Anyone Else Think Windows 7 Is Going To Suck?

Mmm flame time.

After seeing how badly Vista sucked, I won't be suprised if Win 7 sucked as well. Microsoft has just been building up and up on an aging kernel.. total rewrite would be nice!

This will be a Vista clone with some additional functionality, more RAM consumption, and higher hardware requirements (though the latter is becoming less of an issue as we progress, but can't Microsoft at least be efficient in its usage?)

I'm sticking to XP for as long as I possibly can. Don't bother changing what works well. Glitz and glamour of Vista doesn't attract me, it's the performance that XP does.

But, touch screen will not be a requirement for Win 7.. just some useless eye candy that has no practical application for most users (why lift an arm when you can move a mouse? It just seems useless.. limited applications like that Surface technology)

You know, if you dont post "Flame Time", you wont get as bad comments, unless your a person who likes to get angry, then, please keep your "angry" comments to your self. Even if you posted that whole comment without "flame time" then you wouldnt get such bad comments.

As with your 1st and 2nd paragraph, Vista didnt suck. Did you have any guts to try it? No. If you didnt realise, the slow "transferring" performance times are gone, and LOTS of drivers now support Vista. It wasnt M$'s fault that the people who make drivers, didnt make it for Vista. Another problem with Vista is that M$ added features, like Virtual Folders, got removed, so did the appeal of Vista. When Vista came out, people hated it before they even tryed. Around 60% of people who say "vista is gay LOLLL!!!!111!!!" (i was like that once, i know.), have never tryed it. Im not saying that you have, but im just making a point. MS have learnt from there mistakes, so thats why Win7 wont suck. They wont make the mistakes. Im happy that they are staying sort of on the Vista Foundation, because it is EXTREMLEY Stable and Easy to use. And believe it or not, but its based on NT, LIKE XP!

Also, the touch screen is a feature for people who use tablets or touch screens. They do exist. My friend has a touch screen. They put the features for the WHOLE range of people, not 3 people who just want performance, but for the people who actually like change. Change is great, even if it has its bad times.

I would like you to develop a OS like Microsoft. You couldnt do it.

I don't think Windows 7 will suck. I think if they keep the overhead down build on the reliabilty throw in a few cool features like mobile broadband and you have something people will like. The opening up of the themeing should please plenty. I think it will be good.

Haha when I typed "flame time" I meant that I was getting ready to see a thread filled with words in caps and explanation points. I'm just stating the obvious in an intelligent manner; I did have the guts to try Vista on a 2.6 GHz C2D, 4 GB RAM, and an 8800GT. Even after SP1 the performance was mediocre and I reverted back to XP. I'm not questioning the driver support as Vista has been out for awhile and manufacturers have had time to work on them. I would like to say that Microsoft learned from their mistakes, but I don't think they have. In my opinion, ME and Vista were such mistakes, and hopefully they learn from those two OS's to make Windows 7 great. I had my hopes up when Vista was coming out, but once I used it I was dismayed (so I'm not getting my hopes up too high for Windows 7 either; prove me wrong Bill Gates!). I have never encountered any major stability problems with any Microsoft OS's (two blue screens on each OS, both driver related errors).

Yes there are people that do use touch screens, I'm just saying a lot don't and wouldn't have much use for one if all a person does is surf the net and play an occasional game. I do hope Windows 7 is change for the better, but like I said I'm not getting my hopes up. Heh and I don't plan on writing any operating systems anytime soon.

I just saw the demo video and I'm really starting to hate Windows 7 (codenamed Vista with touch or Vistouch). I hate the fact that I will have to go out and buy a touch screen and I can only imagine the monster of a computer it would take to run it. Why doesn't Microsoft take it one small innovation at a time and try not to make operating systems with the same requirements as a Crysis, Far Cry 2, and Gears of War Hell spawn.

But that slow, bloated resource hog is Open Source. Which apparently makes up for everything. ;)

I've not even gone in search for the full details on Win7 yet but from what i've heard it sounds like the perfect OS. I'm actually looking forward to it... - Currently a Vista user and liking it.

Sorry for the misunderstanding :)

Vista shouldn't have lagged on you, but anyway, I congratulate you on having the guts to install vista on your comp (unless it was pre-installed :p )

Someone forced me to install it on this computer, and im happy they did :D

Also, im assuming that you haven't got the pre-beta of Win7 so, besides one driver issue on my computer, it works awesome :) The compatibility and Windows update has improved massively.

I also applaud you on not getting your hopes up like some other people on this forum.

Hope Windows 7 works for you (in the future :) )

I too have Windows 7 installed and the ram percentage after start up with nothing starting on login besides the OS is down from 29% to 23% of my 4 gb machine, of course others results may vary, and its not an actual test but more of an interesting observation. I haven't had any driver issues and the only program issue is with Empire Earth 2, keeping in mind I have at least 40 programs on here as its my main PC., so all in all very stable, not 1 BSOD and the superbar is great. ;)

I've tried the latest build (6956) and so far it's looking good. First booted up it was using just 625MB of RAM with 4GB installed on the 32 bit version. Features I like:

  • Aero Peek - Instantly peek at desktop by hovering over the button on the right end of taskbar to see your desktop (great for viewing gadgets) or viewing windows (and their positions) without having to click through them.
  • Slideshow Wallpaper - You can easily select multiple wallpapers to rotate through if you like changing your wallpapers a lot.
  • Boot Screen - Not really important but it looks great.
  • Unified Taskbar (no quick links) - You can easily pin apps to the taskbar to launch them giving you extra taskbar real estate. You can also easily reorder items in the taskbar by simply dragging them to another spot.
  • Jump lists - A great way to add easily accessible functionality to apps. (eg. quickly access the last pages you visited, ie. history, in internet explorer)
  • Faster bootup - Definitely faster than Vista, will have to go back and see to get exact numbers.
  • Optimized - More optimized than Vista as far as I can tell.
  • Detecting Drivers - I was suprised that this build of Windows 7 automatically installed the radeon drivers I needed for my 4850 (which Vista didn't).
  • Customizing the taskbar - Hate the taskbar? You can easily get the taskbar to work just like XP/Vista.
  • Snipping Tool - A cool intuitive app included with Win7 that lets you easily take screenshots (lets you select which portion of the screen you want to take a screenshot of).

Probably some other things I didn't include that I thought made Windows 7 better than Vista (I think Vista is a solid OS now).

Ugh! Critics! :blink: lol. Oh well, it appears that no matter what Microsoft does, it wouldn't be good enough for some. I don't care! I can see great potential in Windows 7 as can many others. :)

yeah i agree. good attitude :D. xp was great and so was vista. why wont 7 be the same?

Windows 7 is the next "evolution" of the Windows line of operating systems. If you think change "sucks", then go ahead and prepare your arsenal to bash Windows 7 when it's released.

Vista is a pleasant change. Aesthetics, stability and usability of the whole operating system were all greatly improved. People just clammer on and complain because of driver problems (already solved) and/or Vista didn't change as radically as they thought it would have (because of all the hype).

And about system requirements... Better processors, graphic cards and the like are released VERY often and it's quite silly to complain about requirements when Windows 7 doesn't run on your computer that has a single core Intel or AMD processor and a 128MB graphics card.

i wish more people would read this. i've got friends who complain about vista, but when i show them it's abilities they were all WOAH COOL. and i was like, "yeah uh huh." silly fools...
