KB5072653: Microsoft outs new package to fix KB5068781 Windows 10 0x800f0922 install error

Microsoft has released a new ESU package update KB5072653 to fix KB5068781 ESU 0x800f0922 install error bug.

Windows 10 update

Last week Microsoft released November 2025 Patch Tuesday updates for Windows 11 (KB5068861, KB5067112) and Windows 10 (KB5071959, KB5068781). Aside from those, the company also released dynamic updates under KB5070186, KB5069341 for Windows 11, and KB5069340, KB5068795, KB5068790, KB5068794, and KB5068789 for Windows 10.

Interestingly, while Microsoft addressed the ESU (extended security updates) enrollment bug with the KB5071959 update, the simulataneous Patch Tuesday KB5068781 failed to install with 0x800f0922 error.

Now, Microsoft has fixed that bug too with a new "Extended Security Updates (ESU) Licensing Preparation Package" KB5072653 update. The company does not exactly define what this ESU licensing preparation package is, though from the name it is evident that this package is essential for ESU updates to proceed.

The company has shared some prerequisites for installing the update. It writes: "This Extended Security Updates (ESU) Licensing Preparation Package for Windows 10 (KB5072653). Note this preparation package must be installed after the October 2025 security update (KB5066791) is installed."

Microsoft notes that your PC will restart to successfully complete the installation of this ESU prep package. You can find the support article here on Microsoft's official website.
