nl|nighthawk
Im not going to touch longhorn until its in Release Candidate (public beta/rc phase).. from what Ive heard; this is what happens.. please dont flame me if Im wrong, its just what ive heard from multiple sources: Longhorn phones home to Microsoft, like ET. Microsoft logs your IP Address and gets information, etc. Microsoft then sends that information to the FBI. You have the Men In Black knocking at your door. Im happy with Windows 2000 Professional now.. good and stable  Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/51000-the-official-longhorn-alpha-thread/page/8/#findComment-523450 Share on other sites

Do you acually think microsoft is going to send the FBI to your door? And secondly what about people outside the USA? The FBI have no power in Canada or any other countries for that matter. As for longhorn phoning home use etherreal with wincap, see if you can find it calling microsoft... i certantly havent been able to. Before you comment about a program you HAVE not used Im not going to touch longhorn until its in Release Candidate (public beta/rc phase).. You should try it out and test your theories.Greenmuncher Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/51000-the-official-longhorn-alpha-thread/page/8/#findComment-523468 Share on other sites
Osiris
yes whilst it is very very unlikely federal authorities would waste their time with one person, or by one person at a time. The FBI does have agencies in over seas locations, so does the Australian Federal Police etc and other countries federal agencies, and whislt the FBI for example cannot execute operations and activites they aide the Federal Police here with intelligence gathering, and various operational logistics. In any event alot of software raids that have gone down over seas, and even one in Australia was done with the help of the FBI, it was in the news at the time etc so just because ya outside the US dont think your 100% secure, as I said chances of them wasting time comming after one person using Alpha software is obviously incredibly slim, but I was just trying to make you aware that the FBI and other national Federal agencies generally have influences with one another. Also, I didnt upgrade.. im just saying, I used to use Windows XP before, and I decided to put Windows 2000 on and it seems to be alot more stable than what XP has been for me... im not comparing Windows 2000 with Longhorn (sorry if I had misworded this in my original post) Osiris has also made a VERY good point -- this is something I was worried about at the beginning; I was not informed that it phoned home, etc at any time before I hooked it to the internet; its only AFTER I found out that I had already had it connected to the internet; therefore it was too late... oh well...
