Force Firefox extensions to work in the latest version

When Firefox updates to a new version, some extensions are disabled. However, you can easily edit the extensions to make Firefox re-enable them -- no particular expertise required.

Problem

Extension authors sometimes abandon their creations, and when Firefox enters a new version, it will refuse to use extensions that are not tagged as compatible.

Solution

Basically, the extension installer is just a zip archive. The installation information file inside contains a "maxversion" note to Firefox letting it know what versions the extension is appropriate for. Just change this value and you're good to go!

Warning! The extension may not be installable for a reason. If you break Firefox, close it and start it in safe mode, then remove the extension.

They've been in effect since the past few betas actually, and at least Vista's theme saw a further update in RC1. :)

I'm starting to be quite satisfied with it now, although I'd prefer to not have the back/fwd buttons look like that in small icons mode, I don't think they fit in. :(

But otherwise I like it, and the Places library ("manage bookmarks") use the Windows Vista Media Player look now too in Vista. (new in RC1)

I don't know how to use the Vista icons in XP or vice versa, but I think I've heard about it and that there is a way (unless someone replied here already and I missed it)

Sweet, I hadn't noticed that, I almost thought they were going to abandon their sexy mockup. looks MUCH better now, it was a mess in vista before.

the home icon in vista looks kinda washed out. i preferred the deeper blue used in the reload button.

I downloaded one of the betas yesterday before I found out about RC1 and used it. It was ok, but after I installed addons and browsed about, it crashed. And Wont even run. I uninstalled and installed RC1 and the same problem is happening, wont even run.

I had that problem, I couldn't even get FF2 to run after that. Some plugin really messed it up (I think it was flash). Luckily I had a backup, though, so I was able to rescue it.

its a lot faster starting up then the betas and the betas ran great for me so i am happy :)

aside from the questionable move of moving the "default browser" box to the installation steps and pre-ticked, this seems to be quite a solid build.

I had that problem, I couldn't even get FF2 to run after that. Some plugin really messed it up (I think it was flash). Luckily I had a backup, though, so I was able to rescue it.

Any possible solutions? I really want to try out RC1 but its not having any of it.

I completely removed Firefox 2.0. Profile/everything and did a clean install of Firefox 3.0 RC1.

Create a new profile, then try adding in the parts from your old profile (bookmarks etc.). I'm pretty sure it was a plugin that did the damage, so as long as you don't install it again (I think it was a plugin designed for FF1 or FF2 breaking FF3 - FF3 wont let it install so you should be safe) it should work.

I did the manual upgrade to FF3 RC1. I had sort of assumed it would replace FF 3 beta 5 but I just clicked "next, next, next" without reading any of the dialogs. RC1 ended up replacing FF2 and leaving FF3 beta 5 alone.

That's fine with me, FF 3 beta 5 works with all the extensions that I need. I have temporarily gone back to it but it isn't a long-term solution.

Yeah because firefox 3 beta's install in "Firefox Beta 5" folder in the program files, and the RC's use the default firefox folder which two resided in.

AVG's link scanner in 8.0 crashes most versions of FF if anyone is using that. Need to disable that extension/add on.

The only thing that still bothers me is the back and forward buttons. They look like **** honestly. Besides that, everything is perfect. I think it integrates perfectly to Vista. Even though it's not as pretty as IE7, it is superior to IE in every other way.
