Adblock works wonders for me. It blocks ads from annoying sites, allows me to see ads in Neowin, and did I mention it allows ads in Neowin to be shown? ;)

In all seriousness, the ads Neowin implents are the best I have seen. They never get in the way and its hard to even tell they are there. Plus, being a subscriber I am and allowing ads to be shown allows Neobond to pay off 2 hours of bandwidth ;)

Indeed! AdBlock has a wonderful feature called whitelisting. (Y)

Yep (Y) They are so well placed you don't even notice them after a while.

I have never used adblock because I'm so used to ads that I simply DON'T care about them at all. As if they weren't there. Not talking about Neowin, but every other website on the internet (even the newspaper I read, which usually welcomes me with a huge massive flash ad that covers the whole page up). I have to admit that I have accidentally clicked on those ads that appear on those common words. But it takes less than a second for me to hit the "back" button.

I don't block ads simply because after so many years, it's like they're not there, no matter how annoying they are. But frankly, I find it TOTALLY legit to block ads in webpages. Fine, it's fair for you not to encourage people to use any adblocking app to block ads on neowin, but raising people's warning levels seems a bit TOO far.

I think some people from time to time encourage people to click on the ads to support webpages. When somebody complains they say "hey! come on, click on the ads, to support mantaining the servers". From the advertiser point of view, I don't think it's right to pay when people click on the ads, when visitors close the page as soon as they can. That's not the case of neowin, I don't see any "click on the ads".

That's just my opinion. One suggestion, add the "no adblock" thing to the rules. Or add a rule "visit the site & forum issues" from time to time, to check for changes.

@Julius Caro, Read the rule close. It's not about you can't block ads, it's about you can't brag about and/or tell others how to block ads here on Neowin. AFAIK, no one has been warned for blocking them.. only for bragging about it or telling others how to do it.. for this site specifically.

From now on, people who tell others how to block ads here will be warned and moved into a flood control group with a minute wait. This includes members who gloat about blocking ads.

Profile and Sig options will also be removed (seeing as we have to pay for all that extra bandwidth on sigs).

Dont disrespect me guys because I'm fed up with it. Mods will be told about this new policy forthwith.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that this revenue keeps us online.

hehe - the irony - on top of this thread is a goodle ad for "adblock"

back on topic... I would personally pay for an ad free version of neowin, IF the subscriptions thing was sorted out - i opted in for a mail subscription a while ago, but due to a dodgy shipping co. the payment was returned months later - but theres no way for me to change this OR start a fresh subscription and pay with paypal. I Have PM'd mods about it (and i PM'd Redmak with it!), but whenever i PM a mod (apart from Frank and Giga, theyre great :)), i never get a reply... Maybe the mods are too busy for us :)

As said, i dont block ads, and i do click them because they are a source of income for Neowin, but if there was the option to easily subscribe to an ad free version (or an ad free + mail version), then i'd happily fork out for it :)

Im gunna try to PM another mod to get my current subscription removed, maybe i'll pester Frank :D

Oh, and Neobond, maybe you should implement this into the rules, and/or send everyone a PM with it in, because not everyone reads this forum, and that way you can just say, "Look its there...", then people cant argue (not that they can argue with the owner anyway :D)

edit: its late-ish and my typing sucks

If the boss man says it, id listen....

The logic behind it is clear, if Neowin have a large community they are attractive to advertisers..but if neowin promote adblocking , then it becomes less attractive..no money to run the site and eventually.....

You do  i could have sworn most sigs are remotely linked does neowin actally offer to host sigs then  or do you just mean the extra bandwith to load the link to the sig?

I'm confused

I'm pretty sure he was talking about the profile settings in general; avatars and things of that nature. All sig images are linked externally.

EDIT: Technically they pay for the text in our sigs, but that's bits  I guess you can say with all the members it can add up to a certain ammount of gigs.

It's been over a year here and there's still a discussion about this? The point has been made here: Don't block ads.

(Y) Not just because he said it, also because he's right

I use Adblock in FireFox, but I whitelist Neowin. I even click on the ads because it drives money into the site.

What I don't like is mods closing topics about ad blockers, just for the sake of the topic being about ad blockers.

That is simply rediculous.

There are more to some ads than just advertisements. Tracking cookies are put in place based on what you view, and then preferences are set for future ads that you view. I don't want to see that crap all over the place.

Nor do I want to see 3 million stupid avatars. This is why I use an ad blocker. I filter the crap I don't want to see, not to use a filter set to block _all_ ads.

The mods need to stop being so damn obtuse and realize this isn't the only site on the internet with ads. Just because Neowin's aren't annoying, it doesn't mean other's aren't.

OK, one second here. I just want to get one question clear: are we ALLOWED to talk about adblockers but we cannot talk about HOW TO adblock something on Neowin?

Look at this thread. It looked fine for a month... until a certain somebody rampaged through it. It's against the rules of Neowin to discuss the names of adblockers? I thought it was more about the methods that is prohibited, especially those pertaining to Neowin's ads. And judging by that thread, it sure as damn hell looks like it was only names of software that were posted, not actual methods.

I mean hell, TWO staff members were in that thread. If anything, if it was a violation it would've been taken care of long ago. It's over a month old for crying out loud.

edit: Somnus noticed it already.

OK, so are you saying I should allow discussion on adblocking now? (so long as they don't mention Neowin, yea right I think it pertains to Neowin aswell) hey why don't I just start recommending other sites to go to instead of Neowin at the same time? I could even start paying people to post here. That would close us down overnight and then we won't have to worry about bad old Neobond not allowing discussion on adblocking tools.

I give a lot to the membership here by not throwing ad's in your face like other sites do. You know pop-ups, full page flash ad's and multiple ad's all over the place in annoying positions/flashing and all.

Come on guys it's pure common-sense.

    • Not such a great deal, Ultimate, which gives you full 5080 features is $181.99 CAD per month, that's $2183.88 per year, I can buy the 5080 for $1809.99 CAD, then it goes up to $279.99 per month after the first billing cycle. Typical cloud rental, costs more than buying the hardware.

    • Get used to this, with AI tooling now uncovering new vulns and getting them exploitable far faster than has ever been possible before software is going to need to be updated far more frequently. Back in the day it may take reseachers weeks or months to do what AI can now do in hours. Once its a threat is discovered it's weaponsized far more quickly, meaning you simply can't be waiting 2, 3, 4 weeks to deploy a patch, it needs to be patched immediately. Going to be interesting handling this in the enterprise space where traditionally patching has been steady, but very staged (and rightly so up until now), that is going to have to change.
    • You don't need to "close all browser sessions constantly" or wait for updates to install. The updates download in the background while you use the browser, without interrupting you, they install automatically the next time you launch the app. And they install very fast (depending on your storage speeds, of course), you have to wait at most 2-3 extra seconds, if any. Seems like you haven't used Edge in a loooooooong time...
