Sethos
Thing is though, the PS3 is already delivering for me so my purchase wasn't using potential money. Oh, so it's delivering for you? Jeremy Kyle
Oh, so it's delivering for you? Well hot damn! We can all be happy. Right, what is your problem? Yes it's delivering for me. Why would I care if it isn't for others? I don't think the 360 is all that, but I'm not singling you or your boy wonder out for preferring it, am I? Just drop the personal vendetta, it's boring. nmesisca
I hear you, I really do.Thing is though, the PS3 is already delivering for me so my purchase wasn't using potential money. thats all well and good. Thing is though, Im discussing the low numbers and genaral low satisfaction level I hear all around, not your specific situation. I could agree with you that Sony may well deliver on the potential of the consolle, but by that time its price will be well below what it is now. Then you will start to see more people spending their money. So basically what Im saying is, if its still going to be there in about a year, its probably going to be worth the money (the ones you spend in a year time, not todays price). This of course does not take in to account the competition. DrunknMunky Veteran Posted January 6, 2009 Veteran Share Posted January 6, 2009 What I don't do is box myself into a forgone conclusion as early as some people around here do. I like to ride the fence as optimistically as I can till I know there is absolutely no chance of success, then I'll admit something has failed, a term that's thrown around very eagerly in this GH. I know, but that's why I used the term "imagine", because really that's all you can do right now when talking about the future. Nobody here knows whether Home will be a success or not until much later down the line. Even then it might have had some moderate success and fail over all. But my point is, as of today Home has gone the same way as some of the PS3 games, which were also sold on potential and hype. They can of course turn it around because it's not the same league of software, but to what degree. Home is what it is at the foundations. I know you don't quite like the comparison to the Sims and Second Life, but just look at the expansions released for the Sims. They added new locations and items. It didn't exactly change the game (yes I frickin' know Home isn't a game) or the mechanics in any great way. They only served as supplments to the "good"* game lying underneath. *I say "good" because I can't stand the Sims for more than 10 minutes these days, but obviously the games are still a success on the whole. Sethos
That's the main problem with people still holding out for Home to turn the boat, what do you expect should do that? As said a million and one times in this thread, it's the mechanics of home that's boring - Adding new areas, mini-games, tweaking, fixing and polishing Home just won't fix that. In the end you will just have a very fancy turd. There is one big difference between Home and a game though. At release, Home can afford to be lacking in it's potential somewhat, as the scope for change/update is massive. By afford I don't mean "is allowed", I mean what has happened isn't as lifeline critical unlike a game's release. Where as once a game actually releases, and is below potential, even with patches it will tend to be permanently scarred (reviews will slate it, and perception will be tainted - Home can be re-reviewed to an extent over time) and in doubt of ever reaching any potential it once had. Not to mention, buying into a game costs you money, Home doesn't cost you anything to use. Nobody here knows whether Home will be a success or not until much later down the line. Even then it might have had some moderate success and fail over all. Exactly, and I know, but that's why I used the term "imagine", because really that's all you can do right now when talking about the future This is why. Just remember your opinion is only right for yourself, not for everyone. Some people may like the mechanics of Home, others not. For a living environment in Home, you only need a few million, or even hundreds of thousands using it, you don't need to capture every single PS3 owner who buys a PS3. DrunknMunky Veteran Posted January 6, 2009 Veteran Share Posted January 6, 2009 @ Mike Well yeah that was my opinion as soon as I spent a few days with the pre-release beta. It was exciting for me at least to finally use it and see what they had created, but then you realise there really isn't much there to do or see. Now you're gonna see spikes of interest when something new is released and it quickly go back to being unused imo. Who knows, unless they change it a lot, and I mean like in comparison of the "360 dahsboard to NXE" a lot, Home is what it is for the very foreseeable future. Sethos
Yes but don't talk for "others" AB, I know even you called Home "boring" in the past but yet you quickly brush that aside and start talking about potential and the future. Now I'm talking about the future, What can Home do to make it more appealing? EVERYTHING just slightly appealing within Home right now costs money. @ MikeWell yeah that was my opinion as soon as I spent a few days with the pre-release beta. Exactly what I said a few weeks back, we're going to see those little "hype spikes" whenever something new is released and then it dies down. Adding a completely new area to Home won't make it interesting, adding new mini-games will keep you occupied for, 2 minutes? that's if you don't have to wait for someone else to be done with it, they can add ... uhmm, new clothes and furniture which costs money? They can add trophy currency which means trophy hunters will have something extra in Home, which begs the question, do you want something inside Home, really? The present AND future appeal is nowhere to be found. No idea, but it's all getting just a little silly. Don't even begin to tell me that you, or anybody here knows the truth. With regards to home, they can add game launching. That alone will make home appealing to most users. EVERYTHING just slightly appealing within Home right now costs money. Home is boring right now, I don't see why I can't admit that, but have an optimistic look for the future. I don't brush that aside, I just don't use Home right now and won't until it begins to evolve. That doesn't mean I think it's failed end of, I think my approach to optimism above will let most people know I don't tend to deal in extremes. Personally I don't know everything Sony has planned, and anything I list here is just MY perceptions of what I'd like, but Game spaces IN TIME for releases of games (somewhat useful for promotion/hype building of a games launch also) A 3D trophy room Large scale gaming events hosted Live within Home (E3/GDC/ect) More games supporting unlockable clothes/furniture that relate to the game (give trophies more of a reason to be collected) Games of more depth in Home - Things like the Red Bull air race should be quite fun to play, as opposed to playing chess Game launching universally, so club houses become useful and we can all meet and jump to and from a lined up session of 2-3 PS3 games (kind of like a hub, say how LBP online mode works) Clan integration in Home so clubhouses can maybe directly interact with certain games Some ideas, but hey, I don't get paid money to come up with content, it's Sony whom I expect to impress me, not myself. My point to you though was if you don't like the mechanics, you'll probably never like Home, but for people who do like the mechanics, they'll use Home as it gets updates. I've said this before, but it's not there to replace anything, you're not suppose to use it 24/7. Most activity probably will be seen around large events, until they get things like game launching supporting all games, and maybe then you'll see people use it more often to aid in actual PS3 game playing scenarios. However as it's not the main system running the PS3, like I said above you don't need all your user base using it, thousands/millions at any given time will keep the community "living". Jeremy Kyle
im not telling you what the truth is cause I dont know. And you dont either. But at least Im willing to listen to different scenarios. You are not. .. seriously, Game launching appealing to most users? I am more than willing to listen, I'm just sick of hearing it from the same fanb..er. people. I've not once said the PS3 is the best console on the market, and that everything it does is superb. I've simply said that for my needs, the PS3 is by far the better console for ME. I openly criticise Sony and the PS3 as I do any company/product that is deserving of it. Yes, I think when Home introduces its proper games lobbies and game launching it will get used far more often. Jeremy Kyle
Welcome to the world of technology. You buy a car, you register it, it loses a good chunk of value. REM2000
to improve home the first thing Sony have to do is police it ASAP, if your female on that game you get a lot of very bad comments and suggestions in a short amount of time. They've started doing that, and for now voice chat is also banned publicly. The moderators just appear as text bubbles in the bottom left when they speak, their actual avatars are hidden from view. Word is banning is either a suspension or a ban from PSN - They actually say PSN, so they might even be banning you from the whole of PSN, as opposed to just Home. Or it could just be Home (which is the most likely). Dunno though, I'd need to clarify that by reading through the official forums.
