Sony calls out Xbox and Wii as flea market peddlers

Okay "100m" :p I'm sure someone else said 100m and I just tagged along with it ;)

I use 20m I think it is right now. Or maybe it's 30m? Sure it's 20m. That's drilling into the walls of the house though, and luckily the room with the router is kinda directly below my bedroom.

Still the thing is, it's a pain in the ass to find a way to staple the cable all along the wall, through doors and into other rooms if you don't have a phone jack in the room your TV/console is in. You can't just drag a cable across your floor, out your door and around your house :p

Didn't know the Wii has an ethernet addon! It probably costs a bomb also.

$24.

How can you draw conclusions like that?

Wireless has nothing to do with "an average consumer". Its a means of internet access, not an individual technology. It's incorporated in multiple real world products, it's not exclusive to gaming consoles.

When you try to go online your 360 TELLS YOU, you need an ethernet cable or wireless adapter.

And please don't be too condescending on consumers, it's not as if wireless is new technology. Practically every single major IP in the UK gives your a free wireless router with your broadband connection and instructions on what it is.

Not to mention phones/PCs and everything else are connecting over wireless nowadays.

I'm sorry, but I really can't believe we're about to go and claim masses of the 360 population don't know what wireless is. Like I said earlier when I brought the Wii into this, I wonder how the 40 million casual Wii owners are getting on with their Wireless only console :/

Because apparently we know more "average consumers" than you? Most people I know with a Wii don't have it connected. At least half the people I know with a 360 don't either, even as a media extender. The PS3? I don't know anyone that owns one.

Okay your friends do this and that, and mine do that and this.

I've retired those arguments, as everyone on this board has a different view on who an "average consumer" is, then what an "average consumer" knows. Usually tipped towards favouring the argument the person is making... aka the consumer is only as dumb as you want them to appear to favour your argument. One day they don't know how to even turn on a TV, the next day they can hotwire a car.

It amounts to endless arguments, which I've now realised and do not wish to further for everyone's sanity.

It's always about "I know people who are doing it this way and that means I have a better understanding of the whole market".

Or it's like when people enter a sales argument topic and say "But my corner shop in a small town in Scotland is sold out of console x" as if that somehow applies console x is flying off the shelves everywhere.

And no I'm not calling you out for that, I've done it as well, but it's what's caused 5 or so pages of arguments.

I wouldn't mind the next Xbox using Blu-ray technology, but only if the disc-readers they use are much faster so that installs and "padding" the game discs are no longer needed. If the technology can't be used without those things, I'd rather Microsoft use a technology that can, whether old or new.

Wow, this thread really sparked during lunch , and all I had to do was type in "HD-DVD".

Anyway, I stand by what I said, I think HD-DVD would be a formidable format for Microsoft (not necessarily for us).

It's perfectly capable in terms of size, it uses the same diodes as bluray (reducing production cost) and the fact that Microsoft would be the only company producing it (just like Sony does with the UMD, go figure) would be a way of reducing piracy.

So just to make it clear, I'm not saying MS will revive a dead movie format, I'm saying they can use the HD-DVD standard and use it for the reasons I described above.

For a company that's trying to push digital distribution, including a blu-ray drive will probably be a secondary worry for them, hence my add-on reference. And we all know a console can be successful without supporting the current HD physical format (hell, the Wii doesn't even play DVD's).

You don't get to decide when an argument is retired. You started it, others may continue. You do this every time: it doesn't go your way, so you try to lock it down. The simple fact is Sony misunderstood their market. Many console purchasers not only don't care about built-in wireless, they don't even care about connectivity. They just want to put a game in and play, and they don't want to pay $400 for that. If you really feel the way you do in this post, STOP POSTING the crap you do. It invites arguments which you inevitably bow out of.

(And those 5 pages of arguments were caused by you, not me. ;) I just entered the topic.)

Anyway, I stand by what I said, I think HD-DVD would be a formidable format for Microsoft (not necessarily for us).

There in lies my argument.

The benefit of the console is to benefit us in as many ways as possible as we're the people who buy it.

Oh no, I can decide whenever I want to opt out of an argument, thank you very much GreyWolf but I don't need your permission. I'm not retiring an argument, you guys can carry it on. I'm saying I'm opting out of it. You replied to a post I made pages ago, therefore I only felt I should respectfully tell you you're not going to get another argument out of me from it.

I'll carry on posting what I do, as I feel in the majority of cases I make for good discussion - I only opt out at the stage of two opinions being clashed against each other repeatedly without any furthering of the topic. When that happens there's no where to go and it's a waste of everyone's time.

So you've got two choices, ignore my arguments, or just ignore me completely.

That's fine. You make GH hell to read. Want to discuss the Wii? There's Audioboxer telling you it sucks. Want to talk about your 360? There's Audioboxer telling you the PS3 is better. Like DVDs? Back again explaining why you don't know what you're talking about. Who needs that? Your wish is granted. I'll not see your arguments anymore.

Stick to your word and put me on ignore then. That will resolve all your worries about ever reading what I post.

If you genuinely don't want to read any of it you'll do that without publicly kicking up a fuss.

And FTR, no console I own sucks. That's an Audioboxer fact ;)

So instead, you tell me not to read posts. Typical.

What am I suppose to do?

You're whining at me as If I'm going to change my posts just for you. If you don't like what you're reading ignore it, if you think it's against the rules report it. If you want to talk with me I'll be as respectful as I can, as always. On the last page you just brought up an argument I had stopped talking about with others.

I'm not as nasty as you think, in fact, I like everyone on this board  I have no one on ignore, and I'll talk to you all ;)

I'm not whining at anyone. I'm simply telling you that you don't have your finger on the pulse of the gaming community like you think you do. It's part of debate, you know? Throwing your hands in the air and saying "I'm not discussing the topic anymore" when you aren't winning a debate does not help your argument.

Seriously can we just call it quits on this topic? Please?

Gladly. I'm just wondering why in a 15-page thread that I've only posted at the end of I get singled out as the cause of the argument.

My argument isn't set out to prove anything, I don't care if I "win" or "lose". It's not about that at all.

The part of the argument I enjoy is the discussion, presenting how I feel and seeing how others react to that. When I think the discussion has been beaten to a pulp with nothing else worthwhile to add, I try not to keep reliving it for 800 pages. At that stage I tend to know how the majority all feel.

If that means I "lost", so be it. Everyone can have their "I've won" dance :D

And if my knowledge of gaming is seen on poorly by anyone, I'm sorry, I just do the best with what I know and think, I'm learning like everyone else.

This isn't "serious business", most of the time it's a bit of fun around debating. We may seem like politicians during a heated debate, but after it's over no one takes anything to heart most of the time.

I mean we're ranting on about Wireless adapters, how much does that matter when you're away to the pub with your mates? :p

Gladly. I'm just wondering why in a 15-page thread that I've only posted at the end of I get singled out as the cause of the argument.

Uh no, you're not the single cause of any argument.

Then why when you are losing do you jump ship?

That doesn't mean you tell others to shut up about it, that means you leave the topic. your opinion isn't everyones, in the discussion or the thread. Because you are tired doesn't mean everyone else is too. Stop being hypocritical.

I already said if it's about winning and losing for you, declare me as lost. I don't care, I shared my opinion, people replied, and it got to the point where it was just rinse/repeat arguing. Not what I'm after.

GreyWolf directly replied to a comment I made pages back, I told him I wasn't going to further my discussions with him (I assume he wanted me to), therefore by all means everyone else can carry on!

THEN WHY ARE YOU STILL POSTING?!?!?!?! Do you just HAVE to be the last person to speak?

THEN WHY ARE YOU STILL POSTING?!?!?!?! Do you just HAVE to be the last person to speak?

Is it just me who find it natural to reply when someone asks me a question?

Also, do you need to be the last person who speaks?

No, I just think it is hypocritical for someone to post three times he is tired of the discussion yet continue discussing it. He does it in more than just this thread, and most of my rebuttals are not in question form.

Well, here's a great explanation from Microsoft

Microsoft: Peddling Add-Ons Works For Us

By Mike Fahey

Sony recently called out Microsoft and Nintendo for having consoles that require add-ons in order to offer the total package. Now Xbox 360 group PR manager David Dennis responds, and fires right back.

Speaking to Edge, Dennis offered his response to Sony's add-on peddling claims, much like Xbox 360 group product manager Andrew Greenberg did during CES, only a bit more pointedly now that NPD numbers have been released.

"Our strategy from the beginning was to have multiple SKUs with a very flexible offering so the customer can choose the experience that they want. If you don't need a hard drive, you're not forced to have one. If you don't need Wi-Fi, you're not forced to pay for one."

Well that certainly makes a fair amount of sense, didn't it? But adressing the issue just wasn't enough. Dennis went on to fire a shot back across Sony's bow.

"The strategy of having a console that is $200 more expensive that has features that people don't potentially need or want but have to pay for?looking at [sony's] sales numbers?I'd say it's probably not the winning strategy at this point, especially given the current economic situation."

It's beginning to look a lot like a brewing forum flame war, but I won't call it until they start including LOLcat pictures in their press alerts[/quoSource: Kotaku

microsoft are ****tarts for me when it comes to providing competition friendly options to consumers, this company was founded by person who once said " 640K will be enough " so no wonder when even now they provide insanely priced Wifi addon , proprietary hard disk which cannot be replaced by any thing available in market and its insanely priced too and they wont even allow you to install Linux OS (or even windows one) in default firmware . so what he says is PR bull****.

feel free to post snappier, oh-snap gif :D

    • I like Tidal, but it still does not control devices from the mobile/app and still no surround support. And yeah re: above comment I still get a lot of network errors and I am on a 4/4 Gbit Fiber connection.
    • Aren`t "security features" and "AI model that can see your screen" a tad diametric!
    • Samsung, Amazon extend 990 PRO 2TB NVMe SSD deal beyond Prime Day 2026 by Sayan Sen Recently, we had Amazon's Prime Day 2026 sales wherein there were several great deals including on SSDs. One of those discounted components was the Samsung 990 PRO SSD as the 2TB variant of it was selling for $370, a very good price after a long time. Although that deal was supposed to expire today, Amazon has now extended that sale further (purchase link under the specs table down below). The 990 PRO is a PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD and still one of the fastest drives available today for under $400. Speaking of fast, sequential reads and writes are rated at 7450 MB/s and 6900 MB/s, respectively. The random throughputs for reads and writes are 1400K IOPS and 1550K IOPS, respectively. The 990 PRO is based on Samsung's 7th Gen V-NAND flash, and it too is TLC. It packs 2 gigs of LPDDR4 DRAM cache, which helps the random performance. The endurance rating for this is 1200 TBW (terabytes written), which should be sufficient for most users. The Samsung 990 PRO is compatible with the PlayStation 5, but if you are going to use the 990 PRO on a PC, check out the Samsung Magician app that lets you track your drive's health, update its firmware, customize various settings, and more. The technical specs of the Samsung 990 PRO 2TB are given in the table below: Specification Value Form Factor M.2 2280 Interface PCIe Gen 4.0 x4, NVMe 2.0 NAND Flash Samsung V-NAND TLC Controller Samsung In-house Controller Cache Memory Samsung 2GB Low Power DDR4 SDRAM Sequential Read Speed Up to 7,450 MB/s Sequential Write Speed Up to 6,900 MB/s Random Read (4KB, QD32) Up to 1,400,000 IOPS Random Write (4KB, QD32) Up to 1,550,000 IOPS Random Read (4KB, QD1) Up to 22,000 IOPS Random Write (4KB, QD1) Up to 80,000 IOPS Operating Temperature 0°C to 70°C Reliability (MTBF) 1.5 Million Hours Endurance 1,200 TBW (Total Bytes Written) Get it at the link below: Samsung 990 PRO SSD 2TB NVMe SSD (MZ-V9P2T0B/AM): $369.99 (Sold and Shipped by Amazon US) Good to know This Amazon deal is U.S. specific, and not available in other regions unless specified. • Glad im on the right boat. Tidal has lots of issues in terms of app and music mix, its worst than spot but its honest. Spot algo is very tendentious and they pess less to artists, so im comfortable with the tidal errors, for now.
    • Tidal won't monetize AI slop music, company says by David Uzondu Image via Tidal Tidal has announced an AI policy aimed at protecting artists and their crafts, as AI music generation tools continue to improve both in speed and quality. According to the music streaming platform, AI-generated music will be accepted, but these tracks will be held to a "higher standard" of content integrity. Next month, the company plans to auto-identify and tag these uploads. Listeners will spot a special icon next to content that algorithms flag as 100% AI-generated starting mid-July, and the platform hopes to expand this tag to partially generated songs as detection tech improves. Any AI music that exploits an artist's voice or likeness will be taken down, and Tidal will immediately block tracks associated with fraudulent activity, which includes artificial streaming and deceptive content that interferes with real creators. And finally, music that's 100% AI-generated will not be monetized. Tidal said there is "ongoing debate" about whether certain licensed synthetic models deserve payouts, so it's possible that this part will change in the future. Streaming platforms are absolutely getting flooded with AI-generated music because of how easy it is to pump out endless tracks every minute. To give you an idea of how "bad" it is, Deezer alone reported that synthetic uploads now make up about 44% of its daily intake, which translates to roughly 75,000 automated tracks hitting its servers every single day. Interestingly, Deezer found most people cannot tell the difference between human and machine creations, with an Ipsos study revealing that 97% of listeners failed to spot the AI-generated tracks. Spotify's CEO recently pushed back against listeners who call AI music "slop," urging people to stop using the term and instead embrace the creative potential of AI music. The Swedish platform partnered with Universal Music Group to test "legal and controlled" generative AI tools that let subscribers remix songs with AI.
