WhatsApp beta for Android gains Dark mode

The latest beta update of WhatsApp for Android has finally added a native Dark mode to the app. The feature has been under development for over a year now and WhatsApp has taken its own sweet time in rolling it out to beta testers.

If you are on the WhatsApp for Android beta channel, make sure to update the app to get the Dark mode feature. The Dark mode toggle will only show up in WhatsApp v2.20.13 beta or higher.

To enable Dark mode, open WhatsApp, go to Settings -> Chats. Under Display, you will see the Theme option from where you can switch to Dark mode. You also have the option to enable Dark mode automatically depending on the system theme or when the Battery Saver mode is enabled. The latter option is only available for devices running Android 9 or higher.

With Dark mode enabled, WhatsApp will use a dark gray background predominantly. The chat window will use green bubbles for conversations for easy readability.

If you are not on the WhatsApp beta channel, you can sideload the APK from here on your device to gain access to the feature.

For now, WhatsApp is only rolling out Dark mode for beta testers of the Android app. It is likely that a wider public rollout will happen within a few weeks.
