[Official] Star Trek: Discovery Thread

Recommended Posts

I'd say this is more and better trek than any of the previous shows.

it has everything trek had, but adds more than episode of the week, with same story different destination. and it has more realistic crew interactions and a more engaging dynamic.

the end of this episode was a bit of a rollercoaster though.

Spoiler

I mean, first, ok he's the Lorca that tried to kill the empress, he's a good guy  .... and no.... he's apparently at least as bad as she is...

be interesting to see where they take it from here.

Excellent writing and acting n this show. Assuming they kill off MU Lorca or at the very least he stays in MU, who will be the captain of Discovery moving forward? Not sure I can see the Kelpian in command.

I can't wait to see how the show wraps up this storyline. I mean, I hope they make it home and don't drag the MU stuff until next season. Still, I wonder how much Tyler is going to be a part of the show going forward for S2 and if Saru can be stretched out for more than one season etc.

Every time I see Michelle Yeoh, i just get more and more infatuated with that woman. I would turn to the empire for her. I wouldn't even care that she's 55 and 12 years older then me.  :) Awesome show tonight.

Apparently?

Spoiler

Now what do they do with Mirror Emperor? I doubt she'd wanna stay in our universe (though she might who knows) and I doubt even more she'd ever join the Federation lol. I see her going out in a blaze of glory against the Klingons I guess, maybe sacrificing herself (again?) for Michael?

And I wonder if Tyler will have any role in stopping the war or he's just gonna be PTSD man for awhile now. I mean, he had Voq in his head right? Or is he Voq and Tyler was in his head? I'm still confused on that one :|

Wow, they actually finished part of the arc, without dragging it out... that's rather impressive in todays TV.

however...

Spoiler

I suspect the arc may not be as finished as we think. the green spore, infection?

and they probably need to do some spore drive time travel to fix things, which may land them at least temporarily back in MU.m I don't see how they're going to rebuild the federation from a broken band of rebels and defeat the Klingons without patented ST time travel... not sure how I feel about that. While Deus Ex time travel is a staple of Trek. it's one of the worst, right behind Q... which is the other worst solution to fixing this problem. I like this show, but if they even mention Q, I will instantly stop the episode and never watch it again... I doubt they'd do that though, They seem to have abandoned that Deus Ex in all the newer shows and movies.

But it'll be interesting to see how they solve it. maybe the writers have a none time travel deus ex trick up their sleeves... though I don't see it being possible.

I do feel like the MU and time travel arcs are a bit of a cop out - and btw so overused in Star Trek-verse (whichever one or more of those it is) - but at least we are back to a familiar enemy.

Unlike other MU episodes though, we actually got a lot of backstory and more to the empire than just an "evil mirror". I wouldn't mind a season or two, was a little disappointed they left so soon, I was actually really pulling for the emperor and I saw a lot of story line potentials. Time travel is a bit of annoying, but at least it doesn't look like we're pressing the big reset button, and instead they're having to deal with the 9 months they were gone and finding a solution.

Yay... Back to the Space Orcs...

OMG! Me and Rippleman agree on something! That was easily in my top 5 episodes of any Star Trek.

The last couple episodes all told were much better than I was expecting. I was glad they (hopefully) resolved the Klingon crud because it felt horribly out of place in the MU wrapping. I find they are trying to have too many plots going on at once when really each episode or arc should be focused on dealing with the main issue. The MU arc was literally jam packed with subplots and the Klingon one was just unnecessary in my mind.

That said, it is a little weird where they left off. One of my pet peeves about a lot of modern television is that a return to normalcy doesn't seem to ever happen. It's just one problem immediately after the other. And that's how I feel about this last episode. They come back... and oh no! Whole new problem without any time to recoup or anything!

Spoiler

Instead of returning 9 months later with a completely devastated Federation, they could have returned and had 1 month with a significant map change. Right now it just feels like they may as well be in another alternate universe where the Klingons won.

Instead we miss out on MU Philippa having to acclimate herself to the Federation (which would be an interesting plot in and of itself as we've already seen the end result of what one person does). But I also find bringing her back is a cop out. We lose Philippa and we get Lorca. Then we lose Lorca and we get Philippa back again... why?

One of the things that was great about Star Trek was the mix of good ol' exploration and diplomacy among the higher stakes warfare. The low points made the high points seem all that much more important and pronounced. With constant twists, turns and universe-shattering problems it's going to wear on you quick. How many times can Discovery save the universe? They just saved the universe by destroying the MU spore reactor but now they have to save the entire Federation from defeat by the Klingons.

Remember, the Federation isn't a military. And with Lorca the writers had a sort of easy time writing them to be closer to that. I really want to see more episodes like the beacon planet. That was the closest they've gotten to Trek.

Suffice to say I am enjoying this more, but I do miss the more mundane day-to-day format of the originals. Mostly because I have enough television series that try and wow me with their complexly woven plots, twists and drama. Star Trek doesn't really have to be that.

To quote the opening of Star Trek Into Darkness "it's all starting to feel quiet episodic"

Wasn't that Beyond?

I liked the episode, though as it was pre-mirror universe trip - the Klingon arc needs to end badly. Its just a weak storyline right now. If they do something amazing next week, then awesome. Otherwise just let Ash sacrifice himself for Michael and let's move on. Also, MU Michelle Yeoh ....something bad is gonna happen with her I can see it coming. I bet Michael is gonna have to mutiny against her again and wind up killing her, herself. :|

So, what's the thoughts on that season finale?

I thought it was incredibly well done, and had some interesting plot stuff I didn't expect. Not sure how I see things fitting into the canon of Trek still, but its only the first season right? Some of the stories from the season ended, well. Others ended with a "what might that mean for the future?" kinda thing. Also, that "cliffhanger" at the end, was a nice tease for S2 :D

I'll wait to discuss in more detail because the episode just finished and I know most people haven't seen it yet or are watching it now etc.

I thought the finale was the weakest episode of the season. Very rushed and a lot didn't make any sense. They more than made up for it though with the Enterprise showing up as a cliffhanger. It was sending a level one distress call though, so something ain't right!

I can say I was let down by the season finale, but maybe just because it was so extreme the last 5 episodes. Big questions at the end of this one for me. Look forward to when it returns.
