i agree. one thing that i think changed in vista/svr2008 is that classic seems to have big/awkward window borders compared to 2000/xp classic which i think is what turns people off mostly. and the newer start menus just dont look good in classic either

You're not meant to be running classic unless you really need the older app compatibility.

The classic theme does not determine an applications compatibility with the OS. Compatibility is based on low level changes in the OS such as the kernel.

Some old apps are barely usable without Classic...

classic is listed as an older theme under personalization no? its meant to be there if someone wants the classic look of windows

anyway, went looking and saw that aero (and classic in vista/2008/7) has border padding value of 4, which makes the borders look pretty ugly for the classic theme. reducing that value makes classic look more like xp/2003

Windows Classic is the default native visual style for Windows Server and thus won't be removed nor changed. Even on the desktop side it is meant as a fallback solution in case of problems with certain legacy apps, broken video drivers etc.

That doesn't mean you should throw your entire OS into Classic. What's wrong with the compatibility option "disable visual themes" and "disable desktop composition"?

Does anyone know what that lighthouse icon in the tray is? It's been bugging me forever.

It's called 'Windows Solution Centre' Basically when you have messages about Updates, crashes etc, it all goes into this 'Solution Centre' and the Icon notifies you of any notices and stuff and keeps a small log of what notices have been shown.

Cool, thanks. Man, I can't wait to try this out.
