Android Wear could be re-branded as Wear OS soon

A new Google Play Services beta build suggests that Android Wear will go under the moniker Wear OS. The re-brand comes just months after Google merged Android Pay and Google Wallet into Google Pay.
The notification shows the new Wear OS brand name and the new logo.

A recent beta release of Google Play Services suggests that Android Wear might be renamed to Wear OS in future. The brand name shake-up was also accompanied by a new logo. The move seems to make sense as Android Wear, is actually platform agnostic and is compatible with iOS; the new name better reflects this,

The Reddit user H3x0n, also known as Fabian Terhorst, decided to de-compile the Google Play Services beta APK and found several strings which further point to a brand rename.

In the Reddit thread, Terhorst said that he believes we could see the re-brand as soon as the next version of Google Play Services rolls out.

Google’s payment software, Google Pay, is the most recent app to be re-branded. Prior to the name change, it was called Android Pay. With two applications moving away from the Android brand name, it could mean we’ll see other bits of software drop the brand too.
