I really like this concept but i was wondering if anyone really uses the documents and music features offered by windows?

personally i have never used it.

I know what you mean, but I think Vista will curb that trend. Now, these 'documents' folders are the only ones applications can write to without having admin access (or at least it seems that way).

In a perfect world, these folders could be a godsend for keeping things in order.

OK, well it took me a while but here is my idea of the perfect OS. Media Center is obviously the inspiration here...

And I know, I know... there are no actual 'windows' in this mock-up GUI - but I feel windows just make things confusing :p

So I guess this party died as quickly as it started... shame really, was looking for some good GUI ideas to steal.

I've got loads of new fresh ideas - on paper, but its a case if i can be bothered to make them or not...

My own concept of Windows Rome, creating using Photoshop. Similar to Digital Soft's early concepts, but mine include an extra sidebar which makes the interface much more informative. Im actually not very good with Photoshop and i've only used it a few times, so plz give comments :) (Sorry for big image size)

Very nice! i think your design is the most beautiful, if you can add some shadow to the bottom menu circle it would look even better!

nice but where's the URL bar

^ My glass looks so much better :p

You just need to work on the close, etc buttons. Also the picture at the side of the window looks kind of random, try putting the aurora thing you had in before instead. The folder icon is wayy too big, and you need to add some styles to the text.

Don't forget to add, file, view, etc to the top of the window and an address bar. ;)

It looks good mate (Y) I'm impressed.

..Mate..its your glass as a starter(you helped me with it..)

Close etc buttons is getting worked on for the moment.

Personally I like the Big Icon but that can be changed aswell

The Sidebar thingie in the window was extracted from one of my own photographies, but ill see if i can find something better. And Styles to the text will probably be added..And a change of resolution..Going Widescreen..

(EDIT: fast update, old one: http://img164.imageshack.us/my.php?image=vistamockup3py8.jpg for those interested of seeing it )

Awesome! Do you think maybe the start menu could become contained around that glassy area around the orb, making it branch off from it or something?

this looks freeking awesome!

Thanks ;)

I wonder if Microsoft will do somethign like this on a more official scale. They already have their hardware design competition... I want to see a comp where a working GUI has to be mocked up in Expression Blend or something like that... It'd take time, but it could have big rewards (money)... right?
