What are your biggest Windows 10 bugbears?

All of the wasted space on the left hand side of the Start menu despite having most used and recently installed applications turned on. I'd love for it to display more than 6 most used.

Some of these have been covered:

  • Windows Defender turning itself back on
  • Laptop resuming from sleep, live tiles are dead - restarting Windows Shell Experience Host fixes it
  • Arsing about turning off mail notifications on every single pc, remember those settings...
  • Start menu layout not syncing across devices. At least add an option to allow this like in Win8.
  • OneDrive - placeholders. Although did work out that Groove will play your music without having the music folder synced. Painful to setup though.

found a new bugbear last night, why oh why do we need the all programs menu listed under Letters, im sure we are all literate to know that list is alphabetical.

what a waste of space the Letter headings are! If they removed them you would see so much more without scrolling!

My boot times in 10 are faster than they were in 7, even on the same hardware both laptop and desktop boot in sub 6 seconds, its shaved at least 4 seconds off my boot times (woo!) which in real terms is a 40% speed improvement. :)

Think outside the box for a moment if you will.  You can filter by clicking or tapping on those letters, and have zero need to scroll a huge list.

Windows Defender can be disabled via policies:
gpedit.msc - Computer configuration - Administrative templates - Windows components - Windows Defender - enable "Turn off Windows Defender".

I agree, I'd rather have the ability to jump even if I occasionally have to scroll more.

They could have implemented it in a similar manner to the phone. Only show the letter options once the app list has > n items in it. Would be cool if they enabled that and made n configurable.

Upgrade to 10 pro last night.  I only have a few annoyances.

1) I was uninstalling a bunch of software so kept getting UAC prompts with the stupid alert sound that plays way too long
2) I got errors installing updates, did a check for updates and nothing was there.
3) My ethernet was not connecting properly, ended up with 3 different screens about my connection that either did nothing or told me nothing.
4) As mentioned by others.. settings and control panel... I much prefer control panel
5) So much wasted space.  I had the application page open in settings and it was truncating application names even though it had more than enough room to expand.
6) A lot of UI glitches.  ie) If I open the Get Office app (which I have 365 so why it's there I don't know) all buttons at the top (Min, Max, close) turn red.

I am sure there are more but that's just what I have found so far.

The new start menu is rubbish. Removal of the ability to right click icons and select "pin to taskbar" in particular annoyed me. I went to StartIsBack pretty quickly. The fact that the spyware style telemetry is still on is also questionable to say the least, I don't really want the contents of my files sent to Microsoft. Thankfully both relatively easy to remedy.

Launching edge without addon support was also questionable. The browser has potential, but sadly any speed gains acquired through the engine modifications get lost thanks to advertising. Once it gets adblocking capability I think it has the potential to be a great browser.

ummmm i just rightclick in the start menu on an ico and live tile and guess what is there.... Pin to taskbar

Does anyone use netplwiz to sign in a machine ?

I notice how slow it is compared to 8.1

i used netplwin to auto sign into my machine as im a single user and my machine is on the desktop from start to finnish in 12seconds, its faster than windows8.1

Apps that stop working: https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1267852-windows-10-mail-app-stopped-working/ and the fact that there isn't a single article on the internet with a fix for non windows 10 beta builds...

In windows 8.1 I could atleast remove an app and reinstall it :/

Oh and not to forget the crappy app store that consists 99% of apps that steal your info or are just actual malware...

In windows 8.1 I could atleast remove an app and reinstall it :/

I had to force a refresh on the mail client with the following in powershell:
Get-AppxPackage  | Where name -match windowscommunicationsapps | foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

I had to force a refresh on the mail client with the following in powershell:

Powershell now shows "Deployment operation progress initialized" and keeps showing that :/

Solved my issue after a reboot, thank you SO MUCH :D

Here are mine so far:

  • No Start Screen. The maximized Start Menu doesn't count, as it doesn't function like the Start Screen in Windows 8.
  • The Ctrl key can not be used to select multiple items in the Start Menu.
  • App list in Start Menu uses the old vertical view, making it harder find programs.
  • Some Modern apps look like crap in windowed mode.
  • Colourless titlebars. (Unofficial fix)
  • Some options in the Settings app are unnecessarily greyed out.
  • Only one instance of the Settings app can be opened.
  • Limited control of Windows Updates, even in Pro edition.

Aside from these issues, Windows 10 seems decent.

1) Arranging tiles in start menu can be difficult sometimes, especially using my touchpad for some reason - very difficult to drop them where I want

2) I can pin items from Start menu to taskbar but not the other way around - that's retarded having to search for an app in the start menu to pin it when it might be staring me right in the face from the taskbar

3) Multi-monitor support is still buggy - doesn't always remember screen layout after resuming from sleep (even though the last cumulative update from yesterday might have improved that - will see how things go today)

4) Mail app is absolute garbage - unbelievable that they would release such crap app for so commonly used feature

5) Settings app needs tons of improvements - why the hell do I need to go to display settings then go to "advanced settings" to change my display resolution - makes no sense to me

Etc...

    • Windows 11 version 26H2 is now available for testing in the latest preview build by Taras Buria Friday Windows 11 preview builds are here. Insiders in the Experimental (formerly Dev) and Beta Channel can download builds 26300.8697 and 26220.8690. There are no new features, but Microsoft is officially moving the Experimental Channel to version 26H2. In addition, Microsoft is improving the copy dialog in File Explorer, the Start menu reliability, and fixing virtualization issues. Here is the changelog: [General] With today’s build, Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel will see the versioning updated under Settings > System > About (and winver) to version 26H2. For more information, see the Windows Insiders blog. [File Explorer] We’ve improved the visual consistency and reliability of the Copy dialog in Dark mode, including its launch experience and the expanded progress view. [Start menu] - Also available in Beta Improved reliability of Start menu reflecting newly installed or removed apps without requiring sign-out or restart. [Taskbar] Fixed an issue for Insiders using the new smaller taskbar option, where the system tray might get cut off or pushed off screen. [Settings] - Also available in Beta Improved reliability of Settings > Apps > Startup. [Virtualization] - Also available in Beta This update addresses an issue that could result in bugchecks citing HYPERVISOR_ERROR (0x20001) and KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (0x1E) errors after installing the latest flights on some devices during system restarts, virtual machine operations, or while running some gaming applications. You can find the official changelog for the Experimental build here and for the Beta build here.
    • I've always preferred this possibility. There is something that feels good about the idea that all matter in the universe will eventually come back together and maybe even result in another big bang. The idea that the universe would fizzle out over the eons and forever drift apart is a little depressing. I realize it is not logical to let a basic human desire for life to have a grand everlasting meaning change the way I feel about a scientific theory, but I am human, so that is how I feel :-).
    • Windoze 11 could finally go to hell, instead of making me savor yet another error I've never had. "Bad Pool Caller" or whatever TF cryptic crap0la message it is. Adding salt to injury, it says something along these lines (on the blank black screen after it hard stops): "Your windoze needs to restart. You can restart." NO WAY SHERLOCK. The PEECEE, look, it's *blocked*, I can do jack sh1t with it as it is and you say that it needs to restart? Further, that I can restart? What am I supposed to do, take a herbal bath? Sudo a sandwich? Timewaster pile of useless slop and errors, coded by monkeys and force-fed on us by a pedo-founded corporation, that's all there is to it. Now, let's have a fun weekend trying to handle the error, which after a quick internet check can basically be due to EVERYTHING, from memory faults to drivers to motherboard issues. Thanks M$.
    • Zen Browser 1.21.3b by Razvan Serea Zen Browser is a privacy-focused, open-source web browser built on Mozilla Firefox, offering users a secure and customizable browsing experience. It emphasizes privacy by blocking trackers, ads, and ensuring your data isn't collected. With Zen Mods, users can enhance their browser experience with various customization options, including features like split views and vertical tabs. The browser is designed for efficiency, providing fast browsing speeds and a lightweight interface. Zen Browser prioritizes user control over the browsing experience, offering a minimal yet powerful alternative to traditional web browsers while keeping your online activity private. Zen Browser’s DRM limitation Zen Browser currently lacks support for DRM-protected content, meaning streaming services like Netflix and HBO Max are inaccessible. This is due to the absence of a Widevine license, which requires significant costs and is financially unfeasible for the developer. Additionally, applying for this license would require Zen to be part of a larger company, similar to Mozilla or Brave. Therefore, DRM-protected media won't be supported in Zen Browser for the foreseeable future. Zen Browser offers features that improve user experience, privacy, and customization: Privacy-Focused: Blocks trackers and minimizes data collection. Automatic Updates: Keeps the browser updated with security patches. Zen Mods: Customizable themes and layouts. Workspaces: Organize tabs into different workspaces. Compact Mode: Maximizes screen space by minimizing UI elements. Zen Glance: Quick website previews. Split Views: View multiple tabs in the same window. Sidebar: Access bookmarks and tools quickly. Vertical Tabs: Manage tabs vertically. Container Tabs: Separate browsing sessions. Fast Profile Switcher: Switch between profiles easily. Tab Folders: Organize tabs into folders. Customizable UI: Personalize browser interface. Security Features: Inherits Firefox’s robust security. Fast Performance: Lightweight and optimized for speed. Zen Mods Customization: Deep customization with mods. Quick Access: Easy access to favorite websites. Open Source: Built on Mozilla Firefox with community collaboration. Community-Driven: Active development and feedback from users. GitHub Repository: Contribute and review the source code. Zen Browser 1.21.3b changelog: New Features Updated to Firefox 152.0.1 Fixes Fixed transparency not working after updating to 1.21.2b (#14259) Fixed frequent crashes affecting users with Intel Raptor Lake processors Fixed an issue on macOS where choosing a PDF option, such as "Save as PDF", from the system print dialog would send the job to your printer instead of saving a file.
