In 2023, Amazon and Microsoft partnered to unveil a new method to send files to your Kindle right from the Word app. This feature allows you to transfer Word documents as fixed documents with the original formatting, margins, text layout, etc, or by turning them into fully-fledged Kindle books that let you change font size, customize the layout, etc. Unfortunately, about three years after its debut, Microsoft is discontinuing the Send to Kindle feature in Microsoft Word.
Microsoft has updated its support document (spotted by Office-Watch) with a new banner that says that the Send to Kindle feature will be killed next month:
Important: The option to Send Documents to Kindle from Microsoft Word will be retired after February 2026. After its retirement, users will no longer be able to access the feature via the Export menu. Instead, we recommend sending doc and docx files directly from this Send to Kindle site.
Microsoft explains that the feature will go six feet under in just one month, and the company will pull the plug on February 9, 2026. This applies to all platforms where you can export Word documents to Kindle, including Windows, macOS, and the web. While the feature will stop working, files that you have uploaded to your Kindle by February 9, 2026, will remain unaffected. After that, uploading Word documents to e-readers from Amazon will only be possible from the official Send to Kindle page.
While it is disappointing to see Microsoft discontinuing a useful service, it is fair to say that it has been mostly a niche feature tailored for Kindle Scribe users with their big screens and screen-writing capabilities. For everyone else, the official Send to Kindle website will do the job of sending docx files just fine.
