Neowin Fantasy Baseball Season 2007

Damn bangbang what the hell is with your pitching? An ERA of 7.5!

It apparently doesn't matter. I seem to be overstacked in pitching but that doesn't seem to be enough to put me ahead quite yet.

W 2

S 3

K 15

ERA 2.12

WHIP 1.18

I have one week's experience with Fantasy Baseball but... why aren't we tracking fielding errors?

Would that make for a more well-rounded game? Neowin Fantasy Basketball tracks the lowest turnovers, Neowin Hockey has +/- rating but Neowin Baseball doesn't seem to have much to cover the defensive side of the game (there's more to defense than pitching). I seems like a missing element.

Obviously we've already drafted for 2007 and maybe there is some reason why it doesn't work on a practical basis but I thought I would mention it for next year.

Good close week, bangbang023. It see-sawed back and forth quite a bit.

Incidentally, in the absence of errors being tracked, I'm actually hoping that Rickie Weeks makes a ton of fielding errors at 2B since that may make him OF eligible (according to rumours, Milwaukee might move him to the OF unless he improves defensively this season).

The DH position makes it a bit tougher to implement defensive stat tracking fairly and, honestly, I tried to pick some of the more "fun" stats. Focusing solely on offense and pitching puts the focus on the simpler aspects of the game. On top of that, if I add fielding percentage, people with good defensive catchers would be crying for stats that would help them out.

I'm willing to deal OF Dave Roberts (and possibly 2B Josh Barfield) for any good offers. Roberts had 49 steals last year and many teams could use help there. I simply don't find myself using him because of my over abundance of outfielders.

Okay, I'm a little over the top with closers especially now that Eric Gagne is back. Todd Jones has the most saves of anyone on my squad (with 5). He's currently ranked 33rd overall. I would listen to serious offers for a starter.

Should Octavio Dotel ever get healthy it will be ridiculous. I won't have enough reliever spots (the 2 RP positions plus to three P positions) to enable them all in one night which means that I'll have to guess as to who will get some innings and who won't. That's too much effort. :) At least with a starter I'll know that if he pitched yesterday that he won't be pitching today (or tomorrow or the next day).

Anyway, that's my problem. If anyone needs a quick injection of SVs then that is your ticket. I figure I'll still be competitive without my SV leader (because I have 9 other SVs from a collection of 4 other relievers plus, perhaps, Dotel).

I'm obviously not looking for a starter who is drop-worthy.

I just remade the bottom fifth of my team. It didn't help my RP situation however so the previous post still stands.

Edit: I only dropped three players. It seemed more painful that that at the time.

Update: Todd Jones jot got his sixth SV after pitching another inning with an ERA of 0.00 and a WHIP of 1.00. That should improve his ranking from 33rd overall.

Okay, it doesn't look like it but I have solved my RP/SP problem. Within a few days I hope to get SP eligibility on two of my relievers.

So, other than a general interest in improving in the OF and my annoyance that my backup shortstop seems to suck, I think I'm doing okay now.

I was attempting to move Todd Jones while I thought his value was high but now I'll just keep him and hope to win the SV category each and every week.

p.s. I already miss my StatTracker. :(

Other than being generally cheap, it seems wrong to pay for information on the Internet. Certainly, it's a bad precedent. I don't want Internet content providers charging for everything.

Yeah, I know, but this is how it's always been. That's why I'll check out ESPN next year and see if it has what we need. I'm not too fond of their on site ads, but if it saves Neowin members some money, then so be it.

If we have two leagues next year then we could split it. Yahoo isn't bad even without StatsTracker. You just have to wait until the next day (or stay up VERY late).

Edit: I don't think ESPN understands hockey. Their stats for SV% and PIM don't make any sense. How can you average negative penalty minutes?

My needs now are for a 2nd string SS.

I'd like to trade:

Brandon Phillips (Cin - 2B) O-Rank:136 Current Rank:27

or

Marcus Giles (SD - 2B) O-Rank:161 Current Rank:21

Both players are very hot (as you can see by their current rank). If someone wants Stephen Drew (Ari - SS, O-Rank: 138) back in a trade that can be arranged too.

    • Bluesky COO warns social media regulations could destroy competition from small startups by Paul Hill Fears that increasing government control of social media risks regulatory capture by the biggest social media firms were raised again recently. Bluesky’s chief operating officer said in an interview that social media bans for children and tighter regulations for social media firms risk creating a world where there are only a few social media platforms run by companies with the deepest pockets. Regulations on social media firms have been very lax since they appeared for mainstream users in the 2000’s. This gave Meta, Snapchat, and Google time to build up their user bases and get entrenched, with Meta being the most successful. Now that Meta has succeeded, it has been attempting regulatory capture. By pushing for more regulations of social media, Meta hopes to make it more difficult for rivals to challenge it. For its part, it doesn’t need to worry about the cost of regulation because it has a lot of money to spend, whereas startups do not. Speaking to CNBC, Rose Wang, Bluesky’s chief operating officer, said: “I support the protection and the safety of youth, the question that we have then is at what cost, because essentially what I’m scared of is in the long term, we’re headed to a world where there’s about three to five platforms, and extreme heavy regulation of those platforms, and basically the whole compliance teams of these platforms are 10 times the size of our entire team. So, basically, we’re living in a world where it’s almost impossible for smaller entrants to come in and build healthier spaces. These platforms have led to a place where the bottom line is the thing that drives what they do... so I understand why governments have to step in and regulate, because the platforms have done nothing right.” She said that while she is not against regulation, there needs to be more channels between the small to mid-sized players and regulators to help protect them. She says that big tech players, on the other hand, “who we know are circumventing regulation,” need to be regulated. Essentially, the Bluesky position is one of nuance, rather than absolutes. While Bluesky’s proposal may preserve competition in the social media space, it still doesn’t address the massive privacy implications these age verification measures introduce, such as handing over sensitive identity documents to access age-gated content.
