I haven't seen the newest episode yet but since we are at war people tend to be on edge.

I liked how this episode explained the ring design without talking about it. Netflix has spoiled me with releasing whole series, I want to binge on it but i cant.

I just watched Ep4, and I'm enjoying it for the most part. One thing is really grating however... the Klingons. Yeah, their prosthetics are ridiculous, as is their garb. I can sort of ignore that. But the one thing that is really annoying me is the fact that they speak in Subtitles! OK, we get it, they're aliens, they don't speak English. But if I'm forced to read the damn subtitles then you might as well do away with half the special effects budget for the Klingon scenes as I am unable to look at them. Seriously, stop it, or at least give us a pure English audio track to choose from.

 

I can't be the only one who is really frustrated by this?

I kinda agree. I'm still missing bits if I forget who's on screen and have to skip back, but I'm hoping that'll be resolved.

When they mention that the klingons have to give up everything, it might mean the virus that transforms them into the klingons we all know and love, and hopefully makes them speak english too!

It's certainly been overdone, I'd say copying from The Americans who have had the Ruski speak for five damn seasons!

I thought the security chief was a bit "gung-ho" in ep4  it's definitely a darker take on Trek, it isn't awful, but I still have to get used to it.. the whole 'ship jumping anywhere in space' doesn't fit in any proper Trek timeline does it?

 

Oh yeah and how many looks have the klingons had now? If it's a bridge between TOS and TNG, then OK..

Agreed. Definitely a waste of a character, it goes against pretty much everything a Security Officer would actually do

Unfortunately, the action itself does not speak highly of the officer's IQ, which begs the question, how someone with the lack of obvious reasoning ended up being a security chief of the most important ship in the fleet and in the wartime, no less? It was weak writing with most likely a simple purpose of freeing the top captain's advisor spot for Burnham.

I think that's cos it airs on TV also, they did the same with Better Call Saul.

I'd never thought of it that way.  I watch a lot of subtitled movies and I find that I take them in subconsciously - not actively reading them, but rather "following" them - but then again, that's often with languages I speak (French, German, etc - not Klingon).

 

You make quite an interesting point.  I have no issue with subtitles, but your comment that they move visual focus away from the visual action is quite valid.  Nice

The Klingon speak is partly annoying in that you need to actively pay attention, which actually isn't a bad thing, but you can't "background watch". but it's good in that like all those special effects, it adds immersion.

And Klingons speaking English would be immersive? They would be as immersive as Germans in Wonder Woman

I actually normally watch stuff with the subtitles on, because my hearing isn't the best (too much loud music as a kid) and it allows me to understand the dialog if it's not completely clear (if I miss something I can quickly look at the subs and understand). But that's as an aid to following the dialog rather than being forced to read them.

The Klingon speech breaks immersion for me. Something is immersive if you feel like you're really there. I've never had someone speak and their words appear floating in the air before them in real life.

Well, not going to analyze it to much myself.  Doing so will make me not like the show.

Captain seems like someone who keeps people he trusts close, and perhaps she earned his trust in some of the darker matters.

 

But yes, such a rash action doesn't feel in-keeping with the character and was simply a facile plot device.

I'm sure it was a plot device, no doubt, but the action, when people, even smart people, are pushed to show results or else, then caution is often tossed out the window.  It happens in real life, let alone fictional works.  She made it pretty clear that if the captain doesn't need you then you're out and I doubt she wanted to get tossed out.

they also don't always speak your language.

I disagree it felt more like Star Trek, the lack of concern for the creature from so many felt anything but!
