Copilot in OneNote just became a lot more useful

Microsoft upgrades OneNote Copilot to understand tables, images, and tags for richer context and smarter responses.

Microsoft has been slowly, but surely, integrating Copilot into OneNote functionalities and workflows. The arrival of the AI assistant was first announced back in April 2023, and since then, the company has been incrementally enhancing its capabilities. Of course, this isn't the only area that Redmond has been focusing on, as the note-taking application has been receiving other features quite frequently too. Now, Microsoft has revealed another Copilot enhancement for OneNote.

Previously, Copilot in OneNote could reason and respond primarily using your plaintext content as context. However, people using the application also store daya in several other formats like tables, images, and tags. To cater to this rich content, Microsoft is improving Copilot in OneNote so that it can understand content present in various formats.

This will enable users to interact with Copilot in a more natural, conversational manner, rather than figuring out ways to give context or reframing it in some other way. The good news is that OneNote customers don't need to do anything special to trigger this improvement either. This is a server-side change rolling out to specific versions of OneNote (more on that later), which means that you can keep utilizing Copilot as you usually do, and it'll automatically contextualize its responses based on all the plain and rich content present in your current OneNote page.

There are several scenarios in which this capability can be useful. For example, if you're planning a trip and have a collection of tables, checklists, and photos stored in your OneNote page, you can simply ask Copilot to chime in if there's anything that you may have missed while working on your itinerary.

This enhancement is rolling out to OneNote on the following versions of the application, as long as you have a Microsoft 365 Copilot Basic or Premium subscription:

  • OneNote on Windows: Version 2601 (Build 19628.20128) or later.
  • OneNote on Mac and iOS: Version 16.106 (Build 26020821) or later.
