Aha,It seems that an general mistake will happen when you download something with new IE in longhorn,i can only use ftp programs to download software,so i suggest waitting for at least a BETA version of the new operating system.

just fix the download movie its not that hard

Yea, Rudy, Spill the beans! ... :D

SPILL EM!! :D

Well, since I have been using Longhorn for the past 2 months or so(don't ask where I got it ;)) I consider myself a Longhorn geek, so I figured I'd help all you Longhorn newbies out with any questions you may have. If your going to post, please stick to the topic and only post questions, or answers you may already know. I'll try my best to keep up and help out.

[Common Questions (I'll update this as I notice repetitive questions):]

Why does Internet Explorer 6.5 crash when I try to download?

This is because the download animation is missing and when IE calls for it, it doesn't know what to do, therefore crashing. This can be fixed by replacing the animation with a copy from an older version of IE via ResHack.

How can I display the Sidebar?

The Sidebar can be enabled by right-clicking on the Start button and clicking 'Taskbar Properties,' then putting a check in 'Enable Sidebar.'

Why does Longhorn feel like it's running sluggish?

This could be in part due to the fact that the Windows Future Storage is not fully implemented and not supported by the filesystem. You can remove this component without any other adverse affects by going to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Windows Components and unchecking the Windows Future Storage. Another thing possibly causing this is the fancy new explorer windows. You can go into the folder options windows and enable the classic explorer type and get a bit of a boost if you don't have a speedy PC.

Can I minimize windows to the Sidebar?

Unfortunately Microsoft wasn't quite sure how to implement this into the Sidebar yet, so in this build it is not possible.

if anyone wanted to run Longhorn for a more than a few days, then they must be crazy, I took it off the day after I got it, too many bugs I don't like, plus I need to be able to upload with smartftp, but it always crashed for some reason

Any chance of you whipping up that IE file somewhere?! Are the Aniimations in IE.exe?! ... i haven't looked, and its Far to late (or early in the morn now) Ugh!!

Neyo

Well to straighten this out a bit, the dll's containing the animation are; shdocvw.dll and shell32.dll, both in the X:\Windows\System32 folder.  The animation missing is number 170 under AVI's if you use ResHack

   i know what i have to to, but it doesn't have a f'ing system32.dll in my system32 folder! WTF!

You do mean it doesn't have a shell32.dll file in your system32 folder right? Or did you have a brain fart and were looking for system32.dll :pp

Ok, the animation doesn't seem to be missing if you're downloading from an FTP and you follow this procedure only

1. Open IE to the page where the download link exists (remember, the download link has to be from an FTP server)

2. Right-click on the download link and then click Copy Shortcut

3. Start-->Run-->"Pasted Shortcut Link"-->Enter

This will open up IE for a split second and then the save/open dialog appears. Pick whatever one and watch in awe, as the animation is magically NOT a missing wonder...

Also tried with an http:// link, but it doesn't work, just internal workings I guess..

oops.. I didn't mean to violate the boards rules..

Also, in the meantime of more playing, I've come across another way to download in Longhorn with IE 6.05 without it crashing. This way you can download from any source, not just FTP. (It's kinda a bummer, but whatever for now, it's alpha.. live with it). ;)

Click on the link to start the download, when it asks you to open/save, select one

1. Saving--> Select where you want to save your download and get it all ready. THEN.. move that save dialog kinda outta the way and move the mouse over the minimize button of the download dialog. Hit ENTER (this will save the file) then RIGHT AWAY, hit minimize on the download dialog so that it doesn't try and show the animation that's not there... this way it will not crash.

2. Opening--> works the same for the most part, except you have to hit tab to get the OPEN button selected, then move it outta the way and.. HIT ENTER, MINIMIZE FAST!

Hope this helps a bit.. :woot:

I'm trying to install LH in vmware 3.2 workstation. I had Windows XP installed fine, but when I try to install LH it gets to the point in the install after the region selection where you type in your name, and the keyboard and mouse stop working. This has happened several times, up until that point the mouse and keyboard function in the install (ie; to select NTFS, and what partition to install, and just moving the mouse aound during the graphical install). Has anyone had a similiar problem, or installed on vmware? if so what settings did you use to setup the virtual machine?

Thanks

Rekr

I have installed Nvidia drivers under Longhorn, version 41.03, and they installed fine. However, when I right click on the desktop, go to display settings --> advanced --> The Nvidia control panel is not showing up where it normally does. I've tried installing other version of drivers too, 3X.xx and 4X.xx. Does anyone know how to get this to work?

    • I've owned nothing but ATi/AMD GPUs since 2002, after my last nVidia GPU in 2001 (3dfx before that), IIRC, and in all of that time I recall getting this error maybe once, certainly no more than twice. Despite all the scuttlebutt as to how poor AMD drivers are supposed to be that has certainly not been my experience at all... Usually it has been a configuration problem of some kind. Then again, since we're dealing with OS versions that are EOL, it could easily be an OS version discrepancy. It's still weird to think that Win11 has been officially out for more than five years!
    • AI will never be the jobs panacea some companies fantasize about today. Oracle is likely using it as an excuse, which we will see a lot of companies doing, I'm certain. They love their "plausible" excuses for their downturns. A couple of weeks ago my wife asked me to call Krogers about some discrepancy in a online grocery order, and it will be the last time either of us does that. I'll just do emails with humans from now on... The AI experience was horrible--the obviously recorded voice started asking a bunch of questions about our orders six months prior(!) and saying, "Is this in reference to your order on January 6, for $****?" You say "No!" and immediately the next question is "Is this in reference to your order on January 29th, for $****?" again, I answered "No!"--and it was incredible--on and on it went like that for fully 20 minutes until we finally got to the present, and only then was I put through to a human with authentic intelligence... I wondered why on Earth the idiot AI didn't start with the most recent orders and work back from there, as it was something anyone with a functioning brain would have done. And why didn't the AI have enough sense to ask me what the problem was in the first place? It didn't take too much deduction to understand that the goal of this "AI" was to cause the person on the phone to hang up in disgust, with no resolution of the problem. That begs another question: why pay for a tool-free problem line if the goal is to avoid solving your customer's problems?... Fortunately, Krogers does have real humans capable of reading an email and understanding it, and if she sees another situation in the future that's route she or I will take. The online grocery delivery service from Krogers has been great, over all, but their AI truly sucks.
    • AI is the justification that company administrators use to lay people off; it is not the end all, be all touted in the media (many of whom can't tell a microchip from a potato chip). Greed is main driving factor behind its adoption; the other is remaining relevant in the face of competition from other entities.
    • Firefox 152.0.2 is out with fixes for performance, translation, and cloud storage services by Taras Buria A new bug-fixing update is now rolling out to Firefox users in the Release Channel. Less than a week ago, Mozilla fixed crashes on Intel Raptor Lake processors with version 152.0.1. Now, Mozilla has prepared yet another set of fixes that address problems with localization, playback issues of certain MP4 files, and performance issues on website that perform various encryption operations at once. Here is the full changelog: Firefox 152.0.2 is now available for download from Mozilla's FTP. Existing installations will get the update over the next several hours. The latest version will also be available soon on the official website, the Microsoft Store, and Neowin's Software page. You can find Firefox 152.0.2 release notes in the official documentation. In case you missed it, Mozilla released Firefox 152 earlier this month. The latest feature update brought reworked settings with a more streamlined user interface, JPEG XL support, new features for Private mode, a new way to mute a tab (just type "mute" in the address bar), and many more. You can find the complete changelog here. In other Firefox news, Mozilla recently published its roadmap, where the company detailed the upcoming Nova redesign and other features it plans to implement. Mozilla wants to make the new user interface easier to navigate and more modern, with a heavy focus on its privacy tools, such as its built-in VPN. If you are curious, you can already enable the new UI as described here.
