One thing I refuse to do with this show is  to compare it to TOS - I just don't think it helps in any way.

Oh I'm not comparing the show to TOS, but I just can't help comparing the character...

I'd rather they have stayed away from time travel stories, especially the Groundhog day episodes.  Still, it was a reasonable take on it at least!

Really not liking what they've done to Harry Mudd though...

Grpundhog day was lame and stupid already before the movie was out(granted I may be the only person in the universe who don't like it). But it is a Trek trope... I didn't hate this one though. I may have preferred something else, but I enjoyed this episode anyway.

Pretty much how I felt.  I don't really like that type of story line, but at least this one was interesting, and even had some character development.

I'm playing catchup at the second and I've just started episode 6. I think I missed something between 5 and 6 though, how were they able to do a jump in episode 6 when they let the tardigrade go? The only way they were able to jump at the end of the previous episode was by Stamets nearly killing himself. Or have they changed the way a warp jump looks like and now ships always "drop" in to the destination?

EDIT: Nevermind, having just finished episode 7 I think I got the gaps filled in.

No you didn't miss anything - Stamets is literally the cruise control for the Spore drive at this point. Without him and his cyber arm implants - the Discovery would be going along at miserably slow Warp speeds. My guess is eventually, Stamets will have to be replaced due to the obvious mental and physical issues being put upon him now. Whether that means permanent damage to his phyche and especially to his relationshp with the Doctor, one can only venture a guess now.

I really hope they don't kill him off, or remake him into some sort of "new" character due to the personality changes etc. Plus there is the mirror universe stuff, which is always fun to speculate about. Heh, :D

So that "fall finale" was pretty damn good. The heavy handed mirror universe hint drops are just, so heavy handed at this point lol

Not sure where they are going with Tyler now, since its obvious one of the theories about him isn't gonna go that way. Also, Discovery is the first Trek TV show to have cursing in it, and now its the first to have nudity. What the, we didn't need to see Klingon boobs. Seriously.

Didn't they specifically state it didn't ...

Yeah well, JJ stated specifically that Into Darkness wasn't going to have Khan in it, let alone a literaly remake of Wrath of Khan. Who knows what they have planned at this point. I think its cool anything could be possible.

I'm really struggling to care about STD.  I'm a huge Trek fan, but this just isn't Trek for me.  It's too dark, the characters are completely unlikable, they break Roddenberry's golden rule of the crew getting along with each other...  It's just not what Trek is meant to be.

The only remotely interesting character is Lorca, and I'm pretty sure he's a nutbar...

So apparently CBS (I think) put out some sort of time lapse trailer thingy for Discovery's return tomorrow night. And it shows the first scene from the new episode (that's what it appears to be anyways) and it CLEARLY spoils what's going on. So I'd avoid seeing that trailer or reading up on what happens in the scene showed until the episode airs Sunday night. Don't hover over the spoiler box obviously posted below here.

Spoiler

They are clearly in the mirror universe, they come across a Vulcan ship, but it instantly opens fire on the Discovery (cuz Terran Alliance etc) and well, there ya go.

So, anyone watch it yet? All I'll say is - HOLY ###### THAT WAS AWESOME. :D

That was TRULY Star Trek, we finally got what we wanted (more or less) from the show imo. All around great episode with terrific pacing and character moments. Can't wait to see things going forward after this one.

Also:

Spoiler

Really good implementation of the Mirror Universe. I'd say it was the best MU episode by far next to the DS9 episodes (and the Enterprise two parter was ok also) and it was great to see some old favorites return once again (aka agony booth). Looking forward to next week to see them trying to fit in in the MU. Though I do wonder if they are going to show the Alt. Discovery in the Prime Universe at all.

Pretty disappointed at that

Spoiler

I don't understand the Mirror Universe fascination.  It's boring.  It's an 'easy device' to use to shake things up, and frankly it shows a lack of imagination by the writers to have to go there ever damn season of every damn show.

Everything is going as expected. :o

Spoiler

The mirror universe was always the answer to how does Discovery fit into the timeline with its fancy tech and its early discoveries of things like detecting cloaked ships. I have a feeling we're going to be stuck in the Terran Empire till at least the end of next season if not longer and they are really going to flesh it out. :D Might turn into a gritty Voyager. :p

I've been craving for some sci-fi lately, since the Expanse S02 ended, so I'll swallow anything right now.

The show is good (give credit where credit is due).

However...(I know some rotten tomatoes will be thrown my way, but when did it ever stop me from speaking, right? :D  )

They should've called the show:

Star Trek: Coming Out

Spoiler

Rapp's acting is good (especially in that temporal loop episode) and every time I see him I wish he sued the hell out of Kevin Spacey.

Yeah, funny how the new Star Trek show became really good - when they went full Star Trek....go figure huh? :)

Except they haven't.

Spoiler

Mirror Universe in TOS and other shows was interesting because you experienced the characters trying to navigate the differences without compromising their character. In STD, the characters allow themselves to fall right into the lifestyles of the characters they are trying to impersonate. This seems a significant departure to me.

Lets not forget the fact that the show dates itself with things such as the groundhog day episode and that dumb as hell party.

I also didn't like how the chief of security reacted to be confronted by the doctor. In what world would a crewmember who has otherwise been completely devoted to being a Starfleet officer would decide that murdering his chief medical officer was the solution to that?

Lastly, I'm trying to stomach the characters being a literally cookie cutter progressivism. Black lead, special needs science officer, gay chief science officer and chief medical officer. It's fine to include these themes, but they should be topics and not characters themselves. One of the things I loved about Star Trek was the characters were the "societal norm", the grounding for the average person. And that fact made the odd situations they were presented with even more interesting to see navigated.

Things like the androgynous world in TNG where someone was ostracized for wanting to identify with a gender where society had "evolved" past it. Those episodes were great because they took a topic and made it unique (in fact that topic is highly relevant today with gender identity). But STD falls short of understanding how to approach these topics and instead chose to take the most narrow-minded route and bake these topics directly into the cast.

It's just another drama show with a Star Trek coating. So far the most Trek part of this show was:

Spoiler

The beacon planet where the guy went crazy because he was so attached to not having to feel fear anymore. I really liked that arc.

Gonna keep watching in hopes it improves, but at this point it's not Star Trek at all.

Um, holy ######. I'm sorry but this show is AMAZING now lol That episode, mannnnnnnnnnn.

Spoiler

I can't believe they really did it and Lorca was from the mirror universe from the start. Also, saving Tyler was nice, but kinda feels like a cop out no?

I JUST finished and literately said "holy ######". I don't get excited about shows, but this one I completely love and loved the twists for the last 3 shows in particular.
