Microsoft begins blocking work email access for unprepared Intune users

A new hard deadline for Intune security requirements means your work apps could fail to launch today if you haven't updated to the latest versions.

If you have tried to check your work email today, you might have been blocked from accessing it thanks to a switch flipped by Microsoft as of January 19 that enables new security requirements for the Intune mobile application management (MAM) service. The changes affect any app not running the latest SDK or Wrapper version, core Microsoft tools on Android and iOS, and the Company Portal app on Android.

Microsoft warned about this update months ago via the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, but today marks the hard deadline where businesses that have not prepared themselves will be affected. The change doesn’t just affect internal business apps secured with Intune either, it also affects core tools like Outlook, Teams, and OneDrive if users haven’t updated to the latest versions via the App Store or Play Store. Furthermore, if the Company Portal app on Android has not been updated to version 5.0.6726.0 or higher, every other managed work app on your phone could also fail to launch.

On its related Microsoft Learn page, Microsoft said:

Starting January 19, 2026, or soon after, we're making updates to improve the Intune mobile application management (MAM) service. To stay secure and run smoothly, this update will require iOS wrapped apps, iOS SDK integrated apps, and the Intune Company Portal for Android to be updated to the latest versions.

Important

If you don't update to the latest versions, users will be blocked from launching your app.

On a technical level, Microsoft says that Line-of-Business (LOB) and Custom iOS apps using the Intune App SDK must update to the new version for iOS. Apps built with XCode 16 need to use SDK V20.8.0, while those built with XCode 26 should use SDK v21.1.0. For apps that rely on the wrapper, you must use v20.8.1 of the Intune App Wrapping Tool for apps built with XCode 16 and for XCode 26 apps, V21.1.0.

If you are an admin, you can check which users are at risk by visiting the Microsoft Intune admin center. Navigate to Apps > Monitor > App protection status and review the user report to see which app version and SDK version your users are currently running. By being proactive, admins can ensure users are not blocked while trying to do work from their phones.

Let us know in the comments whether your company’s IT department has been on top of this change or whether you’ve experienced app lock outs.
