Today, Apple has officially opened its first physical store in the city of Kyoto in Japan. The brick and mortar shop is located along Shijō Dori street, the city's main shopping hub.
Apple announced the opening of the store a few days ago and said the architecture is inspired by local design and materials. The building has multiple levels, with the upper floors enveloped by a translucent covering which takes its inspiration from the Japanese lanterns, Apple said. The upper facade also uses lightweight timber frame and special paper, inspired by Japan's traditional houses.
At the center of the building sits a multi-level atrium, where Apple is also offering free Today at Apple sessions across photography, music, coding, and more as part of the celebration of the opening day.
Apple noted that its first brick and mortar store outside the U.S. was launched in Tokyo in 2003. Earlier this year, the tech giant opened a new retail store in Tokyo's Shinjuku district.
The Cupertino-based company said the opening of its first physical store in Kyoto is part of Apple's efforts to make major retail investments in the country, with plans to open more stores and renovate existing buildings in the future. Apple's Kyoto store will house more than 100 employees originating from across the world.
