The Official Mac OS X "Tiger" Thread

I'd like to see them upgrade the video card in the Mac mini for Tiger's Core Imaging :(

do some more homework.. it supports core image 100% - they just disabled the dashboard "ripple" effect for preformance issues.

I ordered a Mini on the 30th of March, its slated to get here tomorrow :-D

I called apple this morning about tiger, and they were nice enough to ship me one for "Customer Satisfaction" purposes.

I did, however tell them, that I would just return the mini unopened and re-order so I would get tiger, so they are sending me the retail box of Tiger instead of me having to go through that :-D

Whoot whoot, Goodtimes from Apple for my first Mac Experiance.

Regarding paid updates.

To add to what has already been said, 10.3.x updates are analogous to service packs whereas a 10.3 to 10.4 upgrade is a completely new release. The 10.x numbers refer to a new "release" version however the kernel version is updated by a full version number from 7.x (in panther) to 8.x for Tiger. They have also added a completely new API called Core Image/Video which is a completely new Core API somewhat analogous to the Avalon system that longhorn will have. It will also include a new search API called Spotlight which is somewhat analogous to WinFS.

It should be noted that you can upgrade from Mac OS 9 through 10.3 directly to Tiger. People who held off for some reason from upgrading from Jaguar to Panther should definately upgrade to Tiger.

If Windows 2000 Pro to XP is considered a fair paid upgrade (5.0 to 5.1), then Tiger is most definately worth the paid upgrade price.

Tiger only costs $69 with an education discount plus $5 tax, making it 74 dollars with free shipping.  I say everyone pretend they are a student and buy it via the education store :-) That is how I bought mine of course I am a real student.

That's how i'll get it, only $69.99 :)

You just have to have your Student ID #

[edit] i found this amusing....apple makes a better windows logo than microsoft.

I think that is very similar to Windows 3.1 logo...just different colors. (95/98/2k logo rotated CCW)

may be they're taking a shot at MS again :D

I turned Tiger inside-out looking for that icon. Can't find it anywhere.

God, I'm really p*ssed off about Tiger's interface!

...Why? It's just as inconsistent as Panther, only slightly more so. Besides, there is always Shapeshifter or ThemeChanger...TheneChanger being the first thing I install on my new OSes anyway...

I mean, I understand people being upset cause the interface is not as consistent as Mac OS 9...but really, we've all had since March 21, 2001 (that's what, four years) to get used to it being like that. If you don't like it, change it with one of the aforementioned apps. That is what they are for! :ninja:

Some windows are Aqua, some are 50% Plastic, 50% Aqua. Except for Mail there isn't an app 100% Aqua. The Mail Toolbar icon style is non-existent in the rest of the system. The Menubar style is once again different from Plastic. The copy/move etc. windows have an Aqua caption but are missing the stripes in the area below it, other than that there aren't any windows using Aqua without stripes.

It just looks weird...

I got a chance to get my hands on the gold release... and I have to admit people, its a bit disapointing... almost none of my software work with tiger! and for some reason all the icons have .app or .something the over all is faster though I'll give it that, but apart from that a little disapointing for so much hype

I see what you mean. Hopefully, however, Shapeshifter and the .guikit format will be updated to work with Tiger (quickly!) and we will be able to bring more consistency to the window appearances. I do know how you feel though, first thing I do is to change my theme to GoodGrey and dump all metal windows so that everything is consistent.

    • Google are hyprocrites for signing this. They have been pulling the same dirty tactics as Microsoft, only they do it on Android and ChromeOS.
    • In some countries the law has forced Microsoft to display a menu on a fresh install of Windows which asks which web browser you want and it will install that browser. This doesn't add any bloat to Windows. It simply an additional step when setting up a new PC.
    • Chrome is also a first party browser on Android and ChromeOS. And on those systems, Google is pulling the same dirty tactics as Microsoft does on Windows.
    • Unofficial script lets you install unreleased Windows 11 features without Microsoft Account by Sayan Sen Microsoft has been steadily evolving the Windows Insider Program over the years, introducing new channels and testing paths that allow enthusiasts to experience upcoming and yet-to-be-released Windows features (some interesting hidden ones too) before they reach the public. However, one long-standing requirement has remained largely unchanged as users are generally expected to enroll in the Program and with a Microsoft account. That's where a third-party tool called "OfflineInsiderEnroll" can help. OfflineInsiderEnroll is said to be a lightweight script that enables access to Windows Insider Program builds on systems that are not signed in with a Microsoft account. Essentially the tool configures the necessary Insider settings locally and hence allows users to select and switch between available preview channels while continuing to receive builds through the normal Windows Update channel. If you are wondering how it manages to do so, it is made possible by a Registry value known as TestFlags. When configured to"0x20", Windows stops communicating with Microsoft's online Insider enrollment services thus preventing locally configured Insider settings from being overwritten. This allows the script to apply its own channel configuration directly through the Registry as Windows Update does not verify whether a device has been officially enrolled in the Insider Program or not. Previously the utility has had already supported the traditional Insider branches including Dev, Beta, and Release Preview. However following Microsoft’s recent restructuring of its preview channels, the script has now been updated. The latest OfflineInsiderEnroll version, 2.6.6, adds support for the newly introduced Insider channel lineup. As such, users can now choose from several Experimental channels in addition to Beta and Release Preview options. The update also retains tools for refreshing the Insider cache, resetting Insider settings, and completely stopping Insider enrollment when needed. Keep in mind though that will need elevated privileges when running the script (run as Admin). You can get the latest version of OfflineInsiderEnroll from this page on its official GitHub repo.
