Well, that's assuming whomever the pirate is, is stupid enough to get caught in the first place. This is why I've purchased all my music legally and ripped them all in lossless for my own personal library. However, as I said, the downloaded 256kbps AAC file from iTunes' store would be a legal copy.

Yes it would still be a legal copy, but gotten via illegal means. Why i made the money laundering example, same thing i belive

The point was that spotify streams whatever music you want. You don't have to own it (or have it in your library) and you don't have to download it.

From what I can see, iTunes match and iCloud will still mean you have to have the song in your library, and you will still have to download the song to your device before listening to it.

They are generally two totally different services, with a little bit of an overlap.

Yes I understand that they are generally two different services, but this "little bit of an overlap" is bigger than your making it out to be. Spotify recently added the ability to sync directly iPods etc so they obviously see the mobile users as a big part of their future and not just the desktop app, and as I mentioned I know a few people who are using the mobile Spotify app as a 'cloud based" storage unit for my current collection/playlists (Spotify imports your playlists..). Yes it does offer you access to almost any song, but personally I'm not interested in the latest Gaga album I'm more interested in having my >32GB collection always available on my mobile devices. The one possible pitfall as you mentioned is we haven't seen any evidence of streaming with iCloud.

According the engadget it took 30 seconds to start playing a song from the cloud, so I'll guess I'll have to wait and see if it is viable option for replacing Spotify for me - but I know the ?10/month seems a bit pricey if I can get my library mirrored by iCloud for approximately ?25/year and OS wide integration into iOS

And I doubt they'd know the difference - and the end result being the pirate would have a legal copy of a song they got from means of piracy. ;) As I said, it'd probably be easy to do it that way using a FLAC+CUE copy of a pirated album with a CD-R or virtual drive. And yes, it'd be like money laundering.

[. . .]

Microsoft and Facebook has got along pretty fine. I mean bing is there and various cloud apps such as documents etc. I am guessing thats why maybe apple isnt allowed to integrate facebook? (maybe Microsoft made a deal or something?)

[. . .]

That might be the case, but I doubt it because there are strong rumours that Facebook are integrating Spotify into their service, and Spotify is a major rival of Microsoft's Zune Pass service.

Yes you, however most people probably won't choose a phone purely based on Facebook integration. The fact that Microsoft actually launched and sells Windows Phone 7 without supporting the spoken language of that particular country is a much bigger turn off and doesn't exactly do much to improve their image. In that case I'd rather have a phone that supports Dutch than tighter Facebook integration.

Of course many people might go for language capabilities of the phone over Facebook integration, but I'm talking about those who can use their native language with both operating systems. Also, many people like you can speak English very well and might not be as bothered as you are about language support over social network integration that they may deem quite important.

Wasn't that 30 seconds to start downloading? Not to start playing?

As far as I can see, it doesn't stream, so has to download first.

As I mentioned earlier, because of that the iPod app will be updated to allow better management of music on the device.

And I doubt they'd know the difference. ;) As I said, it'd probably be easy to do it that way using a FLAC+CUE copy of a pirated album with a CD-R or virtual drive.

You can trick iTunes into thinking you inserted a real CD by using Toast to mount an image for example.

And I doubt they'd know the difference. ;) As I said, it'd probably be easy to do it that way using a FLAC+CUE copy of a pirated album with a CD-R or virtual drive.

With the way the courts are i wouldnt count on it. They could just use the proof they have, coupled with the iTunes Sync records and use that as proof. Courts would buy it depending on the judge

Technically you dont even need to do that, go to a Wifi coffie shop, DL it from there, and when you get home, Sync to the iTunes Cloud. No real need to go through all those steps, just use a diffrent IP/location

From the updated iTunes 10.3 page.

Automatically download new music, app, and book purchases to all your devices. Or download only the stuff you want to just the devices you want.* It?s all part of iTunes 10.3.
*Automatic downloads and downloading of purchase history available in beta now and require iOS 4.3.1 on iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (GSM model), iPod touch (3rd and 4th generation), iPad, or iPad 2, or a Mac or PC with iTunes 10.3. Previous purchases may be unavailable if they are no longer in the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBookstore. Music features are available only in the U.S.

iCloud has been pushed to devices. Go to settings > Store and you'll have options to automatically download your app/book purchases to your device (and music if your in the US by the looks of it)

Thanks for the heads up. Still waiting on the iTunes 10.3 download link to go live.

edit: LOLing at all of the crap apps I've downloaded in the past on my iPod touch (mostly to get free minutes in TextFree and points in Skout).

edit2: is anyone else (in the US of course) able to see their previous song purchases on their device yet?

Of course many people might go for language capabilities of the phone over Facebook integration, but I'm talking about those who can use their native language with both operating systems. While I don't care about the interface not supporting Dutch, I do care about things like spelling and auto-correction since I don't speak English to my friends and family. Beyond that most people around here have set their phones to Dutch entirely not English, simply because the latter isn't their native language. Microsoft really screwed up in this area, especially because their reputation wasn't that good to begin with due to Windows Mobile 6.x.

You can easily do the same using a FLAC+CUE copy with Daemon Tools. You could do it with MP3s too by converting them to wave then creating a cuesheet.

Daemon Tools isn't available for Mac OS X.

Wow I am gobsmacked by the number of Apps I must have downlaoded over the last few years which I don't currently have on my iPhone. Massive list!

Same here, although some are apps that my wife had on her iPhone a couple of years ago (we used the same iTunes account for both).

    • How does it compare to the "SeeStar S30 Pro" and the "Vespera PRO 2"?
    • Indeed. And note that those units are MUCH cheaper than this new Steam Machine...ahem.
