak where the LazyTree component kept all previous versions of a tree in memory. IntelliJ 2026.1.3 is the third bug fix release for the IntelliJ 2026.1 series. The first one landed back in April with a fix for the WSL Python interpreter freeze, another fix for guest participants using Emmet abbreviations, and corrected WildFly server deployment errors.
