Windows 7 Build 7100 RC (Changes/Bugs/Tweaks) Discussion

What about my Firefox installation? Is there an easy way to back-up my profile so all of the extensions and themes I have are still in tact as well as my bookmarks and all of their tags? The bookmarks and tags are vital and I can't lose them.
Download and install FEBE extension for Firefox. It will do a comprehensive backup of everything in a few seconds and it's free.

It's easier still with MozBackup

I use this all the time for backing up all my Firefox and Thunderbird stuff ... very handy!!

I tried FEBE some time back, but I didn't find it very intuitive at all .. of course it might have improved since then ..

I have another bug since I installed windows 7 for the first time a long time ago. Please anyone check this for me.

I think it is a rendering problem and could be an Intel driver related issue, so you need to have gma x3100.

1. Install the zune software

2. Listen to your music and do anything BUT LEAVE THE ZUNE SOFTWARE MAXIMZED IN THE BACKGROUND

It could need some time to get the bug and you can'make any screenshot of it, because it will show a correct rendering, but I made a similar picture - a block covers my icons - and a video

One small icon GUI errorr I have come across so far...

I was just going to post about this again. :)

This has ben happening all the time. It only happens over .exe files. I have submitted feedback on this previously on beta 7000 and yet it still doesn't seem to have been fixed!

Intel haven't released a proper driver for Windows 7 yet, most older cards below 950 series don't have proper driver support, you install XP drivers but it is buggy and will give you graphic errors, I know this because on my dads laptop he has gma950 and intel don't have win7 drivers and in games the graphics blink and missing textures.

Intel might release a driver due to RC being released on 5th May because most companies will have to work together especially Intel, Nvidia, ATI etc.

What do I change in cversion.ini so that I can uprgrade to 7100 from 7068?

To upgrade from beta you need to:

- Extract the .iso contents to a storage location you wish to run the upgrade from (a bootable flash drive

or a directory on any partition on the machine running the old build).

- Browse to the sources directory.

- Open the file cversion.ini in a text editor like Notepad.

- Modify the MinClient build number to a value lower than the down-level build. For example, change 7100 to 7000.

- Save the file in place with the same name.

- Run setup.exe like you would normally and the version check will be bypassed.

I actually like it. It's as pompous as national anthems. :D

It is a little bit too long (the final drum beats should conclude before the menu items pop up, not right after they pop up).

It's just a tiny bit too Eurovision!

Ahhh , I see what people are refering to now ... as you say, only seems to happen for .exe files ..

Build 7100 is the worst so far for me. I had 2 blue-screen, once while changing my DVD-ROM drive letter and the second one while trying to save a file to a network drive. All in the span of 10 mins!!

I never had any problem with build 7077.

I just timed my boot and it took around 2 minutes from initial BIOS output to usable desktop. Only took maybe 15-20 seconds to get through the BIOS (to the point of "Windows is loading" or whatever).

Any way to monitor your bootup sequence and check what exactly is causing your computer to take so long to boot up? I just installed Windows 7 yesterday and have all my main programs installed on it. One thing I noticed is I didnt need to install any drivers except my video card, does windows 7 already have all my up-to-date chipset drivers or could that be a reason my boot is so slow? 1:30 on a fresh install is pretty slow, slower than Vista even (it takes about as long to boot as my Vista partition does, and that has been installed for over a year).

Several restarts and a couple of days and your boot time will be reduced.

I just tested for you.. it worked perfectly.

Plugged xbox360 controller in.. automaticly downloaded the drivers.. ready to use... unplugged it out without getting a BSOD.

Yes this has been fixed in 7100! :D

Yes, you can backup your entire profile. Go to the start menu and type %appdata% into the search box, hit enter. Simply make a backup copy of the Mozilla folder. When you install Firefox again, replace the existing version (if there is one) with the backup. Simple as that. Great way to sync your settings, customizations, and addons across multiple computers.

Firefox creates a new profile when installed on a freshly installed OS and that profile name is different. The only thing I backup are the contents of the .default folder within the profile folder:

C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\5c2ck6gu.default. Take the contents of that and replace it with the ones in the new .default that firefox created.

I am going to give MozBackup a try since it backups Songbird as well - thanks for the tip.

Jerky HD video playback with Media Player Classic from the https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?act=announce&f=12&id=11 Codec pack and also VLC on Windows 7 RC x64.

WTF, never seen this before when I was using Vista x64 or XP.

Anybody noticing this?

    • Microsoft kills AI-powered history search feature in Edge by Usama Jawad In June 2025, Microsoft began rolling out AI-powered history search functionality with Edge 138. The idea was simple: allow customers to use natural language phrases and synonyms to find their desired history items rather than matching keywords exactly. Although the company had already rolled out this capability in a phased manner, it has now decided to cancel it. In an update on its Microsoft 365 Roadmap, Microsoft has announced that it has decided not to move forward with AI-powered history search. The company has not detailed the exact reasoning behind this move, but it has apologized to customers for the inconvenience. The move is rather interesting as it seemingly could have improved user productivity. Edge users wouldn't have to worry about typos or exact keywords, and just focus on what they were trying to locate in their browser history. Microsoft had also assured users that an on-device AI model would be leveraged for this functionality, and no data would be sent to the cloud. IT admins also had the ability to control its availability through the EdgeHistoryAISearchEnabled policy. When the feature began rolling out last year, many of our readers called it creepy, noting that they couldn't trust Microsoft to keep their data on their device. Others also questioned its usefulness, saying that it's simply a way for Microsoft to insert more AI bloat into its products. Although the Redmond tech giant had stated that it will be more mindful about surfacing Copilot features in Windows 11 apps, we later discussed how this is mostly a rebranding exercise rather than an actual axing of AI functionalities. Indeed, a Microsoft executive later emphasized how they want to reshape Windows for the agentic AI era. That said, it does seem like at least AI-powered Edge history search isn't a part of that vision.

    • Not likely, of course, that we will see routine citizenship checks as they only involve compliance with existing federal voting laws already on the books for decades. This seems a non-issue entirely. Only fools would have the government rush headlong into an AI program few can understand or predict, or even debug...
