For those of you anxiously waiting for your copy of Office 2007 (like myself), there is a good solution for the delay. Go to this site: http://us1.trymicrosoftoffice.com/ . You can download a 60 day trial of Office 2007 (the site is run by M$, so it's legit). Download the trial of Office Professional (the one we're getting for free) and when your key comes in the mail for the Power Together Office offer, you can convert the trial to the full version. I did this last night (minus the converting to full version) and as far as I can tell, the trial doesn't exclude any features. I was really happy when I saw this b/c I just reformatted and installed Vista last night and didn't have any Office disc or anything to install Word and Outlook, so a bit of searching found the method described above. 100% legal and legit through Microsoft.

heh, you sound like a kid opening his present on Christmas eve because he knows the real thing is so close but can't wait any longer :p

AWESOME.

I cant even install mine.

Im trying to do the UPGRADE, and after it reboots for the first time after setting up the install files, I get a bluescreen with no information besides telling me to run CHKDSK /F (WHICH IS THE DAMN DVD!)

I DONT want to have to go through a clean install but it looks like thats my option now...unless anyone has a solution for a similar problem.

"chkdsk /f" does not fix the "F" drive. The "/f" flag means to fix any errors. They want you to run chkdsk /f on all partitions on your hard drive.

Hope that helps.

Hah idiot!!!

Think thatll do anything?

Im doubtful :(

Apparently there ARE people experiencing this problem...but none of their troubleshooting has really helped me.

Years upon years ago, back when I first starting doing my own OS installs, I realized that the only way worth doing it was clean. Doing an OS upgrade just seems silly. No matter who makes the OS and how hard they try, there'll always be debris left over from the previous version. Any time you get a new OS, format, install it clean.

I figured that was a general rule of thumb by now in the tech community...only the new kids take the 'upgrade' option seriously.

there are no more free copies being given out, that sucks

Yeah, you are about a month and a half late.

The W9 is only if you ordered both since it totals to more than $600.. you have to pay taxes. :)

This has been gone over before, but since you apparently missed it: you personally won't have to pay any taxes on it, the W-9 form is just for Microsoft's records so they can show to the IRS that they gave you over $600 worth of free stuff.

Hah Im not really a 'new kid'...and for anyone else asking advice of me I'd definitely say blow away the old OS...

Ive just got a lot of programs to reinstall and reconfigure, and it woulda been real nice if the upgrade sort of 'took care of that' for me.

I used Acronis TI 9 to make a system image of my main HD onto a secondary I just got...so I guess that + the recovery boot cd is there in case of emergency [break glass], but ill have to back up some \Program Files\xxxx directories to keep some configuration or application data...

such a pain!!!

anyone else try upgrade?

A friend of mine did receive both Vista and Office yesterday here in NY. I didn't go for office since i got it free from work ;) Thanks to whoever posted that site info back a few weeks ago. I didn't believe it was going to happen but i did it anyway and POOF!! A free Vista business.

I love free :)

So someone who requested both did indeed get both?

now I don't feel nearly so bad! ...still waiting here too... hopefully tomorrow since other people in KC area got theirs :)

"

i wish i knew about this sooner, looks like ill have to buy vista"

...yeah it went fast. good news is, it's a lot cheaper than originally thought to be! check newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.....x=0&Go.y=0

...please note that those are OEM copies, meaning that they're tied to the system that you install it on...

.....waiting patiently for Vista in mail... did not sign up for office.

Here is a real test on OEM Vista activation:

http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=352&a...xpert&pid=4

They swapped their motherboar 3 times, and MS let them activate without issue.

    • Linux 7.2's first release candidate gets off to a good start by Paul Hill Credit: Larry Ewing It has been a few weeks since the release of Linux 7.1, and in that time, the Linux 7.2 merge window has been open, where developers can submit their features and patches ready for the upcoming release. That window is now shut, and the release candidate phase has begun so that new features can be tested and further fixes applied. According to the founder of Linux, Linus Torvalds, this week’s release candidate looks “reasonably normal”. Although we are super early in the release candidates, this is a good sign as it makes it more likely that an eighth release candidate will not be needed. Torvalds even mentioned that the update’s stats are only larger than they really are because there was another AMD header drop with a third of the patch just being AMD GPU register definitions, which aren’t big changes but make the code contributed look larger overall. In addition to this, he noted that just over half the patch is drivers, even when excluding the AMD register dump. The rest of the changes are spread out over architecture updates, tooling, documentation, and core kernel updates. In the next week, Torvalds says that he will be chilling out, taking the week “mostly off”. Despite this, he will be reading emails and keeping up with things, so if he is slow responding, now you know why. He said he is hoping for a calm week, but we will just have to see if the second release candidate is actually like that. We should expect seven or eight release candidates before Linux 7.2 is released, so expect it around the end of August. If you missed it a few weeks ago, be sure to check out our coverage of Linux 7.1's release.
