What are your biggest Windows 10 bugbears?

Recommended Posts

Probably a bug, not a bugbear, but.....

After a shutdown or wake from sleep the microphone on my Creative X7 (external USB DAC/AMP) automatically activates the microphone. The first time this happened it really creeped me out, I thought I might have a "listener"-type of high jacker virus. I thought maybe it had to do with Cortana and turned her off. It still happens.

As for regular type bugbears, I really dislike the settings for my desktop (wallpaper especially) automatically applied to all my other computers. I know I can turn it off but it seems to randomly reactivate right now.

They removed the option (without a hack) to put different wallpaper on different monitors. On Windows 8.1 you could right click an image in the wallpaper section and select Monitor 1, 2, 3 or 4 ... Now it's just picture for all monitors. That's annoying.

Oh man, that would be nice to have back! I have one monitor vertical and one horizontal.... needless to say...having two different images would be great!

My irritation with windows 10 is with cortana and when my wife uses her laptop in the same room as mine. If I speak to cortana my wifes laptop's cortana goes off and searches for what I wanted to search for as well.

Yeah, you have to tell Cortana to respond best to you...

My biggest gripe so far is the movies & tv app doesn't remember where i left off watching a movie! Another has to do with the live tiles on mail... they showed 33 unread emails, but there were none.. Give it some more time..

Trying to get a start menu layout that I like. After the re-install a lot of the old junk which used to take up space is now gone (which is good), but now the start menu looks weird. I'm sure I'll get there with some more tinkering.

I also wish there was some way of improving the styling of some of the tiles - particularly Win32 apps like Chrome/Steam etc. It looks weird to have them all with the same background colour and the icons in the middle are too small.

I only have a couple to be honest that I have come across so far, Live tiles are not neither live nor accurate... I cant get the weather tile to show a location other than London, which is only a few hundred miles away from my current location. But my biggest irritation is my ELAN Touchpad (Synaptics) not allowing for two finger scrolling. It is really becoming an annoyance now, but hopefully drivers will be updated in due course.

What about you, what things have you come across that annoy you. Now I'm not talking about failed installs or error codes, those are bugs not bugbears. :)

lol i second that mate! I've removed it totally and end up looking out the window :p i've set my city etc but it still defaults to London (i'm half joking about the window, that's the scary part LOL)

my synaptics allows 2 finger action, but i reinstalled the Lenovo driver for mine, so it should come for you soon i hope :)

Thats it for me, which now I think about it, thats nothing short of amazing really, does this mean they've actually succeeded........../scratches chin in disbelief! Nah that's just not possible from MS :)

+Chorepak google for Dual monitor tools free tool which allows what you seek, works fine in 10. I use it myself over 3 monitors with different res and aspect ratio. (1 x 27 & 2x22.1s) Think stripped down display fusion. I just use the dual wallpaper tool (its cool it sees all monitors I use it on a 5 monitor setup @work)

Wasted space? You mean the "commonly used applications" is "wasted space"?

Why are you wasting space with all of those tiles while complaining about space that is useful? Those should all be on your commonly used list, not pasted on normal sized tiles.

Because the commonly used apps list is limited to a single list of a few items also it changes. I just want to be able to put shortcuts there not have it be dynamic.

My irritation with windows 10 is with cortana and when my wife uses her laptop in the same room as mine. If I speak to cortana my wifes laptop's cortana goes off and searches for what I wanted to search for as well.

LOL that could get VERY nasty :)

Oh man, that would be nice to have back! I have one monitor vertical and one horizontal.... needless to say...having two different images would be great!

Why would they remove that feature? I don't really understand that, sorta boogles the mind.

Ejecting a USB stick causes the Action Centre icon to light up in the system tray. Yet when you click on it, there's no notification.

Game DVR working with... hardly anything thanks to not supporting full-screen games.

That's about it I think. Overall I'm happy with it.

Let's see....

Hibernation battery drain on my Lenovo y510p.

"Telemetrics" sent to Microsoft without clear Opt-in.

UI designed by blind people and to make it worse completely inconsistent(fonts, colours, lines...you name it) in style and in function.

UI wastes so much space filling it with the worst colour for work possible (excluding luminescent and flourescent ones :)...white.

Start Menu is just resized Start Screen from Windows 8, compared to old start menus and replacement like StartIsBack nearly obsolete.

Edge is in pre-alpha state on RTM Windows.

Completely non-functional much touted Cortana...if I wanted Bing results I would search through Bing...that is if You are in USA, if not Cortana suddenly becomes competely useless.

Slower than Windows 7.x or Windows 8.x in opening programs.

Terrible release for Microsoft, could not come at worse time with Windows Phone factually dead, Google manuvering into Office space, Mac moving to PC territory and Linux through Valve's SteamOS and Vulkan (as DirectX 12 multiplatform alternative based partially on Mantle) moving to gaming territory.

Action Center
Is rubbish.  It doesn't show me when I have new email or anything like a mobile phone does so I don't really see the point in it right now.

Apps or Programs?
I'm a bit confused as there is a settings "app" I presume, but then there's the good old Control Panel too - so why have both?  It confuses me as to where I need to look.
Another example is the media players.  So there's Groove Music, but then there's WIndows Media player, so which am I supposed to use?

Start Menu
Is fast becoming obsolete.  I left the large search bar up and now just search for whatever I want rather than clicking through a bunch of menus.  Not sure if this is a good thing or not.

Mail App
Is useless, as others have said.  It can't find any emails, despite there being emails.  Don't really want to re-install Outlook/Windows Live Mail so I'll wait for a few weeks to see what happens with that.

Unable to Remove Apps
I don't want them on my system but can't delete them.... Weather, Maps, Film & TV, X-Box, OneNote, Camera...

Sorting Music by "Date Created" shunts folders to the back
How annoying!  In Windows 7 I used to occasionally arrange my music by Date Created so I could listen to the recent additions quickly.  However doing that now moves all the folders in "My Music" (name back from XP days :p) to the last position so I have to scroll through all the music to find them.

GOOD THINGS:

While I was annoyed at the "no confirmation for deleting files" thing, it's now becoming one less click so would save a few seconds of my life over the year.

I mostly like Windows 10. These things should be considered pet peeves. A little annoying, but no huge deal.

  • Calendar app doesn't sync all my Google Calendars. For some reason it randomly picks and chooses a couple to sync.
  • When I press the calculator shortcut button on my keyboard (I use it a lot), the app opens in the background instead of in front and with focus. Windows 7 did this just fine.
  • I think it's stupid that file delete confirmation is turned off by default, but I think Win8 did this also.
  • I don't like that I can't open "all programs" as a folder in Explorer. It used to be my go-to way to clean up the start menu.
  • I don't know how I can stop my mouse getting "stuck" in a corner when I move it across multiple screens. I get why they did that, and it will make sense to the majority of users, but I'm used to dragging my mouse across multiple screens uninterrupted for over 15 years now.
  • I wish I could make the titlebar color black. It looks quite nice in Edge. Why not make it an option for all applications?
  • Privacy settings are a bit obtuse. I wish they explained in more detail what they exactly collect and how they use it.
  • I'm not one of those conspiracy nuts, but I feel it should be more clear to users what they're agreeing to when they choose express settings during install.

That said, greatest Windows version to date. I bet it will be even better in a year or so.

GOOD THINGS:

While I was annoyed at the "no confirmation for deleting files" thing, it's now becoming one less click so would save a few seconds of my life over the year.

The action center is not only for email and calendar notifications. It replaces the text bubble pop-up on the bottom right, and keeps the messages stored until you marked them as read.

If you press the Windows key or click on the start menu button and start typing, you also perform a search.

You can change the delete confirmation setting by right clicking on the trash can and going into options.

Connecting and disconnecting to a VPN is now a process of opening the network flyout, clicking the VPN - which opens the Settings App where you AGAIN have to click the right VPN from the list. and THEN you can connect or disconnect.

Zero information beyond "connected" in the network flyout. No IP-info, internet connectivity etc.

Tablet mode leaves a lot to be desired compared to Windows 8.1:

  • No touch gestures to navigate back and forward in Edge
  • "All apps view" is still a tiny vertical list leaving the rest of your Start menu wasted while you look for that one app you cant remember the exact name of but you know it was something starting with T or whatever.
  • Open file explorer, navigate to a video file, double tap it to open. Close video player when done. You are now back on the start screen and have to swap to file explorer. Why doesn't it just go back to the last open app?

Searching for "feedback" to find the windows feedback app yields no results because the name is "windows feedback" and apparently this is too much for Cortana, which I might add is not available in my region.

And that brings me to my last one: If I want Cortana I need to set my region to a supported one, which also changes the region of the Market and makes me unable to buy apps (at least last I tried on my Windows Phone so I'm guessing this is still true). Cortana has some "region locked" features like traffic info and so on, but why lock everyone out of the basic math interpreter, reminders and so on.

If your laptop doesn't have GPS, it grabs your location from your IP address, which is usually in the location where your ISP's main routers are hooked into the rest of the internet.

Not the most accurate way to do it.

This is why Google collects and stores wifi locations in a big database when they drive around with their Streetview cars. That way they can determine location on Android pretty accurately without having to use GPS.

They removed the option (without a hack) to put different wallpaper on different monitors. On Windows 8.1 you could right click an image in the wallpaper section and select Monitor 1, 2, 3 or 4 ... Now it's just picture for all monitors. That's annoying.

Except that you can, in the order of your monitors, ctrl-click multiple images and set as wallpaper.  There is also this that you can run:

control /name Microsoft.Personalization /page pageWallpaper

settings & control panel - enough said.

It is still there for backwards compatibility. At the moment it is not possible to extend the Settings app. This is coming though and once it does it means third-parties will be able to migrate their control panel extensions to Settings.

While the OS hasn't crash, I've encounter so many bugs and this is on the Surface Pro 3.

Here are the main ones:

1. Windows boot into the wrong screen orientation. I have to engage orientation lock and release orientation lock for Windows to set the right orientation. (If I was using the Type Cover, I have to remove that too)

2. When resuming Windows, I get prompt for password even I told it not to prompt me for password.

3. Surface Pen always launch mobile OneNote even though I set the OneNote button to launch desktop OneNote 2013

4. 10% of the times, the Surface boots into Windows with Wi-Fi off and the only way to fix it is to reboot.

5. When in tablet mode, some desktop apps launch into the background instead if the foreground and I have to use Task View to switch to it.

6. Voice Recorder can't run in the background and can't run when the screen is lock. WTF?

Oh, another thing that's annoying.

Windows keeps giving me notifications on installing language packs. I get like 5 of them every day and my notification center get completely filled up with them.

Probably something device-specific, as this only happens on one PC I haven't done a clean install on.

That's pretty bad, especially since you're using an official MS device.

3. Does Windows also open mobile OneNote when you open a file?

My Surface Pro 3 seems to remember my screen orientation just fine. But it does suffer from always wanting me to enter my credentials whenever it has been hibernating. The upgrade also broke the power settings so it now goes into hibernate much quicker than before event while connected to power.

And then there's the fact that it sometimes takes 10 seconds from I press the power button untill the Surface logo even appears on screen. And then sometimes up to 20 seconds before it even shows the rolling dots loading animation. When I want to pick up my SP3 to quickly look up something, I don't want to wait almost one full minute before I can even start typing a search.

I used to have huge problems with the Wifi falling out randomly requiring me to go in and out of airplane mode to fix it (like every 10 minutes for 1 hour at a time), but this has not happened once since I upgraded to Win 10.

These things might be very SP3 specific, but since Win 8.1 didn't make it behave this way, I'm sure it's something to do with Win10

    • Windoze 11 could finally go to hell, instead of making me savor yet another error I've never had. "Bad Pool Caller" or whatever TF cryptic crap0la message it is. Adding salt to injury, it says something along these lines (on the blank black screen after it hard stops): "Your windoze needs to restart. You can restart." NO WAY SHERLOCK. The PEECEE, look, it's *blocked*, I can do jack sh1t with it as it is and you say that it needs to restart? Further, that I can restart? What am I supposed to do, take a herbal bath? Sudo a sandwich? Timewaster pile of useless slop and errors, coded by monkeys and force-fed on us by a pedo-founded corporation, that's all there is to it. Now, let's have a fun weekend trying to handle the error, which after a quick internet check can basically be due to EVERYTHING, from memory faults to drivers to motherboard issues. Thanks M$.

It emphasizes privacy by blocking trackers, ads, and ensuring your data isn't collected. With Zen Mods, users can enhance their browser experience with various customization options, including features like split views and vertical tabs. The browser is designed for efficiency, providing fast browsing speeds and a lightweight interface. Zen Browser prioritizes user control over the browsing experience, offering a minimal yet powerful alternative to traditional web browsers while keeping your online activity private. Zen Browser’s DRM limitation Zen Browser currently lacks support for DRM-protected content, meaning streaming services like Netflix and HBO Max are inaccessible. This is due to the absence of a Widevine license, which requires significant costs and is financially unfeasible for the developer. Additionally, applying for this license would require Zen to be part of a larger company, similar to Mozilla or Brave. Therefore, DRM-protected media won't be supported in Zen Browser for the foreseeable future.
