I think the point is the irony of things... ok... religion doesn't cause war but it is an excuse for war... and meanwhile all religions preach for peace and love and whatnot... but do they ever do what they say?

so that's one reason why religion is pointless and full of contradictions.

"Do they ever do what they say"? Does who ever do what they say? Religions? You really have to study religion and the lives of the Prophets of these religions to understand what religion is about and the peace that it preaches. Before you do that, I don't think you'd be doing right to say that religion causes war.

Of course religion can be used as an excuse for war, but it never *causes* war. ANYTHING can be used as an excuse for war, just like toothpicks can be used to hurt people. Look at the intention of religion though.

Hmmm i believe religions are fake and even god is fake. So i dont believe in any of em. I think a lot of us would agree. Plus, we "earthlings" have a lot of problems in some parts of the world like the middle east because of their f***ing affinity towards th religions and they cant get over it by think that it doesn't exist.

Dude, do you even understand the driving motivations behind anything in the middle east? Do you know its history? Have you ever read the Quran? Any religious book for that matter? Perhaps you'd want to do that before blaring nonsense in public forums.

Sorry if I'm a little rude, but that comment struck a nerve :s

I see you still haven't come back with any proof ZAnwar, I guess it's not a case of you forgetting more a case of you not being able to find any proof what so ever your God is real.

People who believe in God(s) should just stop coming to this thread until they can bring one shread of evidence showing that their god exists / their whole religion isn't a sham.

I guess saying that if anyone goes by it, there will be no more posts in this thread ;x.

If we offer you a book or two that I believe is evidence for faith in God, will you actually read them or look through them?

Even if you don't want to read the Quran, you can read Revelation, Rationality, Knowledge and Truth online. It examines the evidence of Islam from various perspectives from both a social and scientific perspective with a basis in rationality and revelation.

I've found the book to be quite amazing... if you read that, I think you'll find quite a lot of evidence that you're looking for.

look, i wanted REAL evidence.

i know if i put a search in Google, you would say, ah, these sites can say what the want, they dont have to be true.

fine then, take a look at the site http://www.geocities.com/islaminme001/bi_poag.htm

My take on this, as i think is proved by the length of this thread... is that everyone has there own opinion (beliefs?) on this topic and that means everyone will argue 'their' point. This leads to war because some people force their opinion believing so much that it is the only 'right' opinion (extremists?) until conflict arises.

My own personal belief... and I state.. i am not forcing this 'opinion' on anyone, so nobody needs to reply to me and argue against it.

My personal opinion is that religion is a form of teaching devised many years ago to instil the values of goodness within a child as they grow up and even as an adult throughout life. All religions teach what is good, moral values, care for one another, the sanctity of life etc. It's still up to people to choose to live their lives 100% according to these guidelines and therefore be good. Or for them to chose to be bad... or occasionally wander of the beaten track, so to speak.

Life is an experience and therefore there is no wrong or right way to live it, everybody's way is right for them.

Just my idea, and I admit, I could easily be wrong.

:p

Life is an experience and therefore there is no wrong or right way to live it, everybody's way is right for them.

do u really believe this? lol.

you said that it might be fine for them, but it might not really be good OVERALL.

thats like saying, you cant call a murderer a bad person, that is how he wants to live, killing people.

if everybody's ways were RIGHT for them, there would be no restrictions, no prisons, no cops.

i did not specify the type of person or define the boundaries of my argument in any way. obviously the things which are morally bad according to the masses such as murder, rape etc. are wrong. i meant everybodies lifestyle is right for them in the sense of wether they believe in god, they don't... or they sacrifice sheep and spear their innards on their loved ones genitalia before going out for pizza.

I believe I've read about the first 6 pages then the last 2. What a horrible mess this thread turned out to be. Here's my take on all of this. I find myself mostly agreeing with envision, though.

I believe that there obviously is a God and he loves me just as much as he loves anybody else. Now, as an example I'll use Christianity... Christians are open on this very topic to all, that if you don't believe in Jesus Christ you will be damned to Hell when you die. Now can anybody honestly tell me they think Ghandi went to Hell? There's something to think about. I'm sure we all could think of many other names to substitue for Gandi's. And We'd all question it's validity.

Now the thing that gets me is people are so firm on their beliefs that they'll actually mock others about theirs. For example ZAnwar did with envision.

QUOTE (envision @ Mar 17 2004, 17:05)

Life is an experience and therefore there is no wrong or right way to live it, everybody's way is right for them.?

do u really believe this? lol.

So let me ask this to others and especially to ZAnwar. Who are you to judge his views and beliefs? Are you in his shoes? Have you experienced everything he has as a person? Of course you didn't. You are simply laughing at him for no other reason than you disagree with him mainly based off the fact that you were born and raised a Muslim.

So let me ask you and everybody else this: Why do you believe you can question others beliefs based on what you've been taught and believed since you were able to understand anything? How can you judge someone for their beliefs and opinion when you know not where they come from? Such ignorance I presume.

I believe that everyone as a human has the ability within them to reach God. Whatever ways you do the latter does not matter. As long as you are content within oneself and God is all that matters. Humans weren't made to always agree with each other, that's the beauty of it! I cannot deny anyones beliefs, all I can do is read and try to understand where they are coming from.

I don't pity ZAnwar or any others for believing in Allah. I don't pity my parents for believing in Jesus. I love them both for it, for they are a step ahead! It's a matter of how they are content with them and God. I have to respect that reguardless.

The real people we should worry about are people who think religion is a waste of time, for with out it I believe we are lost. The Gospel of Thomas verse 70 has Jesus saying this:

If you bring forth what is within you, what you have will save you.  If you do not have that within you, what you do not have within you will destroy you.
We all have access to God within us, it's merely bringing it forth that saves us.

Now by no means do I "follow" Jesus, but I can always learn from him. And that's what we should be doing with each other. We shouldn't argue our beliefs, but listen as we may learn something anew.

When doyou> feel thatyour> learning is complete?

OMFG......this thread did turn out to be a genuine BASH-A-PERSON-FOR-HIS-RELIGIOUS BELIEF. mods close this.

and Zanwar, stop being so damn ignorant. open your eyes, get a clue about life. dont force ur religion on other people and say they will burn in hell forever. every1 in life deserve happiness for what they believe in, and if u cant appreciate that...then....ur hopeless

ps. CLOSE THIS THREAD

to tell u guys. when i first started this thread, i was doing a school project about how religion is a dominate problem in the world today. with 25 pages (actually first 10), i was able to do a convincing report about how it is true. thanks guys.

also...

i just dont understand why do people have to fight over a belief or faith. you guys who argue fiercely over this (COUGH Zanwar COUGH) have to stop. it's people like you wy we have a war torn earth. i am not saying religion is bad, in fact, it's the best thing that happened to me. with religion, i was able to see the world with a compassion point of view. i m able to accept and to love people more then ever. i read the bible, but i dont go around say that non-believer will go to hell and burn for all of eternity. so my point is that when we read holy writings, we have to read more into what's right and what's wrong, love is good, compassion is good, truth is good, wisdom is good. what's bad is that we take our belief to bash other people and kill them over it. and guys, any holy writing IS NOT THE INFALLABLE OWRD OF GOD. words can be changed constantly, just like the game telephone. i personnaly believe we can achieve salvation/enlightenment by just doing selfless act of love. think about it, did Ghandi went to hell and burn because he believe in human rights?.....

I believe that everyone as a human has the ability within them to reach God. Whatever ways you do the latter does not matter. As long as you are content within oneself and God is all that matters.

Being content with yourself and your Creator is a positive thing by any perspective. The issue at hand is whether or not God is content with us.

If he is a tolerant God that can be reached by many paths, as you stipulate, then yes. But if he is a holy and, dare I say, intolerant God as the "born-again" Christians state, then most assuredly not.

  • 2 weeks later...
any holy writing IS NOT THE INFALLABLE OWRD OF GOD.

really?

damn.

the bible and torah may not be 100%, but the Quran DEFINETELY is 100% true.

i dont know one christian or jew or heard of one that has memorised the whole of the torah or the bible (gospel).

i know many people who have memorised the quran. this is how it has been over centuries, that is why the validity stays. that is why the Quran has not been falsified.

I myself have a best friend who is an Arabic Muslim.. born in Rhiad, Saudi. He and I have spoken often about this very subject. I am not a religious person... i believe in myself and do not feel I need to have faith in anyone but myself, friends and loved ones. I am ok with that. He is a devout Muslim. But even he agrees that the biggest problem with the Muslim faith is the people who claim to be Muslim and seriously believe themselves to be, but who have misunderstood many aspects of the Quran and it's teachings.

Zhanwar, you say that the Quran has never been changed ever so is 100% correct. Who wrote it? I mean in the beginning, tell me who wrote it?

Also, and I know this is true.. the Quran just like the bible states that it is a guide to the path of good, not a step by step instruction manual. And, it also clearly states that to disrespect the differing views of others on faith is to directly insult Allah and you will be punished.

So your already screwed and in defiance of your faith. But, luckily for you your god is a forgiving one.

Peace and Love to all faiths, and to all those people on this board who are true to themselves. All those who are extremists with distorted views and twisted religious understandings... god rest your damned souls!

My god... me, has spoken.

you say that the Quran has never been changed ever so is 100% correct. Who wrote it? I mean in the beginning, tell me who wrote it?

the first writings were done by Prophet Muhammad's best friend, as angel Gabriel recited it to the Prophet, he then told his friend to write it down.

hey everyone

i have been silently following this mindless debate and had so far not wished to interefere. I have seen and learnt that debate on religios issues really can bring out the worst in people. Although i am a Muslim, I donot believe in condemning people to hell, for I believe that it is each individuals own experience that determines what he believes in. Ofcourse as an intelligent species it is our duty to try and find out what the truth is, and in my opinion this can only be done by learning enough about various religions, both through history AND through their religious books, ie the Bible, Quran, etc.

However today i feel compelled to point something out, not because it contradicts my beliefs, but simply becuase it is a factual error. If i let this go unchanged, then many people will take a wrong message from here.

Also, and I know this is true.. the Quran just like the bible states that it is a guide to the path of good, not a step by step instruction manual.

You see the Quran IS indeed a step by step instruction manual. It itself claims to be one. Ofcourse i can understand that if your not a muslim then you wont be following this manual, and i dont blame you for it or hold it against you. But what i AM saying is that you ARE a muslim then the Quran IS a step-by-step instructi0on manual. It provides explicit instructions on almost every facet of life. How to eat, how to sleep, how to establish relations with people, how to establish relations with other nations, politics, and the list just goes on. From birth do death, every action of your life does have specific instructions for in the Quran

All i wish to say is that envision, you are perhaps unknowingly distorting the facts here. I understand that you have an arabic muslim friend, but perhaps you yourself can see that to rely on ONE individual as a source of all information and judgement regarding an entire RELIGION and its 1.1 million followers CAN be folly.

No offence intended to anyone.

In my opinion, Everyone has a right to their own belief ofcourse, but only if this belief is founded not on ignorance, but on careful study and evaluation of the various other beliefs.

Cheers

Danish

i don't see any logic to religion at all.

But then again, i don't mind if other people do, because it gives them something to believe in, something to have faith in. I think deep down many people just want an authority figure, they don't feel entirely comfortable making their own decisions, and need to believe that there is something that is guiding them.

oh well, my belief is that jesus christ was a great magician, just like all of those that claim to be "prophets" because, nowadays, if i made the claim that i was the "messiah" i'd probably get shot on the street.

but this topic was very poorley executed, and ended up as a mindless debate like dtmunir said.

the only person that you should have faith in is yourself, and most people do, they just don't know it, i mean, if you say you "talk" to god, its just the voice in your head that gives reason.

Conclusion: Faith/God is a placebo.

edit: don't bash people for their beleifs and ignorance, just do what i do, laugh at them from afar. :)

edit2: oh oh! i forgot to add! religion is not the cause for the problems of the world (well it probably is, but still), its just the excuse people give for their actions.

i don't see any logic to religion at all.

why not?

you see more logic in something that was created miraculously, not something done by God?

how did we come here? why did we come here? explain YOUR logic. if you cant explain it, then religion wins because it has got the answers to the questions which you cant answer.

I'm tired after reading all this mess. It's quite disturbing, actually...

God is real. The Quran is a cult book - misleading people on a global scale. Jesus is real. Died for you. The Bible - flawless in it's original form. Salvation? Through Jesus. Good works? Being a good person? Not gonna get you into heaven. Why? Because our God is a just God. Sin is not allowed. Speeding on the interstate? Sin. Thinking a perverted thought? Sin. Need I go on? By the blood of Jesus you were saved, and by believing that He died for you, are you able to spend eternity in heaven. If not, then yep - you go to hell. Scary, huh? Nah - not once you are filled by the Holy Spirit...

<yawns>

Let the flames begin...he we go again!

Ok here is my point of view..

Not bashing anyone else beliefs. So if you want to flame, go ahead.

I have been raised by very believing Christian parents, but I can't really see the point of the institute that (a/the) church is. If I want to get in contact with God, I'm sure that he will listen to me with or without the presence of a 3:rd person acting as the medium/?holy link? to God.

(Almost) All the current available religions are stating that there is a superior being that directs us humans, but in different ways as described in the Holy Bible, Quran etc etc..

Every each holy book states its own truths and guidelines. Fine with me.. There is no correct religion, and that is according to me, it's all up for everyone to decide which one(religion/truth) that suits you. (Almost 100% sure that Zanwar is going to quote me he:p :p ) Anyways.. I personally believe that someone or a greater force is watching over us. "Us" being the all the living creatures that lived, live and shall live on our little planet called earth.

The whole religion thingy has become like a brand that is hosted on a piece of clothing. Everyone does his/hers own commercials for that product and tries to make other people buy the "holy stuff? that will surely guide you to heaven, paradise or whatever. The exploitation is getting very noticeable.

I choose to believe in my self and on a possible superior being, if he/she/it cares to listen to my prayers.

Either way I will go on with living my life, charted or not charted, continue doing those "bad things" I do very day and knowing that God/(or enter whatever you want here) will correct me when the time is right. Until then.. I pursue my belief, right or wrong. Who cares anyway? I'm neither hurting nor creating problems for other religions or believers of other/same Gods/Holy Books etc etc..

This topic is now closed to further replies.

Performance improvements: This update provides improved reliability, responsiveness, and visual quality across the Widget experience. [Accessibility] New! This update makes your screen easier to see and customizes your zoom experience: Screen tint: Apply a full-screen color overlay to help reduce eye strain and improve readability. Choose from preset tint options, adjust the intensity, or turn it on automatically. Find this feature in Settings > Accessibility. Magnifier: Enter a zoom percentage directly and change it in increments in the Magnifier window for more precise, flexible control. Magnifier settings menu: You can now also modify zoom increments directly from the magnifier bar instead of navigating to Windows Settings each time. [File Explorer] New! When you hover over a file in File Explorer Home, commands such as Open file location and Ask Copilot appear as quick actions. This experience is now supported for work and school accounts (Entra ID).1 Improves the speed and performance of File Explorer launch.2 Fixes an issue where the OneDrive shortcut in File Explorer stops working when File Explorer is run with administrative mode. The address bar now supports paths containing double backslashes and quotation marks (for example, C:\\Users\\user or "C:\Users\user"), improving compatibility with a wider range of inputs. The address bar suggestion dropdown is more reliable and now consistently closes after an item is selected. This update addresses an issue on File Explorer Home where OneDrive files could appear duplicated in the Favorites section. This update includes several refinements to the Rename experience: Addresses an issue where text was repeatedly selected when renaming items in folder views. Addresses an issue where case-only name changes were not immediately reflected in folder views for items stored locally or in the cloud. [Bluetooth] This update improves reliability and performance when connecting to and using Bluetooth devices: New! Windows now keeps the microphone mute state in sync between the audio mixer and the Hands-Free Profile (HFP) for a more consistent experience with Bluetooth headphones with mute buttons or indicators. Accessory compatibility workarounds: Improves compatibility with specific Bluetooth audio devices, helping AirPods appear faster in pairing mode and improving microphone reliability on Beats Studio Pro headphones. Improves Bluetooth reliability for voice calls when using Classic Audio devices with the Hands-Free Profile (HFP). Reduces time for LE Audio accessories to start playing audio while using the microphone. Device management: Windows will no longer show a “Remove failed” message when attempting to remove Bluetooth devices if the Bluetooth radio is unavailable or has changed since pairing. Settings experience: Improves stability when using the Bluetooth & devices settings page for a smoother, more consistent experience. Connection reliability and responsiveness: Reduces the time it takes for classic Bluetooth audio devices to reconnect after Windows resumes from hibernation. Improves reliability when LE Audio accessories disconnect, such as when another device (for example, a phone) connects. Improves reliability of LE Audio streaming after a connection is lost and restored. [Bluetooth and Phone Link] This update improves audio routing for calls made through a connected phone: When an outgoing call is dialed from a paired phone, audio remains on the phone while ringing and transfers to the PC only when the call is answered from the PC. When Do Not Disturb is enabled on Windows, incoming call audio from a paired phone no longer rings on the PC. [Voice access and voice typing] New! You can now use voice access and voice typing in French, German, and Spanish. As you speak, your PC improves your text in real time. It corrects grammar, punctuation, and recognition errors, and helps improve clarity—even in the presence of background noise. This makes dictation smoother and reduces the need for manual edits.3 [Audio] This update improves the reliability of the inbox HD Audio driver. [Networking] This update includes networking improvements for virtualized environments. Confidential Virtual Machines (CVMs) now use SR-IOV hardware acceleration by default for improved network throughput, and a configuration issue in nested Hyper-V virtualization network setup has been corrected to ensure reliable VM network provisioning. This update improves the reliability of the Windows networking stack. It reduces bug checks (blue screen errors) related to Wi-Fi power and improves cellular (WWAN) connectivity, including support for IPv6 VPNs. Compatibility with third-party VPN software and SR-IOV configurations on server hardware is also improved. Network adapter settings and bindings are now preserved across OS upgrades. [Printing] New! New printer installations use Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) by default when supported, simplifying setup and improving reliability. For details about third-party driver deprecation, see End of Servicing Plan for Third-Party Printer Drivers on Windows. To control this behavior, use the toggle in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Default install printers using Windows Ready Print. For more information, see Introducing Windows Ready Print and modernized driver selection. For more information, see Introducing Windows Ready Print and Modernized Driver Selection. [Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)] The update improves usage of WSL in mirrored networking mode with VPNs. [Display and graphics] Improves the reliability of rendering content while scrolling for certain apps spanning across multiple monitors. Improves the reliability and persistence of applying color profiles. [Location services] This update changes how some location settings are displayed in Settings > Privacy & Security > Location to help with clarity. When location services are turned off, settings like Default location and Allow location override don't immediately apply, since location information is not given to apps or services. These settings will now be greyed out when location services are off to reduce confusion over when they take effect. [Search] This update improves the reliability of setting Search related group policies. [Input] New! You can now customize the size of the right-click zone in Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad. Choose from default, small, medium, or large to control how much of the bottom-right corner responds to a single-finger right-click. This setting is only available on touchpads with a pressable surface. If your device manufacturer provides customization through their own app, a Custom option will appear to reflect those settings. This update improves recognition of English characters when using Japanese handwriting. [General performance] Improves the time to shut down Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) when you turn off your PC. [General Reliability] This update improves the reliability of explorer.exe. It addresses issues on the login and lock screens related to third-party credential providers, reduces the probability of taskbar icons appearing as blank gray placeholders, and improves navigation to Home in File Explorer during OneDrive sync. It also improves explorer.exe reliability when switching between desktops, enhances app launch with shell extensions, and using acrylic blur effects in the Start menu, Settings, and the lock screen. [Apps] Resolves an issue where some installers and applications could show unexpected elevation (UAC) prompts after installing KB5089549. [Remote Desktop] This update refreshes the dialog design when you enable Remote Desktop in Settings > System > Remote Desktop. [Graphics Kernel] Improves memory-management policy that allows PCs with more than 32GB of installed memory to run larger local AI models. Up next we have the features under normal rollout: [Secure Boot] With this update, Windows quality updates include additional high confidence device targeting data, increasing coverage of devices eligible to automatically receive new Secure Boot certificates. Devices receive the new certificates only after demonstrating sufficient successful update signals, maintaining a controlled and phased rollout. [Authentication] This update improves Netlogon secure channel connections between domain controllers, enabling successful connections from member servers to domain controllers set up before 2025. [Emoji Panel Update] The emoji panel (Windows key + period (.)) now uses GIPHY for GIF content following the deprecation of Google’s Tenor API. Starting June 30, 2026, install the latest Windows update to continue using GIFs in the Emoji panel. If you don’t update, you will see a "GIF service is not available" error in the panel. Installing the latest Windows update will restore access to GIFs. [Networking] This update improves how your device connects to shared network resources. Connections used by apps and system features, such as the NetUseAdd function, now work more reliably, including unauthenticated (null session) connections. [Recycle Bin (known issue)] Fixed: This update addresses an issue where the confirmation dialog might display an internal Recycle Bin file name instead of the original file name when permanently deleting a file. This issue might occur after installing the June 2026 security update (KB5094126). [Taskbar] This update improves notification badge display across your apps. Notification counts and badge visuals now update correctly, helping you stay up to date with new activity. You can choose to manually download the update from Microsoft's update catalog website at this link.
    • Hands-on with BOOX Tappy: cute little reading accessory by Taras Buria Page turners are quite popular accessories for e-readers, as they enable a hands-free reading experience, which is particularly useful with large readers featuring 10-inch or larger displays. The BOOX Tappy is a new accessory that was introduced earlier this year, and we took this cute-looking thingy for a spin. The Tappy comes in a small box, with two additional buttons and a user manual. The device is made of glossy green plastic and resembles old appliances from the nuclear age. Material quality is great, and each part feels quite premium. Plastic is high-quality, the switch is nice to flick, and the buttons are not rattly. At the bottom, four rubberized feet prevent slipping when used on a desk. Unfortunately, there are no color options, and the Tappy is only available in green. It looks good, but I wish there were other options as well. There are two removable buttons, an on/off switch, and an LED indicator that displays connection mode, charging status, and more. The buttons resemble those of an old typewriter, with quite a long travel distance and a pleasant clack. In the box, you have four buttons with different icons: heart, coffee, O, and X. You can easily swap buttons by simply pulling them upwards. Tip: buttons come with plastic covers, but they are quite tricky to remove. It is hard to call the Tappy the most ergonomic remote control, but after fiddling with it for a few hours, I managed to find a comfortable hand position. Attaching a lanyard to it can make it more comfortable in use without the fear of dropping it, but unfortunately, the Tappy does not come with one. The Tappy connects via Bluetooth 5.2, and it works in three modes, which you can toggle by pressing and holding both buttons for about five seconds: Reading Mode Multimedia Mode Browsing Mode Next / Previous page Next / Previous Track Up / Down scroll If you pair the Tappy with a BOOX device (I tested it with the BOOX Go 10.5 Gen 2 Lumi), you will get small pop-ups indicating the current mode. Plus, you can customize what each button does when pressed one time, two times, or held for a few seconds. The list of available actions and features you can use is massive, and I like that BOOX lets you map stuff like brightness adjustment, app launching, screenshot-taking, screen rotating, navigation, and more. Note, however, that while you can use the Tappy with other readers, its customization is only available on BOOX devices running firmware version 4.2 and newer. I could not connect the Tappy to my computer (Windows 11 claims a driver error when I try), but it worked with the DuRoBo Krono that I recently reviewed. My Kindle Paperwhite refused to work with the Tappy, though, just like my iPhone. The Tappy uses a non-removable Li-Ion battery, which can be recharged with a Type-C cable. BOOX rates the remote for "weeks of use," and I can say that it indeed has very good battery life. While there are no battery indicators on the remote, you can see the current level in the status bar or in Input settings in the BOOX firmware. After a few days of active use, mine still shows about 95%. Overall, the Tappy left a nice impression. It is well-made, and the integration with BOOX devices is great. I also like that BOOX decided to have some fun with its design and swappable buttons. I cannot say I am a fan of its odd shape, though. Still, I managed to find a way to use it comfortably. And when not in use, it just looks neat sitting on the table doing nothing or serving you as a small clacky fidget. • Passkeys: Think of them like a broken heart necklace. Imagine one of those heart necklaces that breaks into two matching pieces. One person keeps one half, and the other person keeps the other half. With passkeys, the website has one half, and you have the other half. If the website gets hacked and someone steals its half, that stolen piece is useless by itself. It cannot unlock your account without your matching half. This particular heart necklace is one of a kind, there is only one in existence. Your half of the necklace has to be stored somewhere. It might be stored on your phone, tablet, computer, security key, or a password manager that can sync it between all your devices. A security key is a small physical device that you keep with you, kind of like a house key, car key, or flash drive. I would not usually recommend a security key as the first option for the average person. For most people, it is easier to use their phone, computer, or a password manager that can sync passkeys between their devices. A security key is more like a spare key you keep in a safe place, just in case you lose access to your other devices or your password manager. Some security keys plug into your computer. Some plug into your phone or tablet. Some get tapped against your device. The idea is simple: a security key can hold another passkey for the same website. Think of it like creating a second one-of-a-kind heart necklace for the same account. One necklace could be paired with your password manager, while another necklace could be paired with your security key. That means the website has more than one matching half on file. One half matches the passkey in your password manager. Another half matches the passkey stored on your security key. So, if you lose access to your phone, computer, or password manager, you would still be able to log in using the passkey stored on your security key. Think of it like keeping an extra special necklace piece on a tiny keychain, stored somewhere safe. The website still has the matching half for that security key, but your half is safely stored inside the little key. A passkey does not automatically exist on every device you own. It lives wherever you save it. If your half is stored on one device, then that device is the one that has the matching piece. For example, if you create the passkey on your Windows computer and it is only saved to that computer, your iPhone does not automatically have that same half. If you create it on your iPhone and it only stays on that iPhone, your Android phone does not automatically have it either. That is where password managers come in. A password manager can act like a protected jewelry box for your passkeys. Instead of your half of the necklace being locked to only one device, the password manager can securely sync that half to your other approved devices. For example, Apple Passwords and iCloud Keychain can sync passkeys between your Apple devices. Google Password Manager can sync passkeys with your Google account. But password managers such as 1Password and Bitwarden can sync passkeys between everything, your phones, tablets and computers. Now, you might ask: “What happens if I lose access to the device that has my passkey?” That depends on where your passkey was saved and what recovery options the website gives you. If your passkey was synced through a password manager, you may be able to sign in from another device that has access to that same password manager. For example, if your passkey is saved in iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager, 1Password, or Bitwarden, another approved device may still have access to it. If your passkey was saved only on one phone, computer, or security key, and you lose that device, then you may not have your half of the necklace anymore. In that case, you would usually need to use the website’s backup login or account recovery options. A lot of websites that support passkeys still let you fall back to your regular password. So if you lose access to your passkey, the site may still let you log in with your password, a code sent to your email, a text message, a recovery code, or some other account recovery process. That is convenient, but it is also important to understand: if the website still allows password login, then your password still matters. Passkeys are safer than passwords, but if your account still has a password as a backup, you should still use a strong, unique password and turn on two-factor authentication if the website offers it. This is why it is a good idea to have more than one safe way back into important accounts. For example, you might keep your passkey in a syncing password manager, add a second trusted device, save recovery codes somewhere safe, or set up a backup security key. A passkey is very secure, but just like a real key, you need a backup plan in case you lose access to it. Now, you might ask: “What stops a hacker from copying my half of the necklace?” That’s the important part: your half is protected. It is not something you type in, and it is not something the website gets to keep. Think of your half as being locked inside a tiny safe on your phone, computer, security key, or password manager. That safe only opens when you approve it with your fingerprint, face, PIN, or device password. When you log in, the website does not need to see your half. It only needs proof that your half matches its half. Your actual half is not handed over to the website. This is different from a password. With a password, you type the secret into the website. If you type it into a fake website, the hacker now has it. With a passkey, you are not typing your secret into the website. Your device is proving you have the matching half without giving the half away. That also helps protect you from fake websites. If someone makes a fake login page that looks like the real site, your device can tell it is not the real match. It will not use your passkey there. Now, could someone use your passkey if they stole your device, got into your password manager, or somehow unlocked the safe that holds your half? Yes, that is why your device password, PIN, fingerprint, face unlock, and password manager security still matter. But a hacker cannot just steal your passkey from the website or trick you into typing it into a fake page like they can with a password. That is why passkeys are safer than passwords. The two matching pieces have to come together, like two lovebirds who were once separated and are finally reunited.
