Ad free subscriber group to be implemented

By modifying a website's code soley to remove ads you are stealing, and thus a pirate.

But you're not stealing anything. You're just blocking the display of ads. I have Neowin whitelisted, so I took it off to test. I loaded the main forum page, and there were no ads. I checked the code, and the ad code is still there. There's no modification of the code iteself going on, the adblocking plugin I have just doesn't display ads. They're still there.

Just a query which I need clarification on.

I assume the ads on neowin only make money when clicked, right?

So, if I know that I am the type of person who never ever clicks on online adverts, then whats stopping me from blocking them?

Neowin would make no money from me either way. So is it down to Neowin policy?

By the way, I'm after clarification, not an argument.

How are new subscriptions going to be handled? I have a subscription but it doesn't expire until August. If I pay for another year (at tier 2), am I going to have to wait until August until the ad-free subscription kicks in? Would there be a way to upgrade without letting the current subscription fees already paid go to waste?

Yeah, I'm wondering the same thing. I guess you would pay ?20 for a year's subscription and your current subscription would effectively be canceled.

The inline ads make us money simply by displaying.

You can see the new badges, as well as purchase the subscription here.

I don't see it. It just shows me as still being a Tier 1 subscriber... :(

At least some (if not all) of our advertisements are paid per impression rather than per click. We actually still lose some money on Subscriber2s based on the cost of the subscription versus what we would make if they didn't block ads. We are trying, however, to make it affordable to go "ad-free" and still allow our members to feel good about it.

What about a Silver badge? or even more Tier 1 to Silver and Tier 2 to Gold :p

<waits for the flame>

Awesome idea, reason why I'm not upgrading is purely a colour issue - The orange is right on the edge for me already, that squirrel droppings colour is too much for me :p

    • Too soon, I'm still not over this death!
    • Normally, I admit when a title is clickbait (unfortunately, it's become somewhat necessary in AI-dominated news sections today), but in this case, all supported versions is implied and doesn't need to be spelled out in the title. Of course, I'm covering a Patch Tuesday update but that is only available to supported Windows SKUs. All our coverage relates to supported Windows software and SKUs only unless we expressly state that it's "unsupported", "unofficial", or "third-party". I'm sorry, but supported/official SKUs don't need to be spelled out as such in every Neowin headline.
    • ALL versions or ALL SUPPORTED versions? Neowin does it again.
    • But the reality is it will work for people's needs, and they don't care about the technology that makes it. Clearly not everyone's needs, but that low end space where personal laptops were only used to type emails, watch content and browse websites, but they didn't want to do that on a small screen device. Heck, writing that out I can now see the connection and reason it'll do so well. Apple is about experience. If the experience is bad, they don't release it. Low end Windows laptop manufacturers up until this point have not taken that into consideration ever before, so slow laggy usage with brittle slimey plastic shells were common. I hope that the low end space at least creates better physical products that last a bit longer, and if Microsoft get their act together, they could also have a solid OS on such low end hardware that would actually make the experience work for what the hardware was intended for. The fact that the CPU is a "cellphone", sorry mobile phone processor is irrelevant. It's about the experience, and so far, that sounds quite solid.
