Microsoft is working on two new AI features for Teams. The company recently updated the Microsoft 365 Teams Roadmap with two new entries that tell us about plans to introduce automatic spoken language detection and a brand-new video recap feature for meeting recaps.
The most noticeable change for global users is the complete removal of the manual language selection tool. Teams will soon use AI to dynamically detect each speaker's language in real time. The meeting interface will then update to show live captions and transcripts in the detected language. For this feature to work, meeting organizers will first have to enable the Interpreter tool or turn on multilingual speech recognition.
Previously, participants had to manually tell the software whenever a speaker switched to a different dialect or language. If someone forgot to update the settings during a multilingual call, the text would often output complete gibberish.
Microsoft is also updating its meeting recap system to generate video highlights of meetings. The software will automatically process your recorded meetings to create a narrated video summary. Probably, this will work similarly to video recap tools in photo apps like Google Photos or iCloud Photos, but the video summaries will undoubtedly have a more serious note. The roadmap entry doesn’t show if users will have the ability to disable these video summaries, so we still don’t know if they’ll be part of every new video recap.
Microsoft is constantly working on bringing new features to Teams. Just a few days ago, we learned about the upcoming bot control system for meeting admins. Additionally, there’s a new network strength meter for determining the stability of your connection during meetings.
Both automatic spoken language detection and video recaps are coming to Microsoft Teams on Desktop and Mac in April.
