MikeChipshop Member Posted January 26, 2010 Member Share Posted January 26, 2010 I see it flash up quickly but i don't block ads so it soon goes... the reason i don't block ads? Cognitive therapy, teach your brain to filter them out, i don't even notice them any more, not even the ba***ard flashing ones. Petvas
I don't see why I would enable ads for neowin.net. If you guys want money for supporting this site, then I suggest you start offering features that would make more people subscribe. At the moment I do not see what is the value a subscription would give me. I find the idea of this text that you put awful... Petvas
How ignorant! I'll refrain from stereotyping you. I have nothing against paying for something that is worth it and I have considered many times to subscribe to neowin, but everytime I look at the list of features you are offering to subscribers I just can't do it! I am paying a lot of other sites who do offer more value, so I resent your comment Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/869100-aww-poor-neowin/page/3/#findComment-592158490 Share on other sites

One offsets what a typical member would make for us (as an active reader) and is in fact cheaper than what the return would be. I'm all ears with constructive criticism, we offer a service here and it simply costs money to do that, its basic economics. Edit: Our subscriptions are basically the same as Ars Technica.. aside from offering PDF documents of all of our content. We don't believe in forcing people to pay for "star interviews" so that wouldn't be done anyway. Digitalx
How ignorant! I'll refrain from stereotyping you. It is impartial true really, if subscriptions had more to offer or benefits worth more then the benefit of all then I'm somewhat sure more money is to be made then couple of cents from ad revenue. Technically speaking too I'm not trying to cause a problem but prompting people to display/whitelist ads is technically asking them to click on them which is against googles adsense TOU... andy2004
this is nothing against neowin and where possible i do try and whitelist some ads but about a year ago i got a nasty virus from a website running ads and there was a malicious exploit using images to infect computers through adverts. Since then ive blocked all websites from showing ads. A website should not rely on ads for revenue, it should offer its readers value and features then people will want to subscribe. Im not being funny but what advantages does subscribing have ? when people are struggling to afford basic living costs in this economic reset then people will have a hard time justifying to themselves to spend money on a website. Maybe a feature article might help ? Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/869100-aww-poor-neowin/page/3/#findComment-592158522 Share on other sites

I subscribed to show my appreciation for what neowin is doing and because they have an excellent community. Ryoken
How ignorant! I'll refrain from stereotyping you. I'll come to his aid.. It's not that it's hard to find out, as the link in your signature and on the top of the site shows lol. That being said I had to decide that I wanted to find out, which from a marketing standpoint is wrong. I would suggest adding your own advertisements into the loop, showing the benefits of being a subscriber. Maybe while your having issues with the advertisements properly loading, replace that image with one giving a run down of what you get from being a Tier 1 or 2 subscriber. You could also start offering live blogs from big events with live commenting (subscribers only), plus weekly newsletters only for subscribers. A podcast wouldnt be a bad idea also... I would really pay for that and I think a fair price would be about 25$ a year Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/869100-aww-poor-neowin/page/3/#findComment-592158548 Share on other sites

Maybe a feature article might help ? This is probably the simplest way to put it. As for last bit about struggling, that's pot I'm in. I subscribed once which should cover the cost of all the ads I'll never click as they're irrelevant, I've contributed. Subscribers generally get access to stuff like the Atlas test on our development server, we're also quicker to poll Subscribers on stuff we want to change here too. It isnt about the 10$, it is about paying for sth that makes sense. I have for example many times donated to XDA Developers, because they are doing sth exceptionally good... ChazEG
may i make a suggestion? Change the graphic to an animated GIF, with a 100% transparent 1st frame with a delay of about 750ms, then the 2nd frame as current is. turn off looping. That way it doesnt pop up until after (hopefully) the ad has loaded on the top unless you are blocking the ad Job Done! Yeah I can understand that, I have done the same because of the mods etc I've downloaded there.. but we can't really be compared to XDA developers, because basically we deliver news and (the tools for) a community.
