PlayStation 4 sales near 20 million but holiday season was lackluster

We’ve known for a long while that Sony’s PlayStation 4 has been selling very well, but now the company has just released some official figures to confirm that.

According to the numbers, the PlayStation 4 has sold more than 18.5 million units since the new generation of consoles launched. That’s definitely an impressive number and it also makes the PS4 the fastest selling PlayStation to date.

Of course a substantive part of those sales took place during the holiday season, which Sony defines as starting after Black Friday and ending four days into the new year. During that period Sony sold 4.1 million consoles to consumers.

The new numbers are pretty much on target, as Sony had previously announced 13.5 million consoles had sold by the end of September, albeit those weren’t explicitly sold through to consumers. It’s also interesting to note that the company doesn’t seem to have received a substantial boost during the holiday season like the Xbox did, instead moving forward at the expected 2 million sales per month rate.

However, there’s no denying that the PlayStation 4 has proven itself to be a super popular platform worldwide, and despite their recent successes it’s clear Microsoft still has a very long way to go before catching up.
