Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 7 unboxing and first impressions

While Lenovo's new ThinkPad X1 Carbon was announced at CES, it actually hasn't shipped until recently. After all, the Whiskey Lake vPro CPUs that it uses weren't even announced until April.

There are some changes in this year's model. There's no silver version or anything; rather, there are two kinds of black. There's the regular black one that we saw last year, and now there's a carbon fiber weave that you can see in the image above.

Lenovo also ditched the QHD Dolby Vision option that it previously had. Now, for the first time, there's a 4K UHD option in an X1 laptop, and that's the Dolby Vision one. There's still a QHD option, but without that flavor of HDR.

Lenovo was kind enough to send me two units. One is black with a Full HD display, also including a Core i7-8565U CPU, 16GB RAM, and a 512GB SSD. The other has the new carbon fiber weave, the new 4K Dolby Vision display, a Core i7-8665U (vPro) CPU, 16GB RAM, and a 1TB SSD. The lower resolution screen has better battery life and performance, while the 4K model is definitely prettier, as you'll see in the video below.

And of course, the Carbon is all about being a thin and light clamshell laptop. If it wasn't, then you'd just by an X1 Yoga. This one comes in at just 2.4 pounds. Check out the unboxing video below:
